To get a REAL ID in Illinois, you need to bring documents from four categories to a Secretary of State Driver Services facility: one that proves your identity, date of birth, and lawful status; one showing your full Social Security number; two that prove Illinois residency; and one that verifies your signature. If you already hold a valid Illinois driver’s license and previously provided your Social Security card, the SSN document is waived.1Illinois Secretary of State. Proof of Identity, Date of Birth, and Lawful Status
One document has to establish your full legal name, your date of birth, and either U.S. citizenship or lawful immigration status. For U.S. citizens, the usual choices are:
- A certified U.S. birth certificate from a state vital records office. Hospital keepsake certificates don’t qualify.
- A valid U.S. passport or passport card, or one that expired less than two years ago.
- A Consular Report of Birth Abroad on Form FS-240, DS-1350, or FS-545.
- A Certificate of Naturalization or Citizenship (N-550, N-570, N-560, or N-561).
Lawful permanent residents can use a permanent resident card (I-551), and authorized non-citizens can use an employment authorization card (I-766).2Illinois Secretary of State. Document Requirements to Obtain a Driver’s License or State ID Card
Social Security Number
Bring one document showing your full nine-digit SSN. Acceptable options include your Social Security card, a W-2, an SSA-1099 or Non-SSA-1099, or a pay stub that displays your name and complete number.3Illinois Secretary of State. Acceptable Documents for REAL ID
The exception matters. If you already hold a valid Illinois driver’s license or state ID and previously provided Social Security documentation, this requirement is waived because the state has already verified your number.1Illinois Secretary of State. REAL ID That is the single biggest paperwork difference between a first-time applicant and someone upgrading an existing license.
If the name on your Social Security record doesn’t match your current legal name, fix it with the Social Security Administration first. The Secretary of State verifies your number electronically against federal databases, and a mismatch stops the application.4Illinois General Assembly. Two Proofs of Illinois Residency
You need two documents showing your full name and current Illinois residential address. The accepted list is broader than most applicants expect:2Illinois Secretary of State. Document Requirements to Obtain a Driver’s License or State ID Card
- Utility bills for electric, water, gas, phone, or cable dated within 90 days.
- Bank or major-brand credit card statements (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, or Diners Club) dated within 90 days.
- A lease, mortgage, or deed or title document.
- A current homeowner’s or renter’s insurance policy.
- Pay stubs or electronic deposit receipts.
- Official mail from a federal, state, county, or city agency, including voter registration cards, jury duty notices, and Social Security statements.
- Certified school transcripts, report cards, or tuition invoices from an accredited institution.
- A credit report from Experian, Equifax, or TransUnion dated within 12 months.
Printed electronic statements work for residency as long as the name, address, and date are visible.1Illinois Secretary of State. REAL ID A document you’re already using for another category can double as a residency proof if it also shows your full name and Illinois address. A W-2, for example, can cover both SSN and one residency slot.2Illinois Secretary of State. Document Requirements to Obtain a Driver’s License or State ID Card
Signature Document
One document has to carry your written signature. Your current Illinois driver’s license qualifies, as does a signed credit or debit card, a U.S. passport, or a canceled check dated within 90 days.1Illinois Secretary of State. REAL ID If you’re upgrading an existing Illinois license, the license itself normally covers this requirement.
Name-Change Documents
If your current legal name is different from the name on your identity document, you have to bring paperwork bridging the two. A certified marriage certificate is the most common link. For a name restored through divorce, a court decree specifying the name change works. Each change in the chain needs its own document, so an applicant who married, divorced, and remarried needs three certified records connecting the birth name to the current one.5Illinois General Assembly. Illinois Administrative Code 92-1030 Appendix D – Acceptable Identification Documents Court-ordered name changes require the original or a certified copy of the court order.
Non-Citizen Applicants
Permanent residents and authorized non-citizens can obtain a REAL ID, but the identity document must also establish lawful status. Acceptable options include the permanent resident card (I-551), employment authorization card (I-766), a refugee travel document (I-571), or an I-94 arrival/departure record paired with a valid foreign passport.2Illinois Secretary of State. Document Requirements to Obtain a Driver’s License or State ID Card The SSN, residency, and signature rules apply the same way. If your immigration status is temporary, the REAL ID’s expiration date will match the expiration on your immigration documents, and each renewal requires updated paperwork.
Format Rules That Get People Turned Away
Documents have to be originals or certified copies issued by the source agency. Photocopies you made at home, notarized versions of an original, and laminated documents are all rejected on sight.2Illinois Secretary of State. Document Requirements to Obtain a Driver’s License or State ID Card Names have to match across every document you present, or be bridged by the name-change records described above. Bring more than you think you need. A licensing agent reviews each document for authenticity before scanning it, and any gap in the chain sends you home to come back another day.4Illinois General Assembly.
