An Illinois REAL ID looks almost identical to a standard Illinois driver’s license or state ID, with one deliberate difference: a small gold star inside a gold circle printed in the upper-right corner of the card.1Illinois Secretary of State. REAL ID That star is what TSA agents and federal security officers look for. If your Illinois card has it, it’s a REAL ID. If it doesn’t, the same corner will read “Federal Limits Apply” instead, and the card won’t get you through an airport checkpoint on its own.
The Gold Star in the Upper-Right Corner
The gold circle with a star inside sits in the top-right area of every compliant Illinois license and ID. Its presence means the Secretary of State verified your identity, your citizenship or legal presence, your Social Security number, and your Illinois residency through documents you brought in person.
Non-compliant Illinois cards use the exact same layout but swap the star for the “Federal Limits Apply” text in that same corner. Those cards work for driving, voting, buying age-restricted products, and everyday identification. They just aren’t accepted for federal purposes like boarding a domestic flight.
What’s Printed on the Front
The front of the card carries your primary photograph on the left and a smaller duplicate “ghost” image elsewhere on the face. The second photo is a tamper-check: altering one picture without matching the other is hard to do convincingly.2Illinois Secretary of State. Central Issuance Drivers Licenses/ID Cards
Printed fields show your full legal name, residential address, date of birth, sex, height, weight, and eye color. Your driver’s license number appears as well. Illinois numbers follow a fixed format: one letter followed by eleven digits, twelve characters total, with the letter matching the first letter of your last name. A typical number reads something like D400-7836-0001.3Illinois Department of Human Services. Verifying Identity
Veteran and Organ Donor Markings
Honorably discharged veterans can request the word “Veteran” printed on the face of the card. The Secretary of State’s office asks about veteran status on each original or renewal application.4Legal Information Institute. Registered organ donors see a red silhouette of the state of Illinois with the word “DONOR” inside it, printed near the bottom-right of the card.
Security Features Built Into the Card
Several anti-counterfeiting elements are worked into the card, most of which you’d never notice day to day. A laser-perforated pattern cut through the plastic takes the shape of the state of Illinois. Hold the card up to a light and the outline shows through clearly. It’s one of the fastest ways to confirm a card is genuine on the spot.2Illinois Secretary of State. Central Issuance Drivers Licenses/ID Cards
The face of the card also carries a portrait of Abraham Lincoln and the Great Seal of the State of Illinois.2Illinois Secretary of State. Central Issuance Drivers Licenses/ID Cards Fine-line background patterns and microprinting run across the front. What looks like a solid line or decorative border to the eye resolves into tiny readable characters under magnification, and reproducing that detail on commercial equipment is extremely difficult.
On the back, an ultraviolet security feature duplicates the cardholder’s photo and date of birth. Under normal light it’s invisible. Under UV, the hidden image appears, giving law enforcement and businesses another layer of verification. The point of stacking these features is that defeating any one of them still leaves the others intact.
The Under-21 Vertical Format
If the cardholder is under 21, the card looks completely different at a glance: it’s printed vertically instead of horizontally. Illinois adopted the vertical layout in January 2005, and the shape alone tells bartenders, cashiers, and officers that the holder hasn’t reached the legal drinking age.
The card prints the specific dates the holder turns 18 and 21, so no one has to calculate ages. The vertical card remains valid until its printed expiration date rather than flipping automatically on a birthday, though most people apply for a horizontal replacement once they turn 21.
The Illinois Mobile ID
Illinois also issues a Mobile ID that lives in a smartphone app. The digital version doesn’t try to replicate the physical card. Instead it displays a dynamic image featuring Abraham Lincoln and Illinois landmarks.5Illinois Secretary of State. Illinois Mobile ID Frequently Asked Questions
One visible difference matters for privacy: the Mobile ID never shows your full last name. It displays your first name, middle name or initial, and only your last initial. “Jane Elizabeth Smith” shows as “Jane Elizabeth S.”5Illinois Secretary of State. What the Star Actually Gets You
Federal REAL ID enforcement began on May 7, 2025.7Transportation Security Administration. About REAL ID A valid U.S. passport or passport card works too, as do several other federally accepted IDs.6Transportation Security Administration. Acceptable Identification at the TSA Checkpoint
A REAL ID is not required to drive, vote, enter a police station, or apply for federal benefits like Social Security or VA services.9Department of Homeland Security. ID Requirements for Federal Facilities A standard Illinois license with “Federal Limits Apply” in the corner still handles all of that. The gold star is specifically about getting past federal checkpoints that your old card no longer clears.
