What Documents Do You Need for a Real ID in Arkansas?

To get a REAL ID in Arkansas, you need to bring four categories of documents in person to any Revenue Office: one proof of legal presence, one proof of identity, one proof of your Social Security number, and two proofs of Arkansas residency.¹ If your name has changed since any of those documents were issued, you also need paperwork showing the change. Missing one item means going home and starting over, so the list below covers exactly what qualifies in each category.

Since May 7, 2025, a REAL ID-compliant license or another federally accepted ID has been required to board a domestic flight or enter most federal facilities.² If you already carry a U.S. passport, passport card, military ID, permanent resident card, DHS trusted traveler card, or federally recognized tribal ID, TSA will still accept those at the checkpoint, so the pressure to convert is lower.³

Proof of Legal Presence

You need one original document showing you are lawfully in the United States. U.S. citizens can bring any of the following:⁴

Current or unexpired U.S. passport or passport card
U.S. birth certificate, original or certified copy from the vital records office (not a hospital souvenir certificate)
Consular Report of Birth Abroad, Form FS-240 or FS-545
Certificate of Naturalization, Form N-550 or N-570
Certificate of Citizenship, Form N-560 or N-561

Non-U.S. citizens need one of these instead:⁴

Foreign passport with a valid U.S. visa and I-94 record
Permanent Resident Card (I-551)
Employment Authorization Card (I-766)
Another DHS-issued immigration document

Proof of Identity

Identity is a separate requirement from legal presence, and this is where people get caught out. Even if you hand over a birth certificate for legal presence, you still need a second document proving you are who you say you are. One of the following will do:⁴

Current Arkansas driver’s license or ID card
Military ID or military dependent ID
School ID card
U.S. birth certificate (this one document can satisfy both legal presence and identity)
Federal or state government-issued ID
Arkansas vehicle title or registration
Concealed handgun license
Armed forces discharge papers, such as a DD214
Pilot’s license
Marriage certificate or license
Tax return dated within one year
Bureau of Indian Affairs card or Indian Treaty card

For a minor with none of these, a parent or guardian can appear in person and sign an affidavit confirming the child’s identity. The parent has to prove their own identity at the same time.⁴

Proof of Social Security Number

You need one document showing your full Social Security number. Arkansas DFA lists two: your Social Security card and DD214 discharge papers.⁴ The card is the common route. If yours is lost, you can request a free replacement through the Social Security Administration, which usually arrives in about two weeks.

The name on your Social Security document has to match the name on your legal presence document. If it doesn’t, you need name change documentation as well.

Two Proofs of Arkansas Residency

Residency is the only category that requires two documents. Both must show your name and your physical residential address. A P.O. box or business address will not be accepted, and most items must be dated within the past six months unless noted otherwise.⁴

College or university tuition invoice, official mail, or school transcript
A letter on formal letterhead from a bank manager, doctor, accountant, attorney, or employer confirming they have known you for at least three years and verifying your residential address
Homeless shelter agreement

A useful shortcut: if your identity document already shows your current residential address, it counts as one of the two residency documents.⁴ A current Arkansas driver’s license with the right address, for instance, can satisfy identity and one residency slot, leaving only one more residency document to find.

If the Residency Documents Aren’t in Your Name

A spouse can use a residency document in their partner’s name by also bringing a marriage certificate. A child can use a parent’s residency document with a birth certificate attached.⁴

Name Change Documents

If the name on your legal presence document doesn’t match the name on your Social Security card or other documents, you have to bring paperwork that connects them. Arkansas accepts:⁴

Marriage certificate or certificates
Divorce decree or decrees
Court order for a legal name change
Adoption documents
U.S. birth certificate, if it reflects your current legal name
Social Security card, if it has already been updated to your current name

If your name has changed more than once, bring documentation for every change in the chain. A birth certificate under a maiden name, followed by marriage, followed by a post-divorce name change, would require both the marriage certificate and the divorce decree so the Revenue Office can trace the full sequence.

Fees and Appointments

A full eight-year REAL ID costs $40. If your current Arkansas license hasn’t expired and you only want to convert it, the fee is $10 and your existing expiration date carries over.⁵ Many people assume they have to wait for renewal, so the $10 conversion is worth knowing about.

You can schedule an appointment through the Arkansas DFA website, which is recommended. Walk-ins are accepted, but wait times at busier offices can be long.¹ At the counter you submit all your documents and have a new photo taken. The office typically issues a temporary paper document, and the permanent card is mailed to the residential address you just verified.
