To renew your driver’s license in Missouri, you need proof of identity, proof of your Social Security number, and proof of your Missouri address, brought to a Department of Revenue (DOR) license office along with the renewal fee. If you want a REAL ID-compliant license with the gold star, bring two residency documents from separate sources instead of one. Some drivers between 21 and 49 can now skip the office entirely and renew online.
Documents to Bring

Proof of Identity and Lawful Status
One document showing your full legal name and date of birth. For U.S. citizens, an unexpired U.S. passport or passport card works, and so does a certified U.S. birth certificate. Non-citizens must present valid, unexpired immigration documents every time they apply, and the DOR verifies status through the federal SAVE system.2Legal Information Institute. 12 CSR 10-24-448 – Documents Required for Issuance of a Driver License, Nondriver License Non-citizens are not eligible for online renewal and must apply in person.
Proof of Your Social Security Number
One document verifying your SSN. The card itself is easiest, but a W-2, an SSA-1099, or a pay stub showing the full nine-digit number also works.1Missouri Department of Revenue. Missouri REAL ID Information
Proof of Missouri Residency
For a standard (non-REAL ID) license, one document is enough. For a REAL ID-compliant license, you need two documents from two separate sources.1Missouri Department of Revenue. Missouri REAL ID Information A utility bill, a bank statement, or the renewal postcard the DOR mails you all qualify. Two utility bills from different providers, or one utility bill paired with a bank statement, meet the two-source rule.
Proof of Any Name Change
If your current legal name doesn’t match the name on your identity document, bring certified proof of every name change linking the two. REAL ID or Standard?
Federal REAL ID enforcement began on May 7, 2025. Since that date, a domestic commercial flight or entry to certain federal buildings requires a REAL ID-compliant license, a U.S. passport, or another federally accepted ID.4Transportation Security Administration. If you already carry a passport, a standard license is fine; otherwise, most people upgrade at renewal to avoid carrying two documents.
Screenings at the License Office
Every in-person renewal includes a vision screening. Missouri requires a minimum visual acuity of 20/40 in at least one eye for an unrestricted license.5Department of Revenue. 12 CSR 10-24.090 Missouri Driver License or Permit Vision Test Guidelines Final If your vision falls below that, you may still qualify for a conditional license with restrictions, such as corrective lenses or daylight-only driving.
Office staff do the vision test at no charge. Fees and Payment
Renewal fees for a standard Class F license are set by the length of the license, which depends on your age:
- Six-year license, ages 21 to 69: $25.50
- Three-year license, ages 18 to 20 or 70 and older: $16.50
- Duplicate license: $16.50

When You Can Renew
You can renew as early as 184 days (about six months) before the expiration printed on your card.8Missouri Department of Revenue. Frequently Asked Questions – Driver License – General Your Class F license expires on your birthday, so count back six months from that date.
If your license has already expired, you have another 184-day window to renew without retesting. Miss that window and the process resets: you’ll take the written knowledge exam, a vision screening, the road sign test, and a behind-the-wheel driving test at a Missouri State Highway Patrol examination station before you can reapply.8Missouri Department of Revenue. One warning: the grace period keeps you from retesting, but it does not let you drive. Driving on an expired Missouri license is illegal and can be charged as a misdemeanor.
Three Ways to Renew
In Person
Walk into any DOR license office with your documents. Complete the vision and road sign screenings, sit for a new photo, and pay. Appointments aren’t required, but checking current wait times on the DOR website before you go can save you an hour, and filling out the application form in advance speeds up the counter.
Online
Missouri now offers remote renewal through mydmv2.mo.gov, but eligibility is narrow. You qualify only if all of the following are true:
- You are between 21 and 49.
- U.S. citizenship verification is already on file with the DOR.
- You can provide proof of a vision exam completed within the past 12 months.
- Your last renewal was processed in person; you can’t do two online renewals back-to-back.
- Your license is still valid or expired by no more than 184 days, and your driving record meets the DOR’s criteria.

By Mail (Military Only)
Active-duty military members and their dependents who are temporarily stationed outside Missouri can renew by mail using Form 4317, along with proof of active-duty or dependent status such as a photocopy of a military ID or orders.10Missouri Department of Revenue. After You Renew
You’ll leave with a temporary paper document, and your old card will be punched with a “VOID” hole and handed back. The permanent card is produced at a central secure facility and mailed to your residential address, usually within 10 to 15 business days.11Missouri Department of Revenue.
