To get a REAL ID in Iowa, bring four things to an Iowa Department of Transportation service center: one document proving your identity and lawful status, one document showing your Social Security number, two pieces of mail proving your Iowa address, and any legal paperwork connecting your birth name to the name you use now. The documents needed for a REAL ID in Iowa are the same whether you’re upgrading at renewal or replacing a current card, and adding the gold star costs nothing beyond the standard license fee.1Department of Transportation. One Document for Identity and Lawful Status
A single document handles this category for most people because it proves who you are, when you were born, and that you’re lawfully in the country all at once. For U.S. citizens, any one of these works:
- A valid, unexpired U.S. passport
- A certified birth certificate from a state vital records office with a raised seal or registrar stamp (a hospital souvenir certificate or a photocopy will not do)
- A Consular Report of Birth Abroad on Form FS-240, DS-1350, or FS-545 from the U.S. Department of State
- A Certificate of Naturalization or Citizenship on Form N-550, N-570, N-560, or N-561
You only need one of these.2eCFR. 6 CFR 37.11 – Application and Documents the Applicant Must Provide
If You Are Not a U.S. Citizen
Non-citizens can satisfy the identity and lawful status requirement with an unexpired Permanent Resident Card (Form I-551), an unexpired Employment Authorization Document (Form I-766), an unexpired foreign passport together with an approved I-94, or refugee or asylee documentation such as an I-94 stamped “Refugee,” “Parolee,” or “Asylee,” or a Refugee Travel Document (I-571). If your authorized stay is temporary, your REAL ID will expire when that status ends.3Department of Transportation. Immigrant and Refugee Process
Proof of Your Social Security Number
The Iowa DOT verifies your Social Security number electronically with the Social Security Administration during your visit. The straightforward way to satisfy this step is to bring one document showing your full nine-digit number and your current name. Any of the following works:
- Social Security card
- W-2 form
- Social Security Administration 1099
- Non-SSA 1099
- Pay stub showing your name and Social Security number
If you can’t find any of these, you’re not necessarily stuck. Iowa allows you to state your Social Security number verbally at the counter, and if it verifies electronically with the SSA on the spot, no paper document is required.4Department of Transportation. Real ID FAQs Bringing a document is still the safer choice. Electronic verification can fail if there’s a name mismatch in SSA records, and if that happens you’ll be sent home for paperwork.5Crawford County, Iowa. Driver’s License and ID Cards Checklist
Two Proofs of Iowa Residency
You need two separate printed documents, each showing your current name and your current Iowa residential address. The address has to be a physical location where you live; a P.O. box does not count.1Department of Transportation. Get a REAL ID Utility bills, bank or credit card statements, pay stubs, and other postmarked mail are the common examples. A residential lease, mortgage statement, voter registration card, or insurance document showing your Iowa address can also work. The Iowa DOT describes these broadly as “pieces of mail” and does not publish a strict list.6Iowa Treasurers. REAL ID Handout
Both documents must be on paper. Pulling up a bank statement on your phone at the counter will not satisfy the requirement, so if you bank online, print your statements before you go.
Applicants Under 18
Minors applying for a REAL ID don’t need to bring residency documents at all if a parent, guardian, or custodian completes and signs a consent form for the license or ID. The consent form takes the place of the two residency documents. Emancipated minors who are married skip the consent form but must bring their marriage certificate as proof of emancipation.4Department of Transportation. Real ID FAQs
Safe at Home Participants
If you’re enrolled in Iowa’s Safe at Home address confidentiality program through the Secretary of State’s office, you prove residency with your Safe at Home participant card instead of two documents. At the counter, give only the street address and apartment number from the card as your residential address; the full address including the P.O. box goes in the mailing address field so your license reaches you safely.7Department of Transportation. Legal Name-Change Documents, if Your Name Has Changed
If the name you use today is different from the name on your birth certificate or other identity document, bring every legal document that connects one name to the next. The Iowa DOT calls this your “chain” of name-change documentation, and gaps in the chain are one of the most common reasons applications get delayed.
Say you were born Jane Smith, married and became Jane Johnson, then divorced and became Jane Miller. You would need both the marriage certificate (Smith to Johnson) and the divorce decree showing the name change (Johnson to Miller). Each link matters. A marriage certificate covers each marriage, and a divorce decree covers a name reversion or change ordered in the divorce. Adoption decrees and court-ordered name-change petitions also qualify as links.8Iowa Department of Transportation. Proof of Name Change – Current Legal Name Differs from Name on Identity Document
If your name changed informally at some point and no legal document supports the change, you’ll likely need to obtain a court-ordered name change before you can get a REAL ID. The DOT has no way to bridge undocumented name gaps.8Iowa Department of Transportation. Proof of Name Change – Current Legal Name Differs from Name on Identity Document
What Happens at the Service Center
REAL ID applications must be done in person. Online renewal does not include the REAL ID upgrade. You can schedule an appointment on the Iowa DOT website to avoid long waits, though walk-ins are generally accepted.1Department of Transportation. Get a REAL ID A DOT agent reviews your documents, verifies your Social Security number electronically, and takes your photo.
Adding the gold star itself costs nothing. You pay only the standard fee for whatever transaction you’re doing: $4 per year of validity for a renewal, or $10 for a duplicate or replacement.9Department of Transportation. Driver’s License Fees Your old card is surrendered or voided, and you leave with a temporary paper permit. The permanent REAL ID arrives by mail, and the Iowa DOT says to allow up to 30 days for delivery.1Department of Transportation. Get a REAL ID
One timing note if your license has lapsed: if your current Iowa license has been expired for more than one year, you’ll need to pass both the written knowledge test and the driving test before your REAL ID can be issued. Renewing within that one-year window avoids retesting.10Department of Transportation. Renew Driver’s License
