What Documents Do I Need to Renew My License in NJ?

To renew a driver’s license in New Jersey, you need identity documents totaling at least six points under the state’s verification system (with at least one “primary” document in the mix), a separate proof of your current New Jersey address dated within the last 60 days, and — if you’re renewing in person — a completed Form BA-208 and the $24 fee for a standard license. The documents needed to renew a license in NJ are the same whether you renew online or at a Licensing Center, but online renewal also requires the authorization code printed on the renewal notice the MVC mails to your address on file.¹

The Six-Point ID Requirement

New Jersey assigns a point value to every identity document it accepts, and your combination must add up to at least six. The system is set out in N.J.A.C. 13:21-8.2, and the MVC publishes the full breakdown in its six-point brochure.²³ Points alone are not enough. You also need at least one primary document, and no more than two one-point documents can count toward your total.

Primary Documents (4 Points)

For U.S. citizens, primary documents include:

A civil birth certificate issued by a state, D.C., or U.S. territory. Hospital and religious certificates don’t count.
A U.S. passport, current or expired less than three years.
A current U.S. passport card.
A certificate of naturalization or citizenship (Forms N-550, N-570, N-560, N-561, or N-645).
Your current NJ digital driver license or non-driver ID in the state’s app.
A valid active-duty U.S. military photo ID card.
U.S. adoption papers.

Secondary Documents

Secondary documents fill out the remaining points. Three-point options include a civil marriage or civil union certificate, a divorce decree, a court order for a legal name change, and a valid NJ firearm purchaser card. Two-point options include a U.S. school photo ID with a matching transcript, a government employee photo ID, and military discharge papers (DD-214). One-point options include a Social Security card, a bank statement, an ATM card with your preprinted name, and an out-of-state photo driver’s license. Only two one-point documents can be applied to the total.³

Combinations That Actually Work

The most common six-point stack is a U.S. passport (4), a Social Security card (1), and a bank statement (1). If you don’t have a passport, a civil birth certificate (4), a Social Security card (1), and a debit card with your printed name (1) also gets you there. The mistake to avoid: showing up with only primary documents and no secondary, or the reverse. You need at least one primary regardless of how many secondaries you carry.

Proof of New Jersey Address

Beyond the six points, you must show a separate proof of your current New Jersey address, such as a utility bill or bank statement dated within the last 60 days. This is a distinct requirement. Even if you used a bank statement as a one-point ID document, you still need a separate piece of mail confirming your address.

If Your Name Has Changed

If your legal name changed since your last license, bring proof of the change with your other documents. Acceptable proof is a certified marriage or civil union certificate, a divorce decree linking your old and new names, or a court order for a legal name change. Everything must be an original or a certified copy with the proper municipal or state seal.⁴ These documents also carry point values on the secondary list, so the same paper can pull double duty.

Documents for Non-Citizens

Non-citizens satisfy the primary-document requirement through immigration paperwork. A foreign passport paired with USCIS verification and a valid I-94 arrival/departure record earns four points. So does a current alien registration card (Form I-551 with an expiration date) verified by USCIS, a refugee travel document (Form I-571), or a U.S. re-entry permit (Form I-327).³

A current employment authorization card (Form I-766) counts for three points but must be presented with a valid Social Security card. An older-style alien registration card without an expiration date, verified by USCIS, earns two points. The six-point minimum and the primary-document rule still apply.

Extra Documents If You Want a REAL ID

Since May 7, 2025, TSA no longer accepts a standard New Jersey license at airport checkpoints. A REAL ID-compliant license carries a gold star in the upper right corner; the standard version is printed with “NOT FOR REAL ID PURPOSES.” Both are valid for driving.⁵

Upgrading at renewal costs $35 instead of $24, and it changes what you bring. REAL ID applicants must present two separate proofs of residential address, not one.⁵ If you already carry a valid passport for travel, the standard license is cheaper and needs less paperwork. If your driver’s license is your only photo ID, the REAL ID upgrade is worth doing during renewal rather than making a second trip.

What to Bring for an In-Person Renewal

For in-person renewal at a Licensing Center, bring your six points of ID, your proof of address (two proofs for REAL ID), a completed Form BA-208 (the application for permits, licenses, and non-driver IDs, available on the MVC website or at the agency), and payment for the $24 fee. Payment can be made by credit card, debit card, cash, check, or money order payable to NJMVC.⁶¹ Schedule an appointment first; walk-in renewals are not guaranteed.

The Vision Screening

Every renewal, in person or online, is tied to a vision screening. New Jersey requires 20/50 visual acuity in each eye, with or without corrective lenses. If you have no vision in one eye, the other eye must meet 20/50 on its own.⁷ Bring your glasses or contacts if you use them. Failing the screening at the MVC means you’ll need to add one more document to your file: a vision report from an eye doctor before the renewal can move forward. Drivers with certain medical conditions affecting safe driving may also need a physician’s certification confirming their status is stable.

Who Can’t Use the Online Option

Online renewal requires the authorization code from your mailed renewal notice, so if you never received one or lost it, plan on an in-person visit. You also must appear in person if your license has been suspended, if you hold a commercial driver’s license (CDL), if your license carries a temporary visa restriction, or if it expired beyond any approved extension period. Drivers who never upgraded from a probationary license to a basic license likewise renew in person.⁸ One more boundary worth knowing: if your license has been expired for more than three years, the MVC no longer treats you as a renewal at all. You start over as a first-time driver, with the written knowledge test and road skills exam.¹

You can begin renewal up to three months before your expiration date, so gather the documents early. Being one point short at the counter means walking out and coming back another day.⁹
