What Is a REAL ID in Texas: Documents, DPS Visit, and Cost

A Texas REAL ID is a standard Texas driver license or identification card that meets federal security standards, marked by a small gold star in the upper right corner. Since May 7, 2025, you need one (or another federally accepted ID like a passport) to board a domestic flight or enter a federal facility. Texas began issuing compliant cards on October 10, 2016, so if you have renewed since then, there’s a good chance you already have one.1Texas Department of Public Safety. Federal Real ID Act

How to Check the Card You Already Have

Pull out your license and look at the top right. A compliant card shows a gold circle with a star cut out of it. A non-compliant card shows the phrase “Not for Federal Identification” in that spot.1Texas Department of Public Safety. Federal Real ID Act

Both versions remain valid for driving, banking, voting, and other state-level purposes until the printed expiration date. The star only matters when a federal agency is checking your ID.

What a REAL ID Is For

You need a REAL ID (or another acceptable federal ID) for three things:2Transportation Security Administration. About REAL ID

  • Boarding a domestic commercial flight.
  • Entering a federal building that checks ID at the door.
  • Accessing a nuclear power plant or certain military installations.

You do not need one to drive, vote, apply for Social Security, or complete any state-level transaction. A standard non-compliant Texas license still handles all of that.1Texas Department of Public Safety. Federal Real ID Act

What Happens at the Airport Without One

Enforcement is live. Show up at a TSA checkpoint with a non-compliant Texas license and no other accepted ID, and you will not be allowed through.3Transportation Security Administration. REAL ID

Starting February 1, 2026, TSA offers a backup called TSA ConfirmID. The fee is $45, it covers a 10-day travel window, and each adult without acceptable ID pays separately. TSA attempts to verify your identity through an alternative process, but there’s no guarantee it works; if verification fails, you still don’t get through. TSA recommends prepaying online through Pay.gov before you reach the airport to keep checkpoint waits shorter.4Transportation Security Administration. TSA ConfirmID

You can also skip the REAL ID question entirely at the checkpoint with a U.S. passport or passport card, a military ID, a permanent resident card, a Global Entry or NEXUS card, or a tribal photo ID.5Transportation Security Administration. Documents You Need to Bring

Getting a Texas REAL ID means an in-person visit to a DPS office with original documents. Photocopies are not accepted.6Department of Public Safety. Identification Requirements You need something from each of these categories.

Identity and Lawful Presence

One document proving who you are and that you are legally in the United States. For most citizens, that’s an original or certified copy of a birth certificate, or a valid unexpired U.S. passport.7Texas Department of Public Safety. U.S. Citizenship or Lawful Presence Requirement

Social Security Number

DPS verifies your number electronically with the Social Security Administration during the visit. Bringing your Social Security card is the easiest way to make sure the number is entered correctly.8Texas.gov. Texas REAL ID

Two Proofs of Texas Residency

Two separate documents showing your name and a physical Texas address. A P.O. box doesn’t count. Utility bills, mortgage statements, residential leases, and bank statements are all common choices. Utility bills must be dated within 180 days, and at least one of your two documents must show you’ve lived in Texas for 30 days or more.9Texas Department of Public Safety. Name-Change Paperwork, If Any

If your current legal name doesn’t match the name on your birth certificate or passport, bring original documents for every link in the chain. Marriage license for a married name. Divorce decree or court order for any other change. Married, divorced, and remarried means all three documents.8Texas.gov. The DPS Visit

Texas DPS driver license offices run by appointment only. Book through txdpsscheduler.com. If you walk in, you can try a lobby self-service kiosk for same-day openings, but nothing is guaranteed.10Department of Public Safety. Driver License Services – Appointments

At the visit, you hand over your documents, give thumbprints and a signature, and have your photo taken.11Texas Department of Public Safety. If you’re flying during the waiting period, bring a passport. The paper receipt lets you drive, but TSA will not accept it.

What It Costs

There is no separate REAL ID fee. You pay the standard driver license or ID card fee for whatever transaction you’re doing:14Texas Department of Public Safety. Driver License Fees

  • Driver license renewal, ages 18–84: $33
  • Replacement driver license (lost, stolen, or damaged; no change to expiration): $11
  • ID card, new or renewal, age 59 and younger: $16
  • ID card, new or renewal, age 60 and older: $6
  • Replacement ID card: $11

Each fee includes a $1 administrative charge, and you pay at the office during your visit.

Upgrading Early and Renewing Online

You don’t need to wait for your current card to expire. Texas lets you renew up to two years before the expiration date, so if you have travel coming up and no star on your card, you can go now.15Department of Public Safety. Renew Your Texas DL, CDL, Motorcycle License or ID

Already have a compliant card and just need to renew it? You may be able to do it online instead of in person. Eligibility depends on age, citizenship status, and how your last renewal was handled; DPS has an online tool that tells you whether you qualify.16Texas.gov. Online Services Eligibility for Texas Driver License and ID Cards The first upgrade from a non-compliant card to a REAL ID, though, has to happen in person so a clerk can see your original documents.

Non-Citizens and Limited-Term Cards

Non-citizens with lawful presence can get a Texas REAL ID. Acceptable documents include a valid permanent resident card, an unexpired foreign passport with a valid I-94, or an employment authorization document. DPS verifies your status with the Department of Homeland Security before issuing the card, which adds processing time.7Texas Department of Public Safety. U.S. Citizenship or Lawful Presence Requirement

If your lawful presence has a set end date, your Texas card expires on that same date rather than following the standard cycle. DPS calls these limited-term cards. When renewal time comes, start at least 30 days early so the DHS verification has time to clear.
