What GPA Do You Need for the HOPE Scholarship?

To qualify for the HOPE Scholarship, you need a 3.0 GPA when you graduate from a Georgia high school — but it has to be a 3.0 on the state’s own HOPE GPA calculation, not the cumulative GPA printed on your transcript. The related Zell Miller Scholarship raises the bar to a 3.7 HOPE GPA plus a qualifying SAT or ACT score. Both scholarships also require four rigor credits, and the GPA requirement doesn’t stop at graduation: you have to keep a 3.0 cumulative HOPE GPA in college to continue receiving the award.1Georgia Student Finance Commission. Why the HOPE GPA Isn’t the Number on Your Transcript

Your high school doesn’t decide whether you clear the threshold. The Georgia Student Finance Commission (GSFC) runs its own calculation on every applicant so that students from different school systems and grading scales are measured the same way.3Georgia Student Finance Commission. Understanding the High School HOPE GPA

Only core academic courses from grades 9 through 12 count: English, mathematics, science, social studies, and foreign language. Every grade in those subjects goes into the calculation, including failing grades. Electives are left out entirely.

GSFC puts every grade on a standard 4.0 scale. An A is 4.0, a B is 3.0, a C is 2.0, a D is 1.0, and an F is 0. Pluses and minuses don’t change the value, so a B- counts the same as a B. Any extra weighting your school added for honors or advanced classes is stripped out first.

Then GSFC adds a half point back for Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, and dual enrollment degree-level core courses — but only on grades of B, C, D, or F. An A in one of those courses stays at 4.0 because 4.0 is already the top of the scale. The result is that a transcript GPA and a HOPE GPA can look quite different, especially for students who took a mix of weighted and unweighted classes. You can check your preliminary HOPE GPA by logging into the GAfutures portal.

The Four Rigor Credits You Also Need

A 3.0 HOPE GPA by itself won’t get you the scholarship. You also have to complete at least four full rigor credits from GSFC’s Academic Rigor Course List before you graduate. Fall short on rigor credits and you’re disqualified no matter how high your GPA is.1Georgia Student Finance Commission. Initial Academic Eligibility for the HOPE Scholarship

Qualifying courses include AP, IB, and certain advanced math, science, and other electives listed by the state. Dual enrollment courses in science, math, English, foreign language, or social studies at an eligible Georgia college also count toward rigor, as long as they’re substantially similar to something on the approved list.4GAfutures. The Higher Bar for Zell Miller

Zell Miller uses the same HOPE GPA formula but requires a 3.7 instead of a 3.0. You still need the four rigor credits, and you also need a minimum SAT score of 1200 or the ACT equivalent, as published each January by the College Board and ACT.2Georgia Student Finance Commission. Initial Academic Eligibility for the Zell Miller Scholarship

Test scores are the key difference. HOPE doesn’t require an SAT or ACT score at all for the standard award. If you clear 3.7 on the HOPE calculation but your test score falls short, you get the HOPE Scholarship, not Zell Miller.

Keeping Your 3.0 Once You’re in College

The GPA requirement follows you to campus. To continue receiving HOPE or Zell Miller, you have to maintain a 3.0 cumulative HOPE GPA in college. GSFC checks that number at specific checkpoints rather than every term.5Georgia Student Finance Commission. Academic Eligibility in College

  • At 30, 60, and 90 attempted semester hours (or the quarter-hour equivalents of 45, 90, and 135).
  • At the end of every spring semester in which you received the scholarship during that academic year, even if you weren’t enrolled that spring.
  • At the end of your third paid semester, if you took fewer than 12 hours in each of your first three paid semesters.

Fall below 3.0 at any checkpoint and you lose the scholarship starting the next term.

STEM Courses Get a Boost

The college HOPE GPA calculation adds 0.5 quality points to grades of B, C, or D in eligible STEM courses, similar to the AP and IB weighting at the high school level. The qualifying list spans more than 130 subject areas tied to high-demand fields including engineering, computer science, nursing, and secondary math and science education. GSFC maintains and periodically updates the list.6Georgia Student Finance Commission. Report on College STEM Course Weighting

You Effectively Get One Chance to Recover

If you lose the scholarship, you can only regain it at an attempted-hours checkpoint — 30, 60, or 90 semester hours — not at an end-of-spring checkpoint. Your cumulative HOPE GPA has to be back at or above 3.0 when you hit the next hours milestone.5Georgia Student Finance Commission. Academic Eligibility in College

There’s a hard cap on recoveries. Lose eligibility at two checkpoints of any type since Fall 2011 and you’re permanently disqualified.7Georgia Student Finance Commission. 2025-2026 HOPE Scholarship Program at Public Institutions Regulations In practice, that means one recovery and then it’s gone for good.

How Your GPA Gets Reviewed

There is no separate HOPE application. You apply by submitting either the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or the Georgia Student Finance Application (GSFAPP) through GAfutures.org, and you have to file one of them every year to stay eligible.8Georgia Student Finance Commission. Application Procedure and Deadline for the HOPE Scholarship

The official deadline is the last day of the school term you’re seeking the scholarship for, or your withdrawal date, whichever comes first. Filing early is strongly recommended so the money is in place before tuition is due. Your college also has to certify your enrollment before GSFC releases funds.

Home study students qualify under the same academic standards, though documentation requirements can differ between accredited and unaccredited programs.1Georgia Student Finance Commission. Initial Academic Eligibility for the HOPE Scholarship If your transcript GPA is close to 3.0, check the HOPE GPA calculator on GAfutures before you assume you’re in or out — the recalculation can go either way once school-added weighting is removed and AP, IB, and dual enrollment boosts are added back.
