What Fast Food Places Take EBT in California?

Fast food chains with locations that accept EBT in California include McDonald’s, Subway, Carl’s Jr., KFC, Jack in the Box, Papa John’s, Wingstop, El Pollo Loco, and Del Taco. Burger King, Pizza Hut, Wendy’s, Popeyes, and Rally’s have also been reported at various locations. Two things have to be true before you can actually pay with your CalFresh benefits at any of them: you have to be enrolled in California’s Restaurant Meals Program (RMP), and the specific restaurant has to be an approved RMP vendor. A chain’s name on this list doesn’t mean every franchise participates.1California Department of Social Services. The CalFresh Restaurant Meals Program

Beyond the national chains, plenty of local restaurants, taquerias, and diners are approved too. The Restaurant Meals Program now operates in all 58 California counties, so approved vendors exist statewide, though density varies.1California Department of Social Services. Who Can Actually Use EBT at Fast Food Restaurants

The Restaurant Meals Program isn’t open to every CalFresh household. Every member of your household has to fall into one of these categories:2Food and Nutrition Service. SNAP Restaurant Meals Program

  • Homeless, meaning you lack a fixed, regular place to live or prepare meals
  • Age 60 or older
  • Receiving disability or blindness payments, or disability retirement benefits from a government agency for a condition considered permanent
  • The spouse of someone who meets one of the above

The “every member” rule is where households get caught. If you qualify but you live with, say, an adult child who doesn’t, the whole household is ineligible for the RMP.1California Department of Social Services. The CalFresh Restaurant Meals Program

Your county social services office decides RMP eligibility when you apply for or recertify CalFresh. If you think you qualify but your card isn’t working at approved restaurants, contact your county office or call the CalFresh Information Line at 1-877-847-3663.1California Department of Social Services. Without RMP enrollment, your CalFresh food benefits only work at grocery stores and other SNAP-authorized retailers. A fast food cashier can’t override that.

Finding a Participating Location Near You

The California Department of Social Services keeps the authoritative list. Its RMP page offers an interactive map and a county-by-county list of every federally approved vendor.1California Department of Social Services. Participating restaurants usually post a sign at the entrance or register. Still, calling the specific location before you go is the safest move, since franchise participation shifts as individual owners opt in or out. Google results and map apps sometimes flag EBT-accepting spots, but they’re not always current. State and county lists are more reliable.

Approval has two layers: the state signs off first, then the USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service authorizes the restaurant.2Food and Nutrition Service. What You Can Order With Your EBT Card

The RMP covers prepared meals and non-alcoholic beverages like milk and juice.1California Department of Social Services. The CalFresh Restaurant Meals Program Alcohol is never covered by SNAP, at any restaurant or store.

Restaurants cannot charge sales tax on items you pay for with SNAP. If part of your order isn’t SNAP-eligible, tax can only be applied to that portion.2Food and Nutrition Service. Because fees aren’t eligible and transactions generally happen in person, third-party delivery apps like DoorDash and Uber Eats aren’t a workable option for RMP purchases. Plan on dining in or picking up at the counter.

Paying at the Register

It works like a debit card. Tell the cashier you’re paying with EBT, swipe, insert, or tap your card at the terminal, and enter your four-digit PIN. The meal total comes out of your CalFresh food benefit balance.

If part of your order isn’t EBT-eligible, say a tip or a beer, the cashier splits the payment. They run the eligible portion on your EBT card first, then take the rest on another payment method. Participating restaurants handle this routinely.

California began rolling out chip-and-tap EBT cards in early 2025 to replace the older magnetic stripe cards. Magnetic-stripe-only cards were set to expire by late 2025.
