What Does a Missouri REAL ID Look Like: The Star and Security Features

What does a Missouri REAL ID look like? It looks almost exactly like a standard Missouri driver license, with one small but decisive difference: a star printed in the upper right corner of the front of the card. If your license has that star, it is REAL ID-compliant. If it does not, it is not. Everything else about the card — the bicentennial wave design, the security features, the layout — is shared across both versions.1Missouri Department of Revenue. Missouri REAL ID Information

The Star in the Upper Right Corner

The star is the single identifier that matters. Missouri’s Department of Revenue describes it simply as a star, and on the issued card it appears as a gold or gold-outlined mark set against the card background in the upper right corner of the front.1Missouri Department of Revenue. Missouri REAL ID Information TSA agents and federal security personnel look for the star first when checking whether a license meets REAL ID standards.

Do not confuse the star with the “USA” marking in the upper left corner. That USA label appears on every Missouri license regardless of the holder’s citizenship or immigration status, so its presence tells you nothing about REAL ID compliance.2Missouri Department of Revenue. How a Non-Compliant Missouri License Is Marked

If the license is not REAL ID-compliant, the upper right corner reads “NOT FOR REAL ID PURPOSES” in clear lettering instead of showing a star. That phrase refers specifically to the federal REAL ID Act. It does not mean the card is invalid as identification in Missouri or at the places you would normally use a driver license. It still works for driving, for proving your age, and for day-to-day identification. It just won’t get you through a TSA checkpoint or into a secured federal building.2Missouri Department of Revenue. Side by side, the two cards are otherwise indistinguishable at a glance. Same photo layout, same colors, same back. The star-versus-text swap in that one corner is the reliable tell.1Missouri Department of Revenue. Missouri REAL ID Information

The Rest of the Front of the Card

Missouri licenses use a red, white, and blue wave pattern designed around the state’s bicentennial. The USA marking sits in the upper left, your photo is on the left side, and your personal information runs beside it. Different license classes use different header colors, so a standard Class E license looks slightly different from a commercial license at the top of the card.2Missouri Department of Revenue. Licenses issued to applicants under 21 are printed in a vertical format rather than the horizontal format used for cards issued to people 21 and older. A vertical card can still carry the REAL ID star if the applicant provided all required documents at the time of application.2Missouri Department of Revenue. Security Features Built Into Every Card

Several anti-counterfeiting features appear on both REAL ID and non-compliant Missouri licenses, so none of them tell you anything about compliance by themselves. They are worth knowing about if you want to verify that a card is genuine:

  • A ghost image of the cardholder’s photo printed on the card surface.
  • A laser perforation in the shape of a dogwood flower, Missouri’s state tree, cut through the card material.
  • A laser-engraved tactile feature you can feel with your fingertip.
  • Ultraviolet ink elements that are invisible under normal light and show up under a UV lamp.

These features appear on current-design cards regardless of whether the holder chose the REAL ID version.2Missouri Department of Revenue. FAQs – New Missouri Driver Licenses and Nondriver Identification Cards

What’s on the Back

Flip the card over and you’ll find two barcodes: a linear 1D barcode and a larger square 2D barcode. The 2D barcode holds more detailed encoded information than the 1D strip, and together they let law enforcement, retailers, and federal agents scan the card electronically.3Missouri Department of Revenue. Driver License and Nondriver Identification Card Brochure The REAL ID Act requires every compliant card to include a common machine-readable technology, and these barcodes fulfill that requirement.4Department of Homeland Security. REAL ID Act of 2005 Standard Missouri licenses carry the same barcodes, so again this is not a visual way to tell the two apart.

Why the Star Matters Now

Since May 7, 2025, every air traveler 18 and older needs a REAL ID-compliant license or another federally accepted identification to board a domestic commercial flight. The same requirement applies to entering secure federal facilities and nuclear power plants.5Transportation Security Administration. TSA to Highlight REAL ID Enforcement Deadline of May 7, 2025 A valid U.S. passport will also work in place of a REAL ID at those checkpoints.

So the practical check is this: pull your Missouri license out and look at the upper right corner of the front. A star means you’re set for domestic flights and federal buildings. The words “NOT FOR REAL ID PURPOSES” mean you’ll need to either upgrade the card at a Missouri license office or carry a passport when you fly.1Missouri Department of Revenue.
