A Tennessee driver’s license looks like a polycarbonate card featuring a stylized Tennessee State Capitol in the background, three stars from the state flag representing the East, Middle, and West grand divisions, and fine wave-and-line patterns across its surface. The current design launched on August 19, 2024, and is used for every credential the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security issues, including standard operator licenses, teen and graduated licenses, commercial licenses, motorcycle licenses, photo IDs, Real IDs, and handgun carry permits.1Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security. Horizontal or Vertical Orientation
If you are 21 or older, your license is horizontal, matching the traditional landscape layout. If you are under 21, you receive a vertical card instead, which makes your age obvious at a glance during traffic stops or alcohol purchases.
Tennessee rules require any license issued to someone under 21 to prominently display the words “Under 21” along with the month and year the holder turns 21.2Tennessee Secretary of State. Rules of the Tennessee Department of Safety – 1340-01-13 The vertical card stays in effect until you renew or replace it after turning 21, at which point you receive the standard horizontal version.
The Front of the Card
The background shows the Tennessee State Capitol along with the three state flag stars. Waves and fine-line patterns run across the surface in detail too intricate to be captured by a scanner or recreated on a consumer printer.1Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security. Over that background, Tennessee law requires the front to display a specific set of personal information:
- Your full legal name as shown on your identity documents
- Date of birth
- A full-face color photograph taken at issuance
- Residential address, which may be a street address, route and box number, or P.O. box if you have no street address
- A license number assigned by the department
- License class, indicating the vehicles you are authorized to drive
- Issuance and expiration dates
- A digital facsimile of your signature or a space for a handwritten one in ink
The card also indicates whether it is a duplicate of an original credential.3Justia Law. Tennessee Code 55-50-331 – Examination for, and Issuance, Renewal and Contents of, Licenses – Conditional Licenses
Real ID or Standard License Marking
You can tell a Real ID apart from a standard Tennessee license by one small mark in the upper right corner of the card. A Real ID shows a black circle with a white star inside it.4Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security. REAL ID A standard license carries the text “Not for Federal Identification” in that same spot.
Since May 7, 2025, you need a Real ID or another federally accepted document, such as a passport, to board domestic commercial flights and enter certain federal buildings.5Transportation Security Administration. REAL ID
Special Designations and Endorsements
Depending on your status and the credentials you hold, your license may carry additional markings:
- A military service symbol for honorably discharged veterans who have presented an original or certified DD-214 at a Driver Services Center6Tennessee Department of Veterans Services. Veteran ID
- A red heart if you have registered as an organ donor
- A commercial class designation of A, B, or C for CDL holders, corresponding to the weight ratings and vehicle types they are authorized to operate7State of Tennessee. Commercial Driver License
- An “M” designation for a motorcycle endorsement in addition to a standard operator’s license
Security Features You Can See and Feel
The card itself is made from polycarbonate rather than the laminated PVC used in older Tennessee designs. Polycarbonate resists bending, splitting, and alteration without leaving visible damage.1Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security. Several security features are embedded in the card:
- A ghost image, which is a smaller duplicate of your photograph printed elsewhere on the card with encoded elements for automated validation
- Personal information deliberately layered over design elements, so any attempt to alter one layer disturbs the other
- Laser-engraved elements physically etched into the polycarbonate that you can feel by touch
- Fine-line patterns across the background that scanners cannot accurately capture
When you tilt the card under light, holographic patterns and overlapping text become visible across the surface. These give law enforcement and businesses a quick way to confirm the license is genuine with no equipment at all.
The Back of the Card
On the back, you’ll find a PDF417 two-dimensional barcode, the same format used on driver’s licenses nationwide under American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators standards. The barcode appears as a dense block of stacked horizontal lines and encodes your personal data, license class, and other credential details. Law enforcement officers, retailers verifying age, and TSA agents scan this barcode to pull up your information electronically.
