What Do I Need to Transfer My Driver’s License to Missouri?

To transfer a driver’s license to Missouri, take your current out-of-state license and documents proving your identity, lawful status, Social Security number, and Missouri address to a Department of Revenue (DOR) license office. Staff will invalidate your old license, run you through a road sign recognition test and a vision screening, and issue a Missouri Class F license. If your out-of-state license is valid (or expired no more than 184 days), the written knowledge test and the behind-the-wheel driving test are waived.1Missouri Department of Revenue. When You Have to Do It

Missouri doesn’t publish a specific grace period for a standard license. The DOR’s rule is that once you establish residency, you need to apply for a Missouri license.2Missouri Department of Revenue. Residency is established through actions showing you intend to stay: moving into a home you bought or rented, starting a job, enrolling children in school, or registering to vote. Any single one is enough.

Driving on your old license after you’ve settled in Missouri can be charged as driving without a valid license. A first offense is a Class D misdemeanor, a second is a Class A misdemeanor, and a third or later offense is a Class E felony.4Missouri Revisor of Statutes. Missouri Revised Statutes 302.020

Decide Between REAL ID and Standard First

Missouri offers a REAL ID-compliant license and a standard (non-REAL ID) version. The choice changes the paperwork: a standard license needs one proof-of-residency document, while a REAL ID needs two from different sources.5Missouri Department of Revenue. Since May 7, 2025, standard state licenses are no longer accepted at TSA checkpoints for domestic flights.6Transportation Security Administration. What to Bring to the License Office

You need at least one qualifying document from each of four categories. All must be originals or certified copies, unexpired.1Missouri Department of Revenue. Driver Licensing Checklist

Proof of Identity

Your current out-of-state license works if it’s valid or expired no more than 184 days. A certified U.S. birth certificate from a vital records agency or a valid U.S. passport also qualifies. Hospital-issued birth certificates, birth registration cards, and birth transcripts are not accepted.7Missouri Department of Revenue. Proof of Lawful Status

A U.S. birth certificate, U.S. passport, or Permanent Resident Card covers this. Non-citizens with temporary authorization bring the immigration document showing current status.1Missouri Department of Revenue. Driver Licensing Checklist

Proof of Social Security Number

A Social Security card, W-2, or pay stub showing your full number. If you bring the card, it must be signed (for applicants 18 and older) and cannot be laminated.7Missouri Department of Revenue. Documents for Driver License, Nondriver ID, and Instruction Permit

Proof of Missouri Residential Address

A recent document with your name and Missouri street address: utility bill, bank statement, lease, property tax receipt, or voter registration card. A P.O. Box doesn’t count.7Missouri Department of Revenue. Surrendering Your Old License

You hand over your out-of-state license at application, and Missouri invalidates it. If yours is lost, stolen, or destroyed, a current clearance letter from the issuing state can substitute. The letter has to include your license number, classification, endorsements, and restrictions so Missouri can decide whether testing is waived.1Missouri Department of Revenue. Tests You’ll Take

Every transfer applicant takes a road sign recognition test and a vision screening. There’s no waiver on either.2Missouri Department of Revenue. FAQs – General

The sign test asks you to identify standard highway signs by shape, color, and meaning. It’s narrower than the full written knowledge exam. Missouri publishes a Highway Signs Recognition Study Sheet (Form 4869) that covers what you’ll see.

The vision screening checks acuity and horizontal peripheral vision. Bring corrective lenses if you use them. Failing isn’t permanent; you may be asked to get a vision report from an eye care professional and return.

The written knowledge test and the behind-the-wheel skills test are waived if you surrender a valid out-of-state license, or one that expired no more than 184 days ago.1Missouri Department of Revenue. Fees and What Happens at the Counter

Basic license transactions are generally walk-in. Staff review your documents, run the sign and vision tests, take your photo, and capture your signature. You pay before the license is processed.

A Class F license comes in three-year and six-year terms. The DOR’s published fee chart lists $10 for three years and $20 for six.9Missouri Department of Revenue. You leave with a temporary license the same day. The permanent card arrives by mail at your Missouri address.

Commercial License Holders

CDL rules are different. You have 30 days from establishing residency, and you need two proof-of-residency documents from different sources, the same requirement as a REAL ID.7Missouri Department of Revenue.
