What Does the Black Star on a Georgia REAL ID Mean?

The black or gold star in the upper right corner of a Georgia driver’s license or ID card means the card is REAL ID-compliant. It meets the federal security standards set by the REAL ID Act of 2005, and since May 7, 2025, that star is what lets you board a domestic flight at a TSA checkpoint or enter most federal buildings where ID is checked at the door.1USAGov. How to Get a REAL ID and Use It for Travel Georgia uses the same marking whether printed in black or gold; both signify the same federal compliance.

What the Star Actually Does for You

The star is a signal to federal agencies that Georgia verified your identity, Social Security number, and residency to the standard the federal government requires. With it, your license works as federally accepted ID. Without it, your license is still a valid state ID for driving, buying alcohol, cashing checks, and dealing with state agencies, but TSA will not accept it at airport security, and you cannot use it to enter restricted federal facilities or military installations.2Georgia Department of Driver Services. Public areas of federal buildings that never required ID in the first place, such as the open parts of a Smithsonian museum, are not affected by the REAL ID rule.3Transportation Security Administration. REAL ID Frequently Asked Questions

Do You Already Have One?

Check the upper right corner of your card. If a star is printed there, in black or gold, you are compliant and need to do nothing further unless you are changing your name or other identity information.2Georgia Department of Driver Services. Georgia REAL ID Information Every Georgia driver’s license and ID card issued after 2012 is REAL ID-compliant, so most people renewing in the past decade already have one. The cards most likely to be missing the star belong to people who opted out when it was still optional, those still carrying an older card issued before 2012, or recent arrivals who have not yet traded in an out-of-state license.

If Your License Has No Star

You have two choices. Keep using something else as your federal ID (a U.S. passport works), or visit a Georgia DDS Customer Service Center and upgrade your license. Getting the star added means proving three things in person with original documents. Photocopies and phone screenshots are not accepted.4Georgia Department of Driver Services. Proof of Identity

One document establishing who you are. A certified birth certificate with a raised seal from a Bureau of Vital Statistics or State Board of Health, a valid U.S. passport, or a Certificate of Naturalization all qualify.2Georgia Department of Driver Services. Georgia REAL ID Information If your current legal name differs from the name on your identity document, you also need certified copies of the marriage certificates, divorce decrees, or court orders that trace the change.

Proof of Social Security Number

Georgia has required a verified Social Security number for every license since 2003, and DDS runs an electronic check against Social Security Administration records when you file your application online.5Georgia Department of Driver Services. Social Security Number Requirements If that check succeeds, you do not need to bring any physical document. If it fails, bring something showing your full number: a Social Security card, a W-2, a 1099, a tax return, or a pay stub.2Georgia Department of Driver Services. Georgia REAL ID Information

Proof of Georgia Residency

Two documents from separate sources, each showing your name and current physical street address, each dated within the past six months. P.O. boxes do not count.6Georgia Department of Driver Services. REAL ID Documents for U.S. Citizens Utility bills, bank or credit card statements, a mortgage statement, a signed lease, or a deed all work. Two bills from the same utility company do not, because they come from the same source.

Fee, Appointment, and When the Card Arrives

An eight-year Georgia driver’s license or ID card costs $32, due at the counter.7Georgia Department of Driver Services. You will leave with a temporary paper document, not the permanent card. The physical license with the star arrives by mail within about 30 days. One warning worth planning around: TSA does not accept the temporary paper license at airport security, so do not book a flight expecting the interim document to carry you through the checkpoint.2Georgia Department of Driver Services. If You Already Carry Another Federal ID

You may not need the star at all. TSA accepts several other forms of identification at security checkpoints: a U.S. passport or passport card, a Department of Defense military ID, a DHS Trusted Traveler card (Global Entry, NEXUS, or SENTRI), an Enhanced Driver’s License issued by certain other states, and photo IDs issued by federally recognized tribal nations.9Transportation Security Administration. About TSA ConfirmID Any one of those lets you fly without a REAL ID indefinitely.

If you show up at the airport without a REAL ID or an accepted alternative, TSA runs an identity verification program called ConfirmID that costs $45 and covers a 10-day travel period.10Transportation Security Administration.
