Kentucky’s WIC program covers a defined list of nutritious foods — milk, cheese, yogurt, eggs, cereal, 100% juice, whole grains, peanut butter, beans, canned fish, tofu, fruits and vegetables, infant formula, and baby food — loaded onto an eWIC card for use at authorized grocery stores. It also covers nutrition counseling, breastfeeding support and pumps, health care referrals, and summertime vouchers for farmers markets. So what does WIC cover in Kentucky in practical terms? A monthly food package tailored to the participant’s category, plus services that go well beyond groceries.
The Approved Food List
Kentucky updated its approved food list in April 2026 to comply with a federal rule revising WIC packages nationwide.114 News. Changes Coming to WIC Food Packages in Kentucky The current list runs through March 31, 2027.2Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services. WIC-Approved Foods These are the categories:

- Fruits and vegetables: Fresh, frozen, or canned, bought with a monthly Cash Value Benefit. Party trays, dried fruit, and items with added sauces or dressings are excluded.
The Cash Value Benefit for Produce
Produce works a little differently from the rest of the list. Instead of a set quantity, participants get a dollar amount loaded onto the eWIC card for the month. For federal fiscal year 2026, the USDA set these at $26 per month for children, $48 for pregnant and postpartum participants, and $52 for fully or partially breastfeeding participants.3USDA Food and Nutrition Service. Infant Formula and Baby Food
Kentucky WIC holds a contract with Abbott Laboratories, which makes Similac the standard formula. Healthy infants not fully breastfed start on Similac Advance. If that doesn’t work, families can try Similac Total Comfort, Similac Sensitive, or Similac Soy Isomil without a prescription. Anything else requires a prescription from a physician, nurse practitioner, or physician assistant, a valid diagnosis, and a mandatory 72-hour trial period.4Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services. For baby food, three categories are covered:2Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services. WIC-Approved Foods
- Infant cereal: 8-ounce containers of dry cereal only, organic allowed. No jars, pouches, or cereals with added fruit, sugar, or formula.
- Infant fruits and vegetables: Jars of plain fruits, vegetables, or simple combinations; organic allowed. Pouches, desserts, and items with added sugar or starch are excluded. Infants can now substitute some or all of their jarred benefit for a cash value of $11 (half) or $22 (full) to buy fresh produce instead.3USDA Food and Nutrition Service. FY 2026 WIC CVV/B Amounts
- Infant meats: 2.5-ounce jars of plain meat with gravy, organic allowed. No chicken sticks, meat sticks, or dinner combinations.
How Much You Get Depends on Who You Are
Package sizes vary by category. Fully breastfeeding women receive the most generous package: 24 quarts of milk, two dozen eggs, a $49 fruit-and-vegetable benefit (Kentucky’s state-set amount), 30 ounces of canned fish, and a pound of cheese, among other items.6Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services. Food Package Assignment Policy Partially breastfeeding women get a smaller version, such as 22 quarts of milk and a dozen eggs. Postpartum women who are not breastfeeding receive the smallest adult package and are eligible for only six months after delivery.
Pregnant women receive 16 quarts of milk, a dozen eggs, 48 ounces of whole grains, 10 ounces of canned fish, and the other standard items.7USDA Food and Nutrition Service. Maximum Monthly Allowances Toddlers 12 to 23 months get 12 quarts of milk and 24 ounces of whole grains; children two through four get 14 quarts of milk and 48 ounces of whole grains.
Services Beyond the Groceries
WIC clinics provide nutrition education on topics like healthy eating during pregnancy, introducing solid foods, and smart grocery shopping.8Lexington-Fayette County Health Department. Breastfeeding support is a core piece of the program: education, telephone counseling, and referrals to lactation consultants. Mothers returning to work or school who plan to keep breastfeeding are eligible for a breast pump through WIC.8Lexington-Fayette County Health Department. Farmers Market Vouchers in the Summer
Kentucky runs a WIC Farmers Market Nutrition Program, active since 1992, that gives eligible participants $30 each summer to spend at participating farmers markets.10Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services. There are 103 participating markets in 92 Kentucky counties; grocery stores and roadside stands do not accept the vouchers.
Using the eWIC Card
Benefits load onto an eWIC card that works like a debit card at checkout. Buy as many or as few approved items as you want in a trip. When paying with another method alongside WIC, swipe the eWIC card first. Coupons and store promotions still apply.2Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services. WIC-Approved Foods
The free WICShopper app, in English and Spanish, is the easiest way to manage benefits. Register the 16-digit card number and you can check the remaining balance, scan a product barcode in the store to confirm it’s WIC-approved, and use a built-in calculator for produce and cereal. The balance also prints on every store receipt.12Louisville Metro Government. WIC Unused benefits do not roll over to the next month, so check balances often.114 News. Who the Program Is For
Everything above is available to Kentucky residents who fall into a covered category — pregnant women, breastfeeding women, postpartum women (up to six months after delivery, or up to a year if breastfeeding), infants, and children under five — with household income at or below 185 percent of the federal poverty level. Anyone already on Medicaid, SNAP, or K-TAP automatically meets the income test.13Northern Kentucky Health Department. WIC Program Fathers and other caregivers can bring an eligible child to appointments and shop with the card; the program itself does not provide food for adults outside the pregnancy, postpartum, and breastfeeding categories.
