To renew your New Mexico driver’s license, you need proof of identity, a Social Security number, two documents showing your current New Mexico address, and a passing vision screening. The fee is $18 for a four-year license or $34 for eight years.1Motor Vehicle Division NM. How Much Does a Driver License Cost Which identity documents you bring depends on whether you hold a Real ID or a Standard license, and most renewals can be done online unless you’re switching between the two types.
Real ID or Standard: Decide First
New Mexico issues two license types, and the choice affects which documents you’ll need. A Real ID carries a gold star and is required to board domestic flights or enter certain federal buildings.2MVD NEW MEXICO. REAL ID Federal enforcement began May 7, 2025, so a Standard license alone will not clear airport security after that date.3TSA. TSA Publishes Final Rule on REAL ID Enforcement Beginning May 7 2025 A U.S. passport works as an alternative at TSA checkpoints, so if you fly with one anyway, a Standard license may cover everything you need on the ground.
Renewing the same type you already have is straightforward. Switching from Standard to Real ID (or the reverse) counts as a new application, has to be done in person, and requires the full document package for the type you’re moving to.
Documents for a Real ID Renewal
Real ID renewals are governed by 18.19.5.12 NMAC, which implements the federal Real ID Act.4Motor Vehicle Division NM. Chapter 6 Acceptable Documents for Real ID Drivers Licenses and IDs and CDLs You’ll need one document from each of three categories:
- One proof of identity and age: an original or certified U.S. birth certificate filed with a state vital statistics office, or a valid U.S. passport or passport card.
- One proof of Social Security number: your Social Security card, a W-2, an SSA-1099, a non-SSA 1099, or a pay stub. The document must show your full nine-digit number.
- Two proofs of New Mexico residency: each must show your name and current physical address in New Mexico. Utility bills for water, gas, electric, internet, or landline phone (cell phone bills don’t count), plus bank, credit card, or mortgage statements, all qualify. Each must be dated within 60 days of your visit.
Check that your name is spelled the same way on every document. A mismatch between your birth certificate and your Social Security card is one of the most common reasons a renewal gets held up at the counter.
Documents for a Standard License Renewal
The Standard license accepts a wider range of identity documents than Real ID. In place of a U.S. birth certificate or passport, you can use a certified letter of enrollment from a federally recognized tribe, a military ID, a foreign birth certificate with a notarized English translation, or a consular ID from the Mexican consulate in Albuquerque or El Paso.5Motor Vehicle Division NM. List of Acceptable Documents for Standard Driver License Two proofs of New Mexico residency are still required, and the 60-day rule for bills and statements still applies.
The Standard license does not require proof of a Social Security number, which makes it accessible to residents who don’t have one. The MVD’s full acceptable-documents list is available on its website and at any field office if you’re unsure whether what you have will work.
Vision Screening
Every renewal includes a vision test. New Mexico’s standard is 20/40 or better in at least one eye, with or without corrective lenses.6Motor Vehicle Division NM. Chapter 9 Medicals – Section C Vision Report If you renew in person, MVD staff test your vision on site. If you don’t pass, they’ll give you a Vision Report (form MVD-10125) to take to an optometrist or ophthalmologist, who fills it out and returns it to you to complete the renewal.
If you wear glasses or contacts, bring them. A corrective-lens restriction will be added to your license, and this is routine.
Renewing Online
If you already hold a Real ID or Standard license and are renewing the same type, the MVD’s online portal handles it.7Motor Vehicle Division NM. Renew a Driving Credential You enter your current license number and the last four digits of your Social Security number, confirm your mailing address, choose a four- or eight-year term, and pay by credit card. Online renewal is not available if you’re switching license types.
Renewing in Person
In-person renewals happen at state MVD field offices or certified third-party providers such as MVD Express. Third-party locations charge a convenience fee on top of the state fee. Bring your full document package even if you’ve renewed before, and expect the clerk to run the vision screening during the same visit.
Once payment is accepted, you’ll leave with a temporary paper permit that acts as your license for up to 45 days while the permanent card is printed and mailed.8Motor Vehicle Division NM. Drivers Licenses and IDs If your old card was hole-punched, carry it together with the temporary permit; neither is valid alone. Contact MVD if the permanent card hasn’t arrived before the temporary expires.
Fees and Term Length
A four-year license costs $18. An eight-year license costs $34.1Motor Vehicle Division NM. How Much Does a Driver License Cost Both amounts cover the base license fee and a driver safety surcharge set under NMSA 1978, § 66-5-44.9Justia. New Mexico Statutes Section 66-5-44 – Licenses and Permits If you moved to New Mexico from another state, add a one-time $15 DWI records check fee, making the total $33 for four years or $49 for eight.
You can renew up to 90 days before your license expires.10Justia. New Mexico Statutes Section 66-5-21 – Expiration of License
If You’ve Moved
New Mexico law requires you to notify MVD of an address change within 10 days.11Motor Vehicle Division NM. Change Your Address If your renewal is close, handling both at once makes sense; just make sure your two residency documents show the new address.
Drivers 79 and Older
Starting at age 79, your license must be renewed every year rather than every four or eight, and the annual renewal is free.12Justia. New Mexico Statutes Section 66-5-19 – Restricted Licenses The vision screening applies each time, so these renewals have to be done in person. No multi-year license extends past your 79th birthday; even an eight-year license expires 30 days after that date.10Justia. New Mexico Statutes Section 66-5-21 – Expiration of License
Drivers Under 21
A license issued before your 21st birthday expires 30 days after you turn 21, no matter which term length was selected.10Justia. New Mexico Statutes Section 66-5-21 – Expiration of License At that point you renew through the normal process and pick a standard four- or eight-year term. The document and fee requirements are the same as any other renewal.
Active-Duty Military Stationed Out of State
If you’re on active duty in the U.S. armed forces and stationed outside New Mexico, your license remains valid past its printed expiration date as long as it hasn’t been suspended, canceled, or revoked. You don’t need to renew from out of state. Once you’re reassigned back to New Mexico or discharged, you have 31 days to renew.13Motor Vehicle Division NM. Military Keeping your military ID with your expired license during the extension period is a good idea, since officers in other states may not know about the provision.
If Your License Has Already Expired
Driving on an expired license is a misdemeanor traffic offense in New Mexico, and there is no formal grace period in state law. Your license is either valid or it isn’t. If your license has been expired for five or more years, MVD may require you to retake the written knowledge test before renewing, which turns a routine visit into a testing appointment. If you catch the lapse, stop driving and renew as soon as you can, online if you’re eligible or at a field office if you need the vision screening or updated documents.
