To renew your vehicle registration in West Virginia, you need a personal property tax receipt from your county sheriff showing current taxes are paid, proof of liability insurance that meets state minimums, your renewal notice or plate and VIN, and the registration fee, which starts at $51.50 a year for a standard passenger vehicle. With those in hand, you can renew online, at your county sheriff’s office, at a self-service kiosk, or by mail.
The Documents to Have Ready
Three pieces of paperwork do most of the work. Miss one and the renewal stalls.
Your Personal Property Tax Receipt
West Virginia will not renew your registration until you prove your vehicle property taxes are paid. The receipt comes from the county sheriff’s office and must show full payment of personal property taxes for the current calendar year or the one immediately before it.1West Virginia Legislature. West Virginia Code 17A-3-3a It also needs to show that any emergency ambulance fees owed to the county are paid; if your county doesn’t impose those fees, the receipt is issued without that line.
If you believe your vehicle wasn’t subject to property tax for the relevant year, you’ll need to give the DMV documentation supporting that.
Proof of Liability Insurance
Every renewal application must include a statement of insurance proving the vehicle has active liability coverage.2West Virginia Legislature. West Virginia Code 17A-3-3 The state minimums are $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident for bodily injury, plus $25,000 for property damage.3WV Insurance Commissioner. Auto Mandatory Limits Have the insurance company name, the policy number, and the five-digit National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) code for your carrier. One wrong digit in the policy or NAIC code will delay processing.
Your Renewal Notice (or VIN and Plate Number)
The DMV mails a renewal reminder postcard about 30 days before your registration expires.4WV.gov. Registrations – WV Division of Motor Vehicles It carries the plate number, VIN, and other details that speed things up online or at the counter. If the postcard never arrived or you misplaced it, your current registration card has the same information. Without either, bring the 17-character VIN and your plate number so the system can pull your record.
A Current Address on File
If you’ve moved since your last renewal, West Virginia law requires you to notify the DMV of your new address within 20 days.5West Virginia Legislature. West Virginia Code 17B-2-13 Updating it before you renew makes sure the new registration card and decal are mailed to the right place. You can do this through the DMV’s online portal or on the form the DMV prescribes.
What You’ll Pay
Your fee depends on vehicle class. The most common annual amounts for standard graphic plates are:6WV Department of Transportation. WV Motor Vehicle Registration Fees Brochure
- Class A, passenger cars and trucks up to 10,000 lbs: $51.50
- Class B, trucks over 10,000 lbs: $66.50
- Class G, motorcycles: $16.00
- Class X, farm trucks between 8,001 and 16,000 lbs: $31.50
- Class V, antique vehicles: $14.00
Specialty plates cost more. Renewing at a county sheriff’s office adds a $1 service fee.7West Virginia Legislature. West Virginia Code 17A-3-17
Class A passenger vehicles and Class G motorcycles can be renewed for two years at once. The annual fee is simply doubled and the registration is valid for 24 consecutive months,8West Virginia Legislature. West Virginia Code 17A-3-16 so $103.00 for a standard car or $32.00 for a motorcycle, with one fewer trip to make.
Safety Inspection Is Separate
Your registration renewal does not require you to show an inspection sticker, and the two run on separate cycles. The DMV won’t ask for it. But West Virginia requires a safety inspection every 24 months at a station licensed by the State Police, and driving without a valid sticker is illegal.9WV Department of Transportation. New Law Takes Effect for WV Motor Vehicle Inspections The sticker fee is capped at $19. If yours is close to expiring, handle it around the same time as your registration so you don’t end up with fresh plates on a vehicle you can’t legally drive. There’s no emissions test in West Virginia.
