What Happens If You Turn 18 With a Permit in Texas?

When you turn 18 with a learner permit in Texas, that permit expires on your birthday, and you move from the teen Graduated Driver License track onto the adult first-time applicant process.1Department of Public Safety. Texas Learners License as a Teen The adult path is shorter than the teen program, and most of it can be done before you ever set foot in a DPS office. You do not automatically graduate to a full license, though, so driving the day after your birthday on the old permit is driving without a valid license.

Your Minor Permit Expires the Day You Turn 18

The expiration date printed on your card does not matter once you hit 18. A Texas learner license issued to a minor expires on the holder’s 18th birthday, full stop.1Department of Public Safety. If you still want supervised practice before you take the skills test, apply for an adult instruction permit at a DPS office. It carries the same core rule as the teen permit: a licensed driver who is at least 21 must sit in the front passenger seat whenever you are behind the wheel.2Texas Department of Public Safety. Driver Education You Now Need as an Adult

The Six-Hour Adult Driver Education Course

If you are between 18 and 24, Texas requires a six-hour adult driver education course before you can test.3Department of Public Safety. Choosing a Driver Education Course It covers traffic laws, substance-abuse awareness, and safe driving. Approved providers offer it online or in a classroom, usually for about $25 to $50.

Most approved adult courses include the written knowledge exam. Pass it through the course and you skip that test at DPS. If you are 25 or older, the driver education requirement is waived entirely.4Department of Public Safety. Apply for a Texas Driver License

Impact Texas Adult Drivers (ITAD)

Every new applicant who will take a skills test also has to complete the Impact Texas Drivers program. For ages 18 to 24, the correct version is the one-hour Impact Texas Adult Drivers video. It is free on the DPS website and covers the real-world consequences of distracted and impaired driving.5Department of Public Safety. Impact Texas Drivers (ITD) Program

Timing is tight. Finish ITAD after your driver education course and within 90 days of your skills test, because the certificate expires in 90 days. Print it and bring it with you. Without it, DPS will not administer the skills test.5Department of Public Safety. Impact Texas Drivers (ITD) Program

What Happens If You Drive on the Expired Permit

Driving on a minor permit after your 18th birthday counts as driving without a license. A first offense is a fine of up to $200. Insurance While You Are Still on a Permit

Texas does not require a permit holder to carry their own policy. You are practicing in someone else’s vehicle, and that vehicle is covered under the owner’s policy. The Texas Department of Insurance recommends telling the insurer that a learning driver is using the car. Skip that step and an insurer that finds out after a wreck may deny the claim, cancel the policy, or refuse to renew it.11Texas Department of Insurance. Adding a Teen Driver to Your Insurance Policy

On skills-test day, you need proof of liability insurance on the test vehicle. That is the owner’s responsibility, but confirm the coverage is active beforehand so you are not turned away.
