If your PennDOT camera card expires in Pennsylvania, you lose the temporary driving privilege it carried for 60 days, but your license renewal itself is not canceled. You can still take the expired card to a Driver License and Photo License Center, get your photo taken, and receive your permanent credential. What you cannot do, once those 60 days are up, is keep driving on the card.1Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Class C Camera Card
What the Camera Card Does in the First Place
When you apply for or renew a Pennsylvania driver’s license, PennDOT mails you a camera card within about seven to ten business days. The card is your invitation to visit a Driver License and Photo License Center, where staff take your photo and issue the permanent credential. You bring the camera card along with another form of identification, such as your current license or ID card.2Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Driver Licenses, Learner’s Permits, and ID Cards FAQs
The bottom portion of that card is a temporary driver’s license, good for 60 days from its issue date. Inside that window, the card is what you hand to an officer at a traffic stop. Outside that window, it isn’t.1Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Class C Camera Card
What Expiration Actually Costs You
Two separate things live inside that 60-day period, and only one of them expires.
The temporary driving privilege ends. After day 60, the camera card is no longer a valid license, and driving on it is driving without a valid license, with all the penalties that carries in Pennsylvania.
Your underlying license application does not end. PennDOT still has your renewal on file. The card itself remains the ticket into the photo center, even after it stops working as a license. You can walk in with an expired camera card and finish the process; you just can’t drive yourself there on the strength of it.1Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Class C Camera Card
How to Finish Your Renewal After the Card Expires
Bring the expired camera card and another form of identification, such as your current (or recently expired) license or ID card, to any Driver License and Photo License Center. Staff will take your photo and complete the renewal.2Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Driver Licenses, Learner’s Permits, and ID Cards FAQs
If the camera card never arrived in the first place, don’t assume it will turn up. Contact PennDOT’s Customer Call Center at 717-412-5300, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., to check the status.2Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Driver Licenses, Learner’s Permits, and ID Cards FAQs
What Happens at the Photo Center
Once your photo is taken, you leave with a new temporary driver’s license that is valid for 15 days. Your permanent card arrives in the mail during that window. If it doesn’t show up by the time the 15 days are closing in, call PennDOT at the same number to check on it.3Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Temporary Driver’s License FAQs
Driving During the Gap
Nothing in the camera card process restores driving privileges between day 61 and the day you reach the photo center. If you let the card lapse, plan to get to a Driver License Center without driving yourself. Someone else at the wheel, public transit, or a rideshare will keep you out of a separate problem on top of the renewal you’re trying to finish.
A Note on the Other “Camera Card”
People sometimes use “camera card” to mean an automated traffic enforcement notice from a red light camera or a work zone speed camera. Those are a different document with different deadlines. A violation notice gives you 30 days from the mailing date to pay the fine or request a hearing, and for work zone speed camera violations, payment needs to be received within 90 days of the mailing date or PennDOT or the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission can refer the unpaid fine to a collection agency.4Pennsylvania General Assembly. Key Dates to Keep Straight
- Camera card as a temporary license: valid 60 days from the issue date.
- Camera card as an entry pass to the photo center: no expiration; bring it in whenever you can get there.
- Temporary license issued at the photo center: valid 15 days while your permanent card is in the mail.
An expired camera card is a smaller problem than it feels like, as long as you stop driving on it and get to a photo center. The renewal is still waiting for you.
