A REAL ID in Oklahoma looks like a regular Oklahoma driver license or state ID card with one visible difference: a star printed in the upper right corner of the card. That star is the marker TSA agents and federal security officers look for. If your Oklahoma license has it, the card is REAL ID compliant. If the star is missing, the card may instead carry the words “NOT FOR REAL ID PURPOSES” near the top.1Service Oklahoma. REAL ID Checklist
The Star in the Upper Right Corner
The star is the single feature that tells you whether your card is compliant. It confirms the credential meets minimum security standards set by the Department of Homeland Security under the REAL ID Act of 2005.2Transportation Security Administration. About REAL ID Hold the card at arm’s length and look at the top right. The star is small but printed clearly against the card’s background.
A card without the star still works as a state-issued ID for everyday use: buying age-restricted products, cashing checks, showing to local law enforcement. What it won’t do is get you through a TSA checkpoint or past the front gate of a military base or federal facility. Since May 7, 2025, federal agencies have been enforcing the REAL ID requirement at those access points.3Transportation Security Administration. REAL ID
Horizontal or Vertical: Oklahoma’s Age Format
Oklahoma uses the card’s orientation to signal age at a glance. Cards issued to people 21 and older are printed horizontally in the standard landscape format. Cards issued to people under 21 are vertical, in portrait format. A bartender or cashier can tell which category you fall into without reading a line of text. The star appears in the upper right of either layout.

Security Features You Can See
A few anti-counterfeiting layers are built into the card and are visible on inspection. A smaller, translucent “ghost” photo of the cardholder is printed over the vital information fields. Any attempt to alter the printed data would visibly distort that overlay, so tampering shows up on sight.
The surface carries a tamper-resistant coating, and the back of the card has 2D and 1D barcodes. Those barcodes let law enforcement and retailers scan the card and compare the encoded data against what appears on the front.
What to Do If Your Card Doesn’t Have the Star
If you look at your Oklahoma license and the star isn’t there, your card isn’t REAL ID compliant. You have two paths. You can apply for a REAL ID through Service Oklahoma, which requires bringing proof of identity, your Social Security number, and two documents proving Oklahoma residency.5Service Oklahoma. A U.S. passport book, passport card, military ID, permanent resident card, DHS trusted traveler card, federally recognized tribal photo ID, or Transportation Worker Identification Credential all work in place of a REAL ID at TSA checkpoints.6Transportation Security Administration. If you already carry a passport in your wallet, the star on your Oklahoma license is a convenience rather than a necessity. For everyone else, that small mark in the upper right corner is what separates a card that gets you on a plane from one that doesn’t.
