What Does a Real ID Look Like in South Carolina: Gold Star

A South Carolina REAL ID looks almost identical to a standard South Carolina driver’s license or ID card, with one deliberate difference: a small gold star printed in the upper right corner of the front. That star is the federal compliance marker. If your card has it, the card meets REAL ID Act standards and will be accepted at TSA checkpoints, federal buildings, and military installations. If it doesn’t, it won’t.1SCDMV. REAL ID

Every state uses a star in roughly the same spot, so federal screeners can confirm compliance at a glance no matter which state issued the card.1SCDMV. REAL ID

How to Tell a Standard South Carolina License Apart

Look at the same upper right corner. On a non-compliant South Carolina card, the phrase “Not for Federal Identification” is printed where the star would be. That text is the state’s way of making the distinction unmistakable: the card is valid for driving, voting, and ordinary everyday identification, but federal agents will turn it away at the airport gate or courthouse door.1SCDMV. There is no third option. Either a star or that notice sits in that corner, and that single feature answers the question.

Other Features on the Card

The rest of the card looks the same whether it’s REAL ID compliant or not. South Carolina licenses and IDs use laser engraving and a stronger card stock to resist tampering and counterfeiting, and the design incorporates Palmetto State imagery. The back carries a PDF417 barcode that encodes your name, date of birth, address, physical description, and license number in machine-readable form.

On a REAL ID, that barcode also carries a compliance indicator in its coded data, and cards issued to people with temporary lawful status include a limited-duration flag. Those fields aren’t something you can see with your eye; they let federal systems verify compliance electronically.2eCFR. 6 CFR Part 37 – Real ID Drivers Licenses and Identification Cards

When the Star Actually Matters

Federal enforcement of the REAL ID Act took effect on May 7, 2025. From that date forward, a compliant card (or an accepted alternative, such as a U.S. passport) is required to:3Transportation Security Administration. REAL ID

  • Board a commercial domestic flight.
  • Enter a secure federal building, such as a federal courthouse or agency office that requires ID at the door.
  • Visit a U.S. military installation.

You don’t need a REAL ID to drive, vote, apply for federal benefits, or handle most daily business. If you already carry a valid U.S. passport or passport card, that satisfies the same federal requirements, and you can keep a standard South Carolina license for everything else.4SCDMV. If Yours Doesn’t Have the Star

South Carolina has issued REAL ID-compliant cards since 2018, but the upgrade is optional. To add the star, you generally need to visit an SCDMV branch in person with original or government-issued documents proving your identity, your Social Security number, and two different proofs of your current South Carolina address. If your legal name has changed since your birth certificate, you also need the paperwork showing each change in the chain.1SCDMV. REAL ID

Some existing customers who already have their documents on file may see an option to buy a REAL ID online through the SCDMV website. If that option doesn’t appear in your account, a branch visit is required. The SCDMV’s United States Citizens’ Checklist (Form MV-93) lists every acceptable document in detail.5South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles. United States Citizens Checklist (SCDMV Form MV-93)

Lawfully present non-citizens can also obtain a REAL ID, using documents such as a permanent resident card, employment authorization document, certificate of naturalization, or a foreign passport paired with a valid U.S. visa and approved I-94. Applicants with temporary lawful status receive a limited-duration card and must apply at a branch that handles international customer transactions.2eCFR. 6 CFR Part 37 – Real ID Drivers Licenses and Identification Cards1SCDMV.
