What Do I Need to Renew My Tags in Ohio? Insurance, E-Check, and Fees

To renew your tags in Ohio you need proof of auto insurance, your license plate number and VIN, a valid Ohio driver’s license or state ID, payment for the registration fee, and — if you live in one of seven counties — a passing E-Check emissions certificate. If the BMV mailed you a renewal notice, bring it; it has the information the clerk or the online form needs to pull up your record fast.

Proof of Insurance

The central requirement is proof of financial responsibility, which for most drivers means a current auto insurance policy that meets Ohio’s minimums: $25,000 for injury or death of one person, $50,000 for injury or death of two or more people, and $25,000 for property damage.¹ You can show coverage with your insurance card, a declarations page, or the policy itself. At a deputy registrar office you’ll sign a financial responsibility statement confirming the coverage is in force.²

Vehicle and Identification Information

Have your current license plate number and vehicle identification number ready. For in-person renewals, a valid Ohio driver’s license or state ID is required.² For online renewal through OPLATES, you’ll need your Ohio driver’s license or ID number, your plate number, and the last four digits of your Social Security number.³ The renewal notice the BMV mails you carries most of this on one page, so keep it if it comes.

E-Check Certificate in Seven Counties

If your vehicle is registered in Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Lorain, Medina, Portage, or Summit County, you need a passing E-Check emissions test before the BMV will process your renewal. Testing runs on a two-year cycle: even model years are tested in even calendar years, odd model years in odd. Gasoline and diesel vehicles between 6 and 25 model years old and weighing 10,000 pounds or less are subject to it.⁴

Several categories are permanently exempt: new vehicles in their first four model years, vehicles more than 25 years old, motorcycles, recreational vehicles, motor homes, electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids, and commercial vehicles over 10,000 pounds.⁵ If your vehicle does need testing, start early. Repairs take time, and the certificate has to be in hand before the BMV will renew you.

What You’ll Pay

The base registration fee for a standard passenger car is $36.⁶ Two things almost always get added on top.

First is the service fee. A one-year renewal at a deputy registrar office adds an $8 agency fee. Renewing online through OPLATES instead adds a $1.75 processing fee.⁶

Second is permissive local tax. Counties, municipalities, and townships can each levy $5, and up to six levies can stack in a single taxing district, so local tax runs from $0 to $30 per vehicle per year depending on where you live.⁷ All in, a one-year renewal at a deputy registrar for a standard car ranges from about $44 to $74; online, about $38 to $68.

Fuel type matters. Hybrids pay an extra $100 a year, plug-in hybrids $150, and fully electric vehicles $200, on top of everything else. Personalized plates add $50 a year; organizational and collegiate plates run from nothing to $50 depending on the plate; military and accessible plates carry no annual surcharge.⁶

Payment methods depend on how you renew. At a deputy registrar, you can pay with credit card, cash, check, or money order. By mail, use a check or money order payable to the Ohio Treasurer of State; do not send cash.⁸

Choosing How to Renew

Ohio lets you renew up to 90 days before your registration expires, through any of three channels.²

Online

OPLATES.com is the quickest option.³ You’ll need your Ohio driver’s license or ID number, plate number, and the last four digits of your Social Security number. After payment you can download a temporary registration to carry in the vehicle until the new stickers arrive in the mail.

By Mail

Complete BMV Form 4625 and send it with proof of insurance, your E-Check certificate if applicable, and a check or money order payable to the Ohio Treasurer of State.⁸ Mail everything to:

Ohioans temporarily out of state, along with active-duty military and their dependents stationed elsewhere, can maintain their Ohio registration this way. Military members may need to include a copy of their orders or military ID for verification.²

In Person

Bring your current registration card or renewal notice, proof of insurance, a valid Ohio driver’s license or state ID, and your E-Check certificate if your county requires one.² You’ll leave the deputy registrar office the same day with your new registration card and stickers.

If you’d rather not repeat this every year, Ohio allows multi-year registration for passenger cars, non-commercial trucks and trailers, motor homes, motorcycles, and mopeds — up to five years, or up to seven for commercial trailers. You pay the annual fee times the number of years, with no discount and no refunds if you sell the vehicle or move before it expires.⁹

If Your Tags Have Already Expired

You can still renew after expiration, but once you’re more than 30 days past, the BMV adds a $10 late fee.⁶ Driving on expired registration is also a minor misdemeanor under Ohio law,¹⁰ which carries a maximum fine of $150 plus court costs.¹¹ Renewing inside the 90-day pre-expiration window is the easiest way to avoid both.
