A Virginia REAL ID looks almost identical to a standard Virginia driver’s license or ID card, with one decisive difference: a small black star printed in the upper right corner of the card face. That star is what makes a card REAL ID-compliant. If your Virginia license shows the star, it meets federal standards. If the same spot reads “Federal Limits Apply,” it doesn’t.1Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. REAL ID
The Star in the Upper Right Corner
The star is the single visual element that distinguishes a REAL ID from a standard Virginia credential. It sits in the upper right corner of the front of the card. TSA officers at airport checkpoints are trained to look for that star (or an accepted alternative document like a passport) when deciding whether a state-issued license is enough to let you board a domestic flight.1Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. Nothing else on the card changes based on REAL ID status. The layout, colors, photo placement, and personal information are the same whether the card is compliant or not. The star is the whole tell.
What a Standard Virginia Card Looks Like
If you opted out of REAL ID, applied before upgrading, or simply never completed the process, your card has no star. Where the star would appear, the words “Federal Limits Apply” are printed instead.1Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. REAL ID That phrase is how Virginia marks a non-compliant card. It’s still a valid Virginia driver’s license or ID for driving, voting, proving your age, and everyday identification. It just won’t get you through a TSA checkpoint or into a federal facility on its own.
The Current Virginia Card Design
Virginia redesigned its license and ID cards in 2023, so the card you’re looking at may differ from older versions in your wallet. The current design uses background imagery of the Richmond Capitol building’s rotunda dome, the American Dogwood (the state flower), and an Eastern Tiger Swallowtail butterfly (the state insect).2Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. New Look of Driver’s Licenses
Driver’s licenses have a blue banner across the top. Standalone ID cards use a green banner. If the cardholder is under 21, the card is oriented vertically rather than horizontally, and the date of birth is printed larger in the lower left so bartenders and clerks can see it quickly.2Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. New Look of Driver’s Licenses REAL ID status is independent of all of these elements; both compliant and non-compliant cards use the same banner colors and background imagery.
Security Features in the Card Itself
Virginia switched to polycarbonate card stock in 2009, so the card has a rigid, almost ceramic feel compared to the softer laminated plastic used by some other states. The polycarbonate base allows certain data to be laser-engraved into the card rather than printed on the surface.3Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. New Card Security Features
A few other security details are worth knowing if you’re trying to confirm a card is genuine:
- A clear window on the card contains a small grayscale version of the cardholder’s photo, visible from both the front and the back.
- A wave-shaped design element sits in the lower right corner.
- A color-shifting pattern changes appearance when the card is tilted.
- Certain design details fluoresce under ultraviolet light.
Information Printed on the Card
The front of every Virginia license carries the same core information in a standardized layout: full legal name, date of birth, residential address, sex, height, and eye color. A unique customer identifier number is printed alongside a license classification code. Most personal-use drivers hold a Class D designation, which authorizes operation of standard passenger vehicles.4Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. VA DMV DL / ID AAMVA PDF
The expiration date appears prominently on the front. Organ donor consent is noted on the card, and veterans can request a “Veteran” designation. Any driving restrictions, such as a corrective lenses requirement, are encoded using numerical codes explained on the back of the card.
Driver Privilege Cards Look Similar But Aren’t REAL ID
Virginia also issues a Driver Privilege Card for residents who cannot demonstrate legal presence in the United States. It uses the same general card format but carries a “D” classification with a “9” restriction code, and it is explicitly not REAL ID-compliant. A Driver Privilege Card cannot be used for domestic flights or to enter federal facilities, regardless of what other markings appear on it.5Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. Limited-term REAL IDs issued to non-citizens with lawful status do carry the star, but their expiration dates are tied to the holder’s authorized period of stay rather than the standard renewal cycle.
If Your Card Doesn’t Have a Star
REAL ID enforcement at TSA checkpoints began on May 7, 2025, and non-compliant state-issued licenses are no longer accepted on their own for boarding domestic flights or entering secure federal facilities.6Transportation Security Administration. One practical warning if you’re planning to upgrade before a trip: TSA does not accept the temporary paper license Virginia issues at the counter. You need the permanent polycarbonate card in hand, which arrives by mail in about 15 days.7Transportation Security Administration.
