To get a REAL ID in Illinois, you need to bring documents from four categories: one proof of identity and date of birth, one proof of your Social Security number, one document with your written signature, and two proofs of Illinois residency. If your current legal name is different from the name on your birth certificate, you also need certified paperwork tracing every name change. Every document must be an original or a certified copy. Photocopies and phone screens are not accepted.
Proof of Identity and Date of Birth
One document has to establish both your full legal name and your date of birth. A valid U.S. passport works. So does a certified birth certificate filed with a state vital statistics office. If you were born outside the United States, a Consular Report of Birth Abroad or a Permanent Resident Card is accepted instead.1Illinois General Assembly. Illinois Administrative Code Title 92 Section 1030 Appendix D – Acceptable Identification Documents
If you don’t have a birth certificate, request a certified copy from the vital records office in your state of birth before you do anything else. Fees vary by state, and mail requests can take several weeks.
Proof of Your Social Security Number
You need one document that shows all nine digits of your Social Security number. Any of these qualifies:
- Social Security card
- W-2 showing your full SSN
- Your most recent pay stub or electronic deposit receipt with your full SSN
- SSA-1099 or Non-SSA-1099 form
The name on this document has to match the name on your identity document. The Secretary of State’s office verifies your number electronically against Social Security Administration records, so any mismatch will flag your application.2Illinois General Assembly. Illinois Administrative Code 92-1030.8 – Procedure for Obtaining a Real ID Compliant Driver’s License or Identification Card Fix the mismatch before you go, not at the counter.
If you hold a visa-based license and are legally ineligible for a Social Security number, you don’t bring an SSN document. You sign a declaration of ineligibility when you apply.3Illinois Secretary of State. Document Requirements to Obtain a Driver’s License/State ID Card
Proof of Written Signature
One document has to carry your physical signature. Common choices are a current Illinois driver’s license (or one expired less than a year), a major-brand credit or debit card (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, or Diner’s Club), or a canceled check dated within 90 days of your application.4Illinois Secretary of State. REAL ID Document Checklist
A U.S. passport, Social Security card, U.S. military ID, current out-of-state driver’s license, or a driver’s license or ID card issued by a U.S. government agency also works.1Illinois General Assembly. Illinois Administrative Code Title 92 Section 1030 Appendix D – Acceptable Identification Documents Several of these overlap with the identity category, so one document can often satisfy two requirements at once.
Two Proofs of Illinois Residency
This is the only category where you need two documents, and both must show your name and your physical residential address. A P.O. box is not accepted. Any two of the following work:
- Utility bill (electric, water, gas, refuse, phone, or cable) dated within 90 days
- Bank statement dated within 90 days
- Credit card statement dated within 90 days
- Mortgage, deed, or rental/lease agreement
- Voter registration card
- Homeowner’s or renter’s insurance policy
If you recently moved, update the address on your bank accounts, utilities, and other billing before you apply.4Illinois Secretary of State. REAL ID Document Checklist Showing up with two documents that list different addresses is one of the most common reasons applicants are turned away.
Name Change Documents
If your current legal name differs from the name on your birth certificate, you need certified paperwork for every name change in between. One marriage certificate covers one change. If you’ve been married more than once, divorced, or changed your name by court order, you need a certified document for each step so the Secretary of State can connect your birth name to your current name.1Illinois General Assembly. Illinois Administrative Code Title 92 Section 1030 Appendix D – Acceptable Identification Documents
There is a real shortcut here. If your U.S. passport is in your current legal name, you don’t need any name change documents. The passport itself bridges the gap. If you’ve been through multiple name changes, getting a passport first is often easier than pulling three or four certified records from different courthouses.
Certified marriage certificates usually come from the county clerk where the marriage was recorded. Court-ordered name changes come from the courthouse where the order was entered.
Originals or Certified Copies Only
Every document in every category has to be an original or a certified copy. Photocopies are not accepted, and neither are images on a phone screen. You can print a digital document, like an electronic bank statement, and bring the printout.4Illinois Secretary of State. REAL ID Document Checklist
You May Not Need a REAL ID in the First Place
A REAL ID is one way to get through airport security. It isn’t the only way. TSA also accepts a valid U.S. passport or passport card, a U.S. military ID (including dependent IDs), DHS trusted traveler cards (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, or FAST), a Permanent Resident Card, and valid foreign passports.5Transportation Security Administration. Acceptable Identification at the TSA Checkpoint Travelers under 18 are not required to show ID at TSA checkpoints, so children don’t need a REAL ID to fly. If you already carry one of the alternatives, you can skip the document hunt entirely.
At the Facility
Once you have your documents together, book an appointment at an Illinois Secretary of State Driver Services facility to skip the walk-in line.6Illinois Secretary of State. Appointments Staff verify each original at a document check before you move to the counter for the photo and the $30 fee, the same as a standard license renewal.
Your existing license is hole-punched, and you leave with a temporary paper document valid for 90 days. The permanent card arrives by mail in about 15 business days, and you can track it through the Secretary of State’s online portal.7Illinois Secretary of State.
