What Documents Do I Need for a REAL ID in NC?

To get a REAL ID in NC, you need four things at your NCDMV visit: one document proving your identity and lawful status, one document showing your full Social Security number, two documents proving your current North Carolina address, and, if your legal name differs from the name on your birth certificate or passport, certified documents tracing every name change. Your first REAL ID has to be issued in person, so bring originals. Federal enforcement began May 7, 2025, meaning a REAL ID-compliant license (or another federally accepted ID like a passport) is now required to board a domestic flight or enter secure federal buildings and military bases.1Transportation Security Administration. Proof of Identity and Lawful Status

Bring one original document that establishes your identity, date of birth, and legal presence in the United States. For most people born in the U.S., that means a certified birth certificate from the state vital records office where you were born. A valid, unexpired U.S. passport works, and so does a Consular Report of Birth Abroad.3North Carolina Department of Transportation. REAL ID Requirement List

Photocopies don’t count unless they’re certified by the issuing agency, and the document has to be free of alterations or damage. If you can’t find your birth certificate, order a certified copy from the vital records office in your birth state and give yourself several weeks for it to arrive.3North Carolina Department of Transportation. Non-citizens use a different set of documents: a valid Permanent Resident Card (Form I-551), an unexpired Employment Authorization Document, a Certificate of Naturalization or Citizenship, or an unexpired foreign passport with a valid U.S. visa and I-94 Arrival/Departure Record.3North Carolina Department of Transportation. Proof of Your Full Social Security Number

One document, showing all nine digits. The NCDMV accepts any of the following:

  • Your original Social Security card, not laminated and not a metal or plastic replica
  • A W-2 form showing your full SSN
  • A 1099 form showing your full SSN
  • A pay stub showing your full SSN

Photocopies of the Social Security card are rejected, and so are laminated cards and metal or plastic novelty replicas.4North Carolina Department of Transportation. If you’ve lost your card, request a replacement through the Social Security Administration well before your appointment.3North Carolina Department of Transportation. REAL ID Requirement List

Two Proofs of Your North Carolina Address

You need two separate documents showing your current physical address in North Carolina. The accepted list is broad:5North Carolina Department of Transportation. NC REAL ID Requirements

  • Documents issued by North Carolina, an NC county or city, or the federal government
  • NC vehicle registration card, insurance policy, or vehicle title
  • Voter precinct card
  • Military orders or documents
  • A utility or cable bill
  • A lease or rental contract, mortgage statement, property tax statement, or income tax statement
  • A preprinted bank or financial institution statement
  • School records
  • A letter from a homeless shelter

The name on both residency documents has to match the legal name shown on your identity documents. Bring recent bills or statements rather than older ones. If you live with someone else and nothing is in your name at that address, the shelter letter option or a government-issued document mailed to you there may fit; the NCDMV’s online Document Wizard will walk your specific situation through the requirements before you go.2North Carolina Department of Transportation. Name-Change Documents If Your Name Has Changed

If your current legal name is different from the name on your birth certificate or passport, you need certified documents showing every step of the change. Accepted documents are certified marriage licenses or certificates, certified divorce decrees, and court orders from a Register of Deeds or court.3North Carolina Department of Transportation. The chain has to be complete. If you were born Jane Smith, married and became Jane Johnson, then divorced and became Jane Williams, you need both the marriage certificate and the divorce decree that ordered the second change. A missing link will get your application denied. A valid U.S. passport in your current legal name can sometimes stand in for the paper trail, so if you have one, bring it along.

At the DMV

Bring originals. A license examiner scans your documents and takes a new photo. When you’re approved, you’ll get a temporary paper permit to use right away, and the permanent card, marked with a gold star in the upper corner, arrives by mail. Before you go, run the NCDMV’s online Document Wizard to generate a checklist tailored to your situation and book an appointment through the NCDMV appointment system.2North Carolina Department of Transportation. If You Can’t Gather Everything Before You Need to Fly

A REAL ID-compliant license is not the only ID that gets you through a TSA checkpoint. TSA also accepts a valid U.S. passport or passport card, Department of Defense military IDs (including dependent IDs), a permanent resident card, DHS trusted traveler cards such as Global Entry or NEXUS, and several other federally issued credentials. If you already have a passport, you can keep flying with your standard NC license and passport while you assemble the paperwork for a REAL ID. Children under 18 do not need to show ID for domestic flights when traveling with an adult.7Transportation Security Administration. Acceptable Identification at the TSA Checkpoint
