What Is a Quick Title in Washington State? Cost and Eligibility

A quick title in Washington State is a certificate of vehicle or boat ownership that the Department of Licensing prints at the counter while you wait, instead of mailing it to you six to eight weeks later.1Washington State Department of Licensing. The document itself is identical to a standard Washington certificate of ownership. Only the speed and cost differ.

When a Quick Title Is Worth It

The usual reason to pay for a quick title is that someone needs the paper document now. A common case is selling your vehicle to an out-of-state buyer who has to register it at home before they can legally drive it there. Few buyers will wait two months for a title to show up in your mailbox and then yours to forward.

Lenders are the other frequent trigger. If you’re using a vehicle as collateral for a loan, the lender often wants the physical title before releasing funds. The same goes for adding or removing a lienholder, or getting a clean title in your hands right after paying off a loan.

If none of that applies to you, the standard title is cheaper and arrives on its own by mail in roughly six to eight weeks.1Washington State Department of Licensing. Buy and Register a Vehicle

Which Vehicles Qualify

Quick titles are available for cars, trucks, motorcycles, boats, and other vehicles that already have an existing Washington title on record. The word “existing” matters. A vehicle that has never been titled in Washington cannot get a quick title, so if you’re bringing a vehicle in from another state and registering it here for the first time, you have to go through the standard process.2Washington State Department of Licensing. The DOL also excludes:

  • Snowmobiles
  • Vehicles or boats flagged as reported stolen
  • Insurance or wrecker destroyed vehicles and boats
  • Vehicles branded “WA rebuilt” on the title

If your vehicle lands in any of these categories, the standard title process is your only option.2Washington State Department of Licensing. Quick Title Offices

What to Bring

You’ll fill out the Vehicle Title Application (Form TD-420-001). State law requires the application to include:3Washington State Legislature. RCW 46.12.555 – Quick Title Application Requirements

  • The vehicle’s make, model, VIN, body type, and odometer reading at delivery
  • The full name and address of the registered owner
  • The name and address of any lienholder
  • The most recent certificate of title, or other satisfactory proof of ownership

Every registered owner has to sign the form, either in front of a licensed notary or in person at the licensing office.4Washington State Department of Licensing. If an owner can’t appear, the DOL’s power of attorney form (TD-420-050) lets you appoint someone to sign for a specific vehicle; that authorization ends if the person who granted it dies.5Washington State Department of Licensing. Depending on how you got the vehicle, you may also owe Washington use tax at the counter. It applies when the vehicle came from a state without sales tax, or when money, goods, or services changed hands as part of the transfer.6Washington State Department of Licensing. Use Tax

Where to Go and What It Costs

Not every licensing office prints quick titles. The DOL keeps a specific list of participating offices, roughly 100 locations across the state, including county auditor offices and private licensing agents in Seattle, Spokane, Vancouver, Tacoma, Bellingham, and smaller communities. Check the DOL’s quick title office page and confirm the nearest one before you drive over.2Washington State Department of Licensing. Quick Title Offices

The all-in cost is:

  • Vehicles: $89.50
  • Boats: $80.75

Those totals cover the title application fee, filing fee, service fee, and the quick title service fee set by RCW 46.17.160.2Washington State Department of Licensing. Once your paperwork and payment are in, the office prints the title and hands it to you before you leave.

If Your Vehicle Doesn’t Qualify

For out-of-state vehicles being titled in Washington for the first time, rebuilt-branded vehicles, and the other excluded categories, you’re on the standard track. Apply at any vehicle licensing office and wait six to eight weeks for the title to arrive by mail.1Washington State Department of Licensing. If you’re buying privately, settle any title or lien issues before money moves. A vehicle without a clean Washington title can bring hidden liens, insurance headaches, and a slow fight over who actually owns it.
