To get a North Carolina driver’s license, you need to bring four categories of documents to the NCDMV: proof of identity and date of birth, proof of your Social Security number, proof of North Carolina residency, and, if you weren’t born in the United States, proof of legal presence. The documents needed for an NC driver’s license are almost the same whether you want a standard license or an NC REAL ID; the one difference is that a REAL ID requires two residency documents instead of one.1North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles. Standard License or NC REAL ID
Decide this before you pack your folder. An NC REAL ID carries a gold star in the top right corner and meets the federal security standards under the REAL ID Act.3North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles. N.C. REAL ID Since federal enforcement began May 7, 2025, you need a REAL ID, U.S. passport, or other federally approved ID to board commercial flights and enter secure federal buildings like military bases and federal courthouses.4TSA. TSA Publishes Final Rule on REAL ID Enforcement Beginning May 7, 2025 A standard license without the star now carries a “Not for Federal Purposes” stamp and still works for driving and most everyday uses, but not those.
Identity, Social Security, and legal presence requirements are the same for both. Only the residency count differs: one document for a standard license, two for a REAL ID.1North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles. Get a License as an Adult Driver
Proof of Identity and Date of Birth
Bring one document that shows your full legal name and date of birth. Acceptable options:2North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles. N.C. REAL ID Requirements
- A certified U.S. birth certificate issued by a county Register of Deeds or state Vital Records Office. Hospital-issued birth certificates and photocopies are not accepted.
- A valid, unexpired U.S. passport.
- A valid, unexpired Permanent Resident Card (Form I-551).
- A Certificate of Naturalization (Form N-550 or N-570).
The document must be issued by a government agency in the United States, a U.S. territory, or Canada. For Puerto Rico, the birth certificate must have been issued on or after July 1, 2010.2North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles. N.C. REAL ID Requirements
Proof of Your Social Security Number
Bring one document showing your full name and complete nine-digit SSN. The NCDMV verifies it electronically, and the number won’t appear on your license. Acceptable documents:2North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles. N.C. REAL ID Requirements
- Your original Social Security card. Photocopies and laminated cards are not accepted.
- A W-2 form showing your full SSN.
- A 1099 form showing your full SSN.
- A payroll record showing your full SSN.
A common trap: many pay stubs display only the last four digits of your SSN. If yours doesn’t show all nine, it won’t work. Your original Social Security card is the safest bet.
Proof of North Carolina Residency
A standard license requires one document showing your name and current NC address. An NC REAL ID requires two.1North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles. Get a License as an Adult Driver Acceptable documents include:2North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles. N.C. REAL ID Requirements
- Any document issued by a North Carolina state, county, or city government, or by the federal government.
- A North Carolina vehicle registration card, insurance policy, or title.
- A North Carolina voter precinct card.
- A utility or cable bill.
- A housing lease or rental agreement, mortgage statement, or property tax statement.
- A bank or financial institution statement.
- Military orders or documents.
- School records.
- A letter from a homeless shelter.
If you’re getting a REAL ID, the two documents should come from different sources. A utility bill and a bank statement work; two bills from the same utility likely won’t. Every residency document must show your current physical address, not a P.O. box.
Proof of Legal Presence for Non-U.S. Citizens
If you were not born in the United States, bring one additional document proving lawful status:2North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles. N.C. REAL ID Requirements
- A foreign passport with a valid U.S. visa and I-94 Arrival/Departure Record. The passport and visa must be unexpired, and the I-94 must be attached.
- A valid, unexpired Permanent Resident Card (Form I-551).
- An unexpired Employment Authorization Document (Form I-766 or I-688B).
If your legal presence document has an expiration date, your NC license will be issued with that same expiration rather than the standard validity period. You’ll need to renew both when the time comes.
Documents for a Name Change
If the name on your identity document doesn’t match the name you want on your license, bring proof of every name change in the chain. Married and took a new last name? Bring the certified marriage certificate. Changed your name through divorce? Bring the divorce decree. Legal name change through the courts? Bring the court order.2North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles. N.C. REAL ID Requirements
Each document must be certified with a raised seal or ink stamp bearing the initials of the person who certified it, and must come from an issuing authority in the state, county, or city where the event occurred.
Extra Documents for Drivers Under 18
Applicants under 18 who haven’t yet earned a high school diploma need to bring a Driving Eligibility Certificate. The state form confirms the teen is currently enrolled in and regularly attending school, making adequate academic progress toward graduation, and has not been suspended for more than ten consecutive days for certain serious offenses like possessing weapons or illegal substances on campus.5NC DOA.
