To renew your vehicle tabs in Washington state, you need current liability insurance on the vehicle, no unpaid parking tickets or tolling debts tied to you or the car, your license plate number along with either your name or the last four characters of your VIN, and payment for the renewal fees, which start at about $47 for a standard passenger vehicle. The Department of Licensing (DOL) handles renewals online, by mail, or in person.
What to Have Ready Before You Start
Liability Insurance
Every registered vehicle in Washington must carry liability coverage with minimum limits of $25,000 for one person’s injury or death, $50,000 for all injuries or deaths in a single accident, and $10,000 for property damage.1Washington State Department of Licensing. Mandatory Insurance You will not be asked to upload or attach proof during the renewal itself, but the coverage has to be in force.
No Unpaid Tickets or Tolls
The DOL will block your renewal if you have outstanding parking tickets or tolling fees connected to the vehicle or owner.2Washington State Department of Licensing. Renew or Replace Vehicle Tabs If you’re not sure whether something is sitting on your record, call the DOL at 360-902-3900 before you try to pay. Finding a hold at the counter or mid-checkout is the most common way a renewal stalls.
Plate Number, VIN, and ID
You need your license plate number and either your name or the last four characters of your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). Both appear in your License Express account and on your current registration paperwork. If you’re going in person, bring your renewal notice or registration and a form of personal identification. If a courtesy renewal notice arrived by email, postcard, or letter, it lists your fee amount and vehicle details and makes the process faster.3Washington State Department of Licensing. One Thing You Don’t Need

What It Will Cost
Base Fees for a Passenger Vehicle
A standard passenger vehicle starts with three charges: a $30 license tab fee, an $11 service fee, and a $6 filing fee, for a total of $47 before any other taxes or fees.5Washington State Department of Licensing. Calculate Vehicle Tab Fees Trucks and other vehicles registered by weight follow a different schedule that starts at $53 for vehicles up to 4,000 pounds and rises from there.6Washington State Legislature. RCW 46.17.355 – License Fees by Weight
Electric and Hybrid Vehicles
Battery electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids that can travel at least 30 miles on battery power alone pay two electric vehicle fees totaling $150 ($100 plus $50) and a $75 transportation electrification fee, adding $225 to the base cost.5Washington State Department of Licensing. Calculate Vehicle Tab Fees Hybrids and alternative fuel vehicles that don’t meet the 30-mile battery threshold pay the $75 transportation electrification fee only.
Regional Transit Authority Tax
If you live inside the Sound Transit District, which covers parts of King, Pierce, and Snohomish counties, your renewal includes a Regional Transit Authority (RTA) motor vehicle excise tax at a voter-approved rate of 1.1%.7Washington State Department of Licensing. Regional Transit Authority (RTA) Tax The tax is based on your vehicle’s depreciated value, so on a newer car it can add several hundred dollars, while on an older vehicle it may be modest. Not every address in those three counties falls inside the district; the DOL’s RTA tax page links to Sound Transit’s lookup tool so you can check.
Card Surcharges
Payment method changes the total. Online, credit or debit card payments (Visa, MasterCard, American Express) carry a 3% card payment fee, and paying by checking account information costs nothing extra.5Washington State Department of Licensing. Calculate Vehicle Tab Fees At a licensing office, debit cards add a flat $2.25 fee. Credit cards add $2.25 if the total is $75 or less, or 3% if it’s over $75. Cash and checks have no surcharge in person.
Optional Add-Ons at Checkout
A $5 State Parks donation is added to your total automatically. You can change or remove it. You’ll also see an option to donate to the Organ and Tissue Awareness Account and to buy a Discover Pass for $45.2Washington State Department of Licensing. Exemption for Disabled Veterans
Veterans with a 100% service-connected disability rating expected to last more than one year qualify for a license fee exemption on one vehicle per year.8Washington State Department of Licensing. Disabled American Veteran Specialty Design Plate The exemption applies to passenger vehicles, motorcycles, motor homes, and trucks under 12,000 pounds, and the vehicle cannot be registered to a business or used commercially. If you choose the standard Disabled American Veteran plate in the next available series number, plates and tabs don’t need to be renewed at all. A custom background version still requires annual renewal.
How to Submit the Renewal
Online
Log into License Express on the DOL website, or renew without an account using your plate number and vehicle information.2Washington State Department of Licensing. Renew or Replace Vehicle Tabs Confirm your vehicle details, pay, and your new tabs and registration documents arrive in the mail. Update your address in License Express first if you’ve moved.
By Mail
If a renewal notice came in the mail, you can send it back with a check or money order made payable to “Department of Licensing” to the address on the notice. You need the physical renewal notice for this option. Allow enough time in both directions for your new tabs to arrive before the current ones expire.
In Person
Bring your renewal notice or registration and identification to any vehicle licensing office. Cash, check, and card are all accepted, and you’ll walk out with your new tabs the same day, which matters if the current ones are close to expiring or already have.
If Your Tabs Have Already Expired
Washington does not charge a separate late fee at renewal. You pay the same registration fees whether you’re on time or three months past due.
The exposure is on the road. Driving with expired registration is a traffic infraction under state law.9Washington State Legislature. RCW 46.16A.030 – Registration and Display of Plates Required, Penalties, Expired Registration, Impoundment The fine depends on how long the registration has lapsed, though it is not a criminal offense. Failing to register a vehicle at all before driving it carries a $529 fine that cannot be reduced.
If you need to drive the vehicle to a licensing office or elsewhere while the tabs are expired, a trip permit costs $36 and is valid for three consecutive days from the first day of use.10Washington State Department of Licensing. Trip Permits for Unlicensed Vehicles Vehicles with expired tabs count as “unlicensed” for this purpose.
Keep Your Address Current
Update your address through License Express before you renew if you’ve moved.11Washington State Department of Licensing. Moving to Washington – Vehicle Registration and Plates Your address decides which local taxes apply, including the RTA tax, so a move into or out of the Sound Transit District changes your bill. An outdated address is also the main reason renewal notices and new tabs go astray and people miss their window entirely.
