What Does the New Texas Driver License Design Look Like?

Texas rolled out a redesigned driver license and ID card on August 18, 2025. The new Texas driver license design is printed on polycarbonate instead of layered plastic, carries updated security features, and shows high-resolution imagery of the State Capitol and state flag on the card face.1Texas Department of Public Safety. DPS Rolls Out New Driver License Design You do not need to do anything right now. Your current license stays valid until its printed expiration date, and the new design will come to you automatically the next time you renew, replace, or apply for a card.

What the New Card Looks Like

The first thing you notice is the material. Polycarbonate is rigid. The card feels stiffer than the old one and gives a faint metallic clink when you tap it on a hard surface. The front shows the Texas Capitol, the state flag, and a small silhouette of the state.

The REAL ID marker has changed too. The gold printed star in the upper right corner is gone, replaced by a black star that is laser-engraved into the card itself. Set an old license next to a new one and that star is the fastest way to tell them apart.

Orientation rules stay the same. Cards issued to anyone under 21 remain vertical so bartenders, clerks, and officers can spot a minor at a glance. Everyone 21 and older gets the standard horizontal layout.

Security Features Built Into the Card

Polycarbonate lets DPS embed your information into the layers of the card using laser engraving rather than printing it on the surface. Run a finger across the text on a new card and you can feel it etched in. That makes it much harder for someone to scrape off or alter your details.

A secondary ghost image of your face appears in a semi-transparent window on the card. A counterfeiter would have to replicate both the primary photo and the ghost image, which are produced through different processes. The card also contains ultraviolet ink patterns that are invisible under normal lighting and reveal Texas-specific graphics under a blacklight. Together these layers give law enforcement and businesses more reliable ways to verify the card.

REAL ID Status and Air Travel

Federal REAL ID enforcement started on May 7, 2025, and every Texas license issued under the new design is already compliant.2Transportation Security Administration. REAL ID The black laser-engraved star tells TSA and federal facility security that the card meets the stricter identity standards. If your current license still shows the old gold star, it also qualifies as REAL ID compliant until it expires.

Starting February 1, 2026, travelers who arrive at a TSA checkpoint without a REAL ID or another acceptable identification such as a passport will face a $45 fee to use the TSA ConfirmID process, which attempts to verify identity through alternative means.3Transportation Security Administration. TSA ConfirmID The fee covers a 10-day travel window, and TSA states there is no guarantee the process will succeed. If verification fails, you may not be allowed through security.

Your Current License Is Still Valid

DPS has confirmed that every previously issued card remains legally valid through its printed expiration date.1Texas Department of Public Safety. How to Get the New Design

Two paths lead to a polycarbonate card: an in-person visit or an online renewal if you qualify.

In-Person at a DPS Office

Book a time slot through the DPS online appointment scheduler. Walk-ins are allowed, but appointments cut the wait considerably. At the office you go through a vision screening, have a new photo taken, and provide a digital thumbprint. After the clerk processes your documents and collects the fee, you leave with a temporary paper receipt that serves as your valid license while the permanent card is produced. DPS estimates the polycarbonate card will arrive by mail within two to three weeks.4Department of Public Safety. Where’s My Driver License or ID Card?

Bring documents that prove three things: identity and lawful presence (a U.S. passport, certified birth certificate, certificate of citizenship, or permanent resident card), your Social Security number on file with DPS, and Texas residency (two separate documents in your name showing a Texas address, with at least one establishing 30 days of residence).5Texas Department of Public Safety.
