After passing the road test in Texas, what happens next is a single visit to a Department of Public Safety (DPS) office, where staff verify your documents, take your photo and thumbprints, run a vision screening, collect your fee, and hand you a temporary paper license you can drive on immediately. Your permanent card arrives in the mail two to three weeks later.1Department of Public Safety. Where’s my Driver License or ID card?
If you tested at a third-party driving school rather than at DPS itself, the office needs to see the paperwork or certificate the school gave you with your test results. Without it, DPS cannot credit the exam.
Book the DPS Appointment First
DPS offices handle driver’s license services by appointment only. Schedule yours at txdpsscheduler.com before you go. If you walk in without one, you can try a self-service kiosk inside the office to grab a same-day slot, but availability is not guaranteed and you may be sent home.2Department of Public Safety. What to Bring
Missing a single document can mean rescheduling. Gather all of the following before your appointment:
- Proof of U.S. citizenship or lawful presence, such as a U.S. passport, passport card, or certified birth certificate from a state or local vital statistics office.
- Proof of identity. Your citizenship document often covers this; the DPS brochure lists the full set of accepted options.
- Two documents proving Texas residency, each showing your name and Texas address and dated within the past 180 days (a current lease, mortgage statement, or utility bill).
- Your Social Security card or another document that displays your full SSN.
- Proof of current insurance for each vehicle you own. If you don’t own one, you can sign a statement to that effect at the office.
- Form DL-14A, the application. Fill it out online beforehand or pick one up at the office.
Vehicle registration documents are only required if you’re a new resident surrendering an out-of-state license. If you’ve been living in Texas and just passed the road test, skip them.3Department of Public Safety. Apply for a Texas Driver License
The Fee
A new Texas license is not free. The amount depends on your age:4Department of Public Safety. Driver License Fees
- Under 18: $16, expiring on your 18th birthday.
- Age 18 to 84: $33, valid for eight years.
- Age 85 and older: $9, valid for two years.
Each fee includes a $1 administrative surcharge, which is waived for mail-in transactions. Disabled veterans with a service-connected disability of 60% or greater pay nothing.4Department of Public Safety. Driver License Fees Foster youth, homeless youth, and victims of family or dating violence (along with their children) are also exempt from all license fees.5State of Texas. Inside the DPS Office
Once you check in, a license specialist reviews your documents. You then move through a short sequence:
- Signature and thumbprints, which become part of your biometric record.
- Your photograph, which will appear on the permanent card.
- A basic vision screening. Bring your corrective lenses if you wear them.
When everything clears, DPS prints a temporary paper driver’s license on the spot. It is legally valid for driving right away.3Department of Public Safety. Apply for a Texas Driver License
Staff will also ask whether you want to join the Donate Life Texas organ donor registry; saying yes adds a heart symbol to your permanent card. Declining does not foreclose anything — you can register later through Donate Life Texas without ordering a new card.6Donate Life Texas. About Registration You’ll be offered voter registration at the same time, a standard part of the license application under federal law.
Your Permanent Card in the Mail
The permanent card is mailed to the residential address you provided and typically arrives within two to three weeks of your DPS visit.1Department of Public Safety. Where’s my Driver License or ID card? Before you leave the counter, read every line of the temporary license. A misspelled name or wrong address will reprint onto the permanent card, and correcting it later means another appointment.
If three weeks pass with no card, contact DPS to check the mailing status. Once the permanent card is in hand, destroy the temporary.
REAL ID and the Gold Star
As of May 7, 2025, a REAL ID-compliant license (or another accepted ID such as a U.S. passport) is required to board domestic flights and enter secure federal buildings.7Transportation Security Administration. REAL ID If you brought the full set of documents listed above, your new license should already be compliant. Look for a gold star in the upper-right corner. If it isn’t there and you need one for travel, you’ll have to visit DPS again with the required documents.8Department of Public Safety. Federal Real ID Act
