To renew a Virginia driver’s license, you need documents in four categories: one proof of identity, one proof of legal presence in the United States (in some situations), two proofs of Virginia residency, and one proof of your Social Security number. If you’re wondering what documents you need to renew your license in VA, the exact list depends on whether you’re eligible to renew online or by mail, or whether you have to go in person — and whether you want a REAL ID with the gold star. A standard eight-year renewal costs $32.1Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. Renew Driver’s License
If you qualify for online or mail renewal, you won’t present physical documents at all. The DMV verifies your information electronically and uses your existing photo. Bring documents only if you’re renewing in person.
Proof of Identity and Legal Presence
You need one document that shows your full legal name and date of birth. A U.S. passport, U.S. passport card, birth certificate, or Certificate of Naturalization each satisfies both identity and legal presence with a single document.2Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. Legal Presence in Virginia
If you’re not a U.S. citizen, acceptable combinations include an unexpired foreign passport with a U.S. visa and I-94, an unexpired Permanent Resident Card, or an Employment Authorization Document (I-766). The DMV does not accept the I-766 for a REAL ID credential, though it may be accepted for a standard license.2Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. Legal Presence in Virginia
Legal presence proof is not always required at renewal. You only need to present it if your license expired before you renewed, if your license was suspended or revoked, or if you’re applying for a REAL ID for the first time. A straightforward renewal of a still-valid standard license may not require it.2Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. Legal Presence in Virginia
Bring originals. The DMV will not accept photocopies, and it will not accept abbreviations or nicknames — every document must show your full legal name.3Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. Apply for a Driver’s License
Two Virginia Residency Documents
You need two separate documents showing your Virginia address. At least one has to come from the DMV’s primary list. The second can come from either the primary or the secondary list.
Primary residency documents include:
- A deed, mortgage, or monthly mortgage statement
- A residential rental or lease agreement
- A utility bill for gas, electric, water, sewer, cable, or landline phone, dated within the last two months (cell phone bills don’t count)
- A U.S. Postal Service change of address confirmation, or postmarked mail with a forwarding address label
- A payroll check stub issued within the last two months
- A monthly bank or credit card statement dated within the last two months
The two-month freshness rule on utility bills, bank statements, and pay stubs is the single most common reason people get sent home. Check the dates before you leave the house.4The Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. DMV 141 – Obtaining a Driver’s License or Photo ID Card
Proof of Your Social Security Number
Acceptable SSN documents include your Social Security card, a W-2, or a payroll check stub showing all nine digits.4The Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. DMV 141 – Obtaining a Driver’s License or Photo ID Card
There’s a shortcut. If you know your SSN and the DMV can verify it electronically against Social Security Administration records, you don’t need to bring a physical document. That electronic check works for both standard licenses and REAL IDs.4The Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. DMV 141 – Obtaining a Driver’s License or Photo ID Card
REAL ID Renewals
Since May 7, 2025, you need a REAL ID compliant license, a passport, or another federally approved ID to board domestic flights and enter certain federal buildings.5Transportation Security Administration. REAL ID If your current Virginia license doesn’t have a gold star in the upper-right corner, it isn’t REAL ID compliant.
Upgrading to a REAL ID during renewal requires the same four document categories, but you must apply in person. There is no online or mail path for a first-time REAL ID. The upgrade adds $10 to the renewal fee, so a REAL ID renewal totals $42.6Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. REAL ID
If your name has changed since your identity document was issued, you need documents linking every step in the chain. A marriage certificate ties a maiden name to a married name; a divorce decree or court order ties a married name to a new one. The DMV will not accept a marriage license or certificate signed only by the officiant.7Virginia DMV. REAL ID
Do You Have to Renew In Person?
Virginia alternates renewals. If your last renewal was in person, you’re generally eligible to renew online or by mail this time. If your last renewal was online or by mail, this time you must go in person.1Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. Renew Driver’s License
You must renew in person if any of the following applies:
- Your last renewal was online or by mail
- Your license has been expired for more than 12 months
- Your license is suspended or revoked
- You need to change or correct your name
- You’re applying for a REAL ID for the first time
- You are age 75 or older
- You owe money to the DMV from a prior transaction
- Your SSN doesn’t match Social Security Administration records
The full ineligibility list is longer. If you received a renewal notice in the mail, it will tell you which options are open to you.8Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. Ineligibility to Renew Online or by Mail
Online renewal is the quickest option when you qualify. You submit the renewal through the DMV’s online portal, pay the fee, and receive your new license by mail within about 15 days. Mail renewal works the same way with a pre-printed application the DMV sends you. Both paths reuse your existing photo, so you don’t sit for a new one.1Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. If You’re Changing Your Name at Renewal
A name change requires an in-person visit. You’ll need one of the following, in addition to your other renewal documents:
- A marriage certificate or civil union document filed with a government agency or court
- A divorce decree that specifies a return to your maiden or former name
- A certified court order granting a legal name change
- An adoption decree, if your legal name differs from your birth certificate
If you’ve had more than one name change, bring documents covering each step from your birth name to your current legal name.9Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. Start Name Change
Sex designation is a separate matter. Virginia offers male (M), female (F), and non-binary (X) options, and no healthcare provider certification is required to make the change during a renewal.10Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. Change Address, Name or Sex Designation
If Your License Has Already Expired
Driving on an expired Virginia license is a Class 2 misdemeanor, punishable by up to six months in jail, a fine of up to $1,000, or both. A second offense is a Class 1 misdemeanor, with up to 12 months in jail and a $2,500 fine, and a court can suspend your driving privilege for up to 90 days on top of that.11Virginia Code Commission. Virginia Code 46.2-300 – Driving Without License Prohibited; Penalties12Virginia Code Commission. Virginia Code 18.2-11 – Punishment for Conviction of Misdemeanor If you’re cited for driving on an expired license, the court may dismiss the charge if you show proof of renewal before your court date.
Once your license has been expired for more than one year, the renewal process changes. You’ll need to retake the vision screening, the two-part knowledge exam, and the road skills test — the same testing sequence as a first-time applicant. You’ll also need to provide proof of legal presence, because your expired credential no longer satisfies that requirement.1Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. A Quick Checklist Before You Go
For a standard in-person renewal, confirm you have:
- One identity document (U.S. passport, birth certificate, Certificate of Naturalization, or another accepted form)
- One legal presence document if it applies to your situation (often the same document as your identity proof)
- Two Virginia residency documents, at least one from the primary list, dated within the last two months where a freshness rule applies
- One SSN document, unless the DMV can verify your number electronically
- Payment: $32 for a standard eight-year license, or $42 if you’re getting a REAL ID
- Any name-change documents connecting every prior legal name to your current one, if applicable

One boundary worth flagging: if you’re 75 or older, you can’t renew online or by mail, and your renewed license will be valid for five years instead of eight.8Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles.
