Sales tax on a car in Utah starts at the state rate of 4.85% and climbs from there once your county, city, and any local district taxes are added in. The combined rate that actually applies to your purchase is the one tied to the address where you register the vehicle, not where you buy it. That tax is calculated on the price after trade-in value and manufacturer rebates come off, and it’s due whether you buy from a dealer, a neighbor, or a seller in another state.
How the Combined Rate Is Built
The statewide piece is 4.85%, made up of a 4.70% base plus a 0.15% supplemental rate.1Utah Legislature. Utah Code 59-12-103 Every buyer in Utah pays at least that much. Counties, cities, and special taxing districts stack their own rates on top, so a buyer in a rural county pays noticeably less than one in a city with transit and infrastructure taxes.
The rate follows your registration address. Driving across the state for a better price on a truck doesn’t lower what you owe; the home jurisdiction’s combined rate is what the tax commission expects. The Utah State Tax Commission publishes a combined rate chart each quarter, broken down by jurisdiction.2Utah State Tax Commission. What Price the Tax Applies To
Tax is charged on the net purchase price, not the sticker. Utah lets you subtract a qualifying trade-in, so you pay only on the difference. A $35,000 SUV with an $8,000 trade-in is taxed on $27,000.3Utah Legislature. Utah Code 59-12-104
How the trade-in works depends on the seller. At a dealership, any qualifying tangible property can be traded in. In a private sale, the trade-in has to be another vehicle. Either way, put the agreed value on the bill of sale. Without written documentation, the state uses fair market value, which may come in below what you and the seller settled on.4Utah Division of Motor Vehicles. Responsibilities of Buyer and Seller
Manufacturer rebates also come off the taxable price. A $3,000 rebate on a $40,000 vehicle drops the taxable amount to $37,000.5Utah State Tax Commission. Confirm both appear on the sales contract before the tax line is calculated.
Who Collects the Tax
A licensed Utah dealership collects the sales tax at the time of sale and remits it to the Utah State Tax Commission. It appears as a line item on your purchase agreement, and the dealer cannot push the obligation onto you to pay later at the DMV.5Utah State Tax Commission. Private sales work the other way around. The seller collects nothing. You owe the full sales tax when you title and register the vehicle at the county clerk or DMV office. Bring the signed title and a bill of sale showing the purchase price, and expect to pay the tax that day. Delaying registration can add late fees.
Gifts Between Family Members
A true gift with no money changing hands is not a taxable sale. If a relative signs the title over to you for free, there’s no tax. The qualifier is “no consideration.” Paying even a small amount, or exchanging services or other property, can turn the transfer into a sale taxed on fair market value.5Utah State Tax Commission. Buying a Car Out of State
Bring a vehicle in from another state and Utah charges use tax at your local combined rate. The purpose is to keep buyers from avoiding Utah tax by shopping across state lines.
You get a dollar-for-dollar credit for any sales or use tax already paid elsewhere. If the other state’s rate matched or beat Utah’s, you owe nothing more.3Utah Legislature. Utah Code 59-12-104 Hold on to your receipt or proof of tax paid, because you’ll need it at registration. The credit covers legitimate sales and use taxes only. Property taxes, foreign VAT, and import duties don’t qualify.
Other Fees Due at Registration
Sales tax is usually the biggest number, but several other charges land at the registration window. The uniform age-based registration fee is the main one. For passenger cars, light trucks, SUVs, and vans, the 2026 schedule is:6Utah Division of Motor Vehicles. Uniform Fees
- 2024–2026 models: $150
- 2021–2023 models: $110
- 2018–2020 models: $80
- 2015–2017 models: $50
- 2014 and older: $10
Counties can add a local option highway construction fee in whole-dollar increments. Title transfer, license plate, and in some counties an emissions-related fee also apply. For a new vehicle, these add-ons together typically run $250 to $400 on top of the sales tax. The Utah DMV offers an online fee estimator for a personalized total based on your vehicle and county.7Utah Division of Motor Vehicles. Registration Taxes and Fees
Electric vehicle owners pay an added flat fee at registration to replace fuel tax revenue. For the 2026 registration year, that fee is $180.8Utah Road Usage Charge Program. Utah Road Usage Charge Program Utah also offers a per-mile road usage charge as an alternative, and depending on how much you drive, one option may be cheaper than the other.
Deducting the Tax on Your Federal Return
Utah sales tax on a vehicle may be deductible on your federal return if you itemize. In any given year, you choose between deducting state income tax or state sales tax. If you bought a car, the sales tax route often wins, because the vehicle tax can be added on top of either the IRS sales tax tables or your actual receipts.
For 2026, the combined state and local tax deduction is capped at $40,400 for most filers. Property tax, income or sales tax, and other qualifying state and local taxes all count against that cap. A large vehicle purchase won’t move your federal bill if property and income taxes have already filled the ceiling.
