What Do Red Light Cameras Look Like in California?

Red light cameras in California look like a large boxy camera inside a white or gray metal housing, bolted to a heavy galvanized steel pole about 10 to 20 feet behind the limit line, usually on the right side of the approach. One or two flat flash panels sit on the same pole. A beige or green utility cabinet stands on the sidewalk nearby, thin rectangular loop cuts run through the pavement just before the stop line, and a “Photo Enforced” sign is posted within 200 feet of the intersection. Together, those pieces are what red light cameras look like in California, and no single one of them appears by accident.

The Camera Housing and Pole

The camera sits inside a rectangular or cylindrical metal enclosure built to survive heat, rain, and vibration. Most housings are painted white, light gray, or silver so they blend in with other utility hardware. The front face has a clear glass or polycarbonate window, and the lens is aimed diagonally across the intersection rather than straight down the road. If the housing is roughly the size of a shoebox or larger, sitting on its own dedicated steel pole, you are almost certainly looking at enforcement equipment rather than a traffic monitoring device.

The poles are heavy galvanized steel, often with one or more horizontal arms that reach out over the curb. A busy intersection may have poles on more than one corner to cover multiple lanes or turn movements. When a single pole carries a large camera housing plus separate boxy attachments at different heights, that is the signature look of an active installation.

The Flash Panels

Mounted separately from the camera housing, usually on the same pole or a nearby arm, you will see one or two flat square panels or smaller boxes. These are the flash units. When the camera triggers, they produce a bright white strobe that is unmistakable if you have ever driven under one at night. Some newer systems use an infrared pulse that is nearly invisible, but the panel housing the emitter is still physically present and visible during the day.

California’s system has to photograph the driver, not just the plate, so the flash is aimed slightly downward and toward the driver’s-side windshield. A sudden intense flash from the side of the road as you cross an intersection, one that clearly is not lightning, means a red light camera just fired.

The “Photo Enforced” Sign

The most reliable way to identify a red light camera intersection is the warning sign. California law requires a sign posted within 200 feet of the intersection, visible from every direction where the camera is issuing citations. You will usually find them on the traffic signal poles themselves or on standalone posts along the approach.

Before any city or county begins issuing real citations at a new location, it has to run a 30-day warning-only period and make a public announcement.1California Legislative Information. California Vehicle Code 21455.5 If the required signage is missing or obscured, that gap can matter if you challenge a ticket later.

Ground-Level Clues Before You Look Up

Two pieces of hardware at ground level give the system away even before you spot the pole. The first is the control cabinet: a large beige or green metal utility box sitting on the sidewalk or curb near the intersection. It houses the processors, storage, and communication gear that link the camera to law enforcement. These cabinets look similar to other city utility boxes, but their placement right next to a camera pole is the tell.

The second clue is in the pavement itself. Inductive loop sensors are cut into the asphalt as thin rectangular outlines, usually filled with dark sealant, sitting just before the limit line. When your vehicle’s metal mass passes over a loop after the light has turned red, the sensor triggers the camera. Some intersections use two sets of loops a few feet apart so the system can measure your speed and confirm you were still moving into the intersection rather than stopped on the line. Rectangular cuts in the road as you roll up to a signal are a reason to look for a camera pole.

Where the Pole Sits at the Intersection

Most poles are set roughly 10 to 20 feet behind the limit line, on the right side of the approach. The camera is angled diagonally toward the middle of the intersection rather than straight down the lane. That angle lets a single frame capture the signal status, your position relative to the limit line, the front plate, and the driver’s face.

The setback also gives the system room to record a sequence: one image as you enter the intersection and another as you continue through. Two photos are what the system relies on to show that you actually ran the light rather than stopping just past the line. At high-volume intersections you may see poles on multiple corners, each covering different lanes or turn movements, and a pole with two or three camera housings and matching flash panels on several arms is a heavy enforcement setup.

What Isn’t a Red Light Camera

Plenty of equipment mounted near a signal has nothing to do with issuing tickets. Knowing the differences saves needless worry.

Emergency Vehicle Preemption Sensors

Small white or dark cylinders and discs mounted on top of the signal mast arm detect approaching fire trucks and ambulances so the light can turn green for them. They are much smaller than a red light camera housing, have no flash panels, and have no enforcement function.

Traffic Monitoring Cameras

Many intersections carry small dome or bullet cameras attached directly to the signal mast arm. They feed live video to traffic management centers so engineers can watch congestion and adjust signal timing. They are much smaller than enforcement cameras, have no separate flash panels, and do not sit alongside a control cabinet or pavement loops. They do not issue tickets.

Speed Cameras Under AB 645

California’s AB 645 pilot program authorized speed safety cameras in Los Angeles, San Jose, Oakland, Glendale, Long Beach, and San Francisco, running through January 1, 2032. Putting the Pieces Together

Any one of these features on its own can be ambiguous. A steel pole could just be a light standard. A utility cabinet could belong to the phone company. A camera on a mast arm could be a monitoring dome. What separates a red light camera intersection from everything else is the combination: a large camera housing on a dedicated pole set back from the limit line, separate flash panels, loop cuts in the pavement, a nearby control cabinet, and a “Photo Enforced” sign on the approach. When you see all of that as you roll up to a signal, you are at an enforcement intersection, and the equipment is watching the light and the limit line at the same time.
