What Is a Louisiana REAL ID Card and How to Get One

A Louisiana REAL ID is a driver’s license or state identification card issued by the Office of Motor Vehicles that meets the federal security standards set by the REAL ID Act of 2005. Since May 7, 2025, you need one (or another federally accepted ID like a U.S. passport) to board a domestic flight or enter certain federal buildings. The card costs the same as a standard Louisiana license, but you have to apply in person and bring original documents.

How to Tell If You Already Have One

Look at the top of your current card. A Louisiana REAL ID has a white star with a gold outline printed on the upper portion.1Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles. The star is only there to tell a TSA officer or federal security guard that the card meets the federal standard.

Documents You Need to Bring

Photocopies are not accepted. Every document has to be an original, and every document you bring must show the same name. Gather paperwork in four categories before you go.

Proof of Identity, Birth Date, and Lawful Status

One document covers all three. A U.S. birth certificate issued by a state vital records office or a valid, unexpired U.S. passport will do it. The birth certificate is what most people use because they already have one.2Louisiana Department of Public Safety. Louisiana Policy 6.03 – Requirements for Issuance of a Real ID

Social Security Number

Louisiana is easier than many states here. You can give your Social Security number verbally at the counter, and the OMV verifies it electronically with the Social Security Administration.2Louisiana Department of Public Safety. Two Proofs of Louisiana Residency

You need two documents showing your name and Louisiana street address, from two separate sources. Accepted documents include:1Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles. REAL ID – Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles

  • Utility bills (water, electric, gas, cable, internet, phone, or garbage)
  • Bank, credit union, investment, credit card, or loan statements
  • Mortgage statement, deed, property tax bill, rental agreement, or rent receipts
  • Homeowners insurance policy, premium bill, or auto insurance policy
  • Paycheck stub, employer letter on company letterhead, W-2, or military orders
  • State or federal tax return, Louisiana voter registration card, or unexpired firearms license
  • Health insurance statement, explanation of benefits, or a medical bill
  • School transcript, report card, or student loan application

If your current Louisiana driver’s license or ID already shows your present address, it counts as one of the two. You then only need one more document from the list.1Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles. REAL ID – Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles

Name Change Papers, If Your Name Doesn’t Match

If the name on your birth certificate isn’t the name you use now, you need the paperwork that bridges the two. A certified marriage certificate or a court order for a legal name change both work. One exception worth knowing: if you already hold an out-of-state license in your married name, Louisiana won’t ask for the marriage certificate on top of it.2Louisiana Department of Public Safety. Where to Apply

You have to apply in person. Any OMV field office or participating Public Tag Agent can issue the card.2Louisiana Department of Public Safety. Louisiana Policy 6.03 – Requirements for Issuance of a Real ID Booking an appointment through the OMV website before you go will usually save you a long wait. At the counter, an agent reviews your original documents and takes a new photo.

You may walk out with a temporary paper ID. The permanent card arrives by mail, usually within 30 days. If it hasn’t shown up after 30 days, go to an OMV field office within 60 days of your application date and you can get a free replacement.3Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles. What It Costs

The REAL ID itself costs no more than a standard Louisiana license or ID. There’s no extra charge for the star.1Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles. REAL ID – Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles On top of the base license fee, the OMV adds a $12 handling charge for new applications, renewals, and duplicates.4Louisiana State Legislature. Louisiana Revised Statutes RS 32:412.1 Children in foster care are exempt from that charge.

If you use a Public Tag Agent, expect a convenience charge of up to $23 per transaction on top of the OMV fees.5Justia Law. Louisiana Revised Statutes Title 47 – RS 47:532.1 The agent must disclose that charge before starting the transaction.

Renewing Without Losing the Star

A Louisiana Class D or Class E driver’s license is valid for six years, expiring on the birthday nearest the six-year mark.6Louisiana State Legislature. Louisiana Revised Statutes RS 32:412 – Amount of Fees; Credit or Refund; Duration of License Non-citizens get a shorter validity period that matches their authorized stay.

Here’s the trap. If you renew your license online, the new card prints “Not for Federal Identification” and loses the REAL ID star. To keep the star, you have to renew in person at an OMV field office or Public Tag Agent.3Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles. When You Don’t Actually Need One

Your standard Louisiana license still works for driving and for every non-federal purpose in the state. The REAL ID requirement only matters at TSA airport checkpoints and at the entrances to federal facilities like military bases, federal courthouses, and nuclear power plants.7Department of Homeland Security.
