To renew your Texas driver’s license in person, bring documents from four categories: proof of identity, Social Security number verification, proof of citizenship or lawful presence, and two documents showing Texas residency. What you actually need to carry depends on what the Department of Public Safety already has on file from your last visit. If your name has changed or you want a REAL ID-compliant card, plan on extra paperwork. DPS publishes a renewal checklist as Form DL-32, and pulling it up before your appointment is the simplest way to avoid a second trip.1Texas.gov. What to Bring for Renewal DL-32
Proof of Identity
DPS accepts identity verification three ways, and you only need to satisfy one of them:2Department of Public Safety. Identification Requirements
- One primary document: a valid, unexpired U.S. passport (book or card), or a Texas driver’s license that has not been expired for more than two years.
- Two secondary documents: examples include an original or certified birth certificate from a U.S. state or territory, or a Consular Report of Birth Abroad (Form FS-240).
- One secondary document plus two supporting documents: supporting documents include your Social Security card, a W-2, or a 1099 form.
For most people renewing, the license itself is the primary document, as long as it hasn’t been expired for more than two years. If it has, you’ll need one of the other combinations.
Social Security Number Verification
DPS verifies your Social Security number electronically with the Social Security Administration. If your number is already in the system from a prior visit, you don’t need to bring anything for this step. If DPS cannot verify it electronically, bring your physical Social Security card.3Department of Public Safety. Social Security Number (SSN)
If you are not eligible for a Social Security number, you’ll complete a Social Security Number Affidavit (Form DL-13) at the office, certifying that you have never been issued or assigned one. Filing a false affidavit can lead to cancellation of your license and criminal charges.3Department of Public Safety. Social Security Number (SSN)
Proof of Citizenship or Lawful Presence
If you already established U.S. citizenship or lawful presence with DPS during a previous transaction, skip this category. If not, U.S. citizens can present a birth certificate (original or certified copy) or a valid U.S. passport. Non-citizens need documents proving lawful presence, such as a permanent resident card or employment authorization document.2Department of Public Safety. Identification Requirements
Two Documents Showing Texas Residency
You need two printed documents showing your name and Texas residential address. At least one must show you’ve lived in Texas for at least 30 days. Common options include:4Department of Public Safety. Texas Residency Requirement for Driver Licenses and ID Cards
- A current deed, mortgage statement, or lease agreement.
- A utility bill dated within 180 days of your application: electric, water, gas, internet, cable, streaming services, lawn care, or cell phone bills are accepted.
- A valid, unexpired Texas voter registration card. A printout from votetexas.gov verifying your residence may also be accepted.
If you’re surrendering a valid license from another state, DPS waives the 30-day requirement, but you still need the two residency documents.4Department of Public Safety. Texas Residency Requirement for Driver Licenses and ID Cards
Name Change Documents
If the name on your birth certificate does not match the name you want on your license, bring legal proof of the change. DPS accepts originals or certified copies only, not photocopies. Acceptable proof includes a marriage license, divorce decree, court-ordered name change, revised birth certificate, or a Department of State Health Services marriage verification letter.2Department of Public Safety. REAL ID and the Gold Star
Federal REAL ID enforcement took effect on May 7, 2025. Since then, you need a REAL ID-compliant license or another federally accepted form of ID such as a passport to board domestic commercial flights and to enter certain federal buildings.5Transportation Security Administration. Look at the top right corner of your current license. A gold star means your card is already REAL ID-compliant and no extra steps are needed. No star means you’ll get one at your next renewal, provided you bring the required documents. DPS also has an interactive REAL ID Document Check tool on its website that generates a personalized checklist.6Department of Public Safety. Federal Real ID Act
The documents for REAL ID largely overlap with the standard renewal requirements: a birth certificate or unexpired U.S. passport, your Social Security card, and proof of Texas residency, plus legal proof of any name change from what appears on your birth certificate.7Texas.gov. Texas REAL ID
Do You Have to Renew in Person at All?
Not every driver needs to walk into a DPS office. Texas allows online, telephone, and mail renewal for drivers who meet all of the following:8Department of Public Safety. Renew Your Texas DL, CDL, Motorcycle License or ID
- Your license expires within two years or has been expired less than two years.
- You are a U.S. citizen with a Social Security number already on file with DPS.
- You renewed in person last time.
- Your vision and overall health have not significantly changed since your last renewal.
- Your license is valid with no outstanding tickets or warrants.
Remote renewal doesn’t require physical documents. You’ll need the audit number on your current license, the last four digits of your Social Security number, and a credit or debit card. Drivers aged 79 and older and provisional license holders under 18 must renew in person regardless, and DPS also requires an in-person visit if your last renewal was remote, so the system alternates and keeps your photo, vision screening, and biometrics current. You also need to appear in person to change information on your license, such as your name, or if citizenship or lawful presence was never established on a prior visit.8Department of Public Safety. What Happens at Your Appointment
All in-person DPS driver license services require a scheduled appointment. Walk-ins are not accepted. Book yours at txdpsscheduler.com before heading to the office.9Department of Public Safety. Driver License Services – Appointments
At your appointment, you’ll hand your documents and a completed application to the license specialist. From there:8Department of Public Safety. Renew Your Texas DL, CDL, Motorcycle License or ID
- DPS screens your vision on site. The standard is 20/40 or better in each eye, with or without corrective lenses, for an unrestricted license. Corrected vision between 20/50 and 20/70 can still get you a license, but with restrictions such as daytime driving only or a speed cap. Worse than 20/70 in your best eye, even with correction, is a fail.10Legal Information Institute. 37 Texas Admin Code 15.51 – Vision Tests
- DPS takes a new photograph and collects your thumbprints.
- You pay the renewal fee: $33 for drivers aged 18 through 84, and $9 for drivers 85 and older.11Department of Public Safety. Driver License Fees
Once everything clears, you’ll leave with a temporary paper license valid for 60 days. Your permanent card arrives by mail, usually within two to three weeks.12Department of Public Safety. Section 3 – Issuing a Temporary Permit
