The Basic Governmental Services Tax in Clark County is an annual vehicle tax of 5 cents on every dollar of your car’s depreciated valuation: 4 cents for the statewide basic rate plus a 1-cent county supplement. The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles collects it each time you register or renew, and it stands in place of a traditional personal property tax on vehicles.1Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles. Nevada Vehicle Registration Fees Because the amount tracks your vehicle’s original price and shrinks on a fixed depreciation schedule, your bill drops in predictable steps as the car ages.
How the Amount Is Calculated
The calculation starts with your vehicle’s original Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price, not the price you actually paid and not including factory options. Nevada law sets the taxable valuation at 35 percent of that base MSRP, and that 35 percent figure is locked in for the life of the vehicle.2Nevada Legislature. Nevada Code 371 – Governmental Services Tax
The statewide basic rate is 4 cents per dollar of valuation. In Clark County, the supplemental tax adds another penny, bringing the combined rate to 5 cents per dollar.1Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles. Nevada Vehicle Registration Fees You don’t pay that rate on the full valuation forever, though. A depreciation table built into state law reduces the taxable percentage each year.
Depreciation Schedule
For standard passenger vehicles, the taxable share of the base valuation steps down each year:3Nevada Legislature. Nevada Code 371-060 – Schedules for Depreciation; Minimum Amount of Tax
- New: 100 percent
- 1 year old: 95 percent
- 2 years old: 85 percent
- 3 years old: 75 percent
- 4 years old: 65 percent
- 5 years old: 55 percent
- 6 years old: 45 percent
- 7 years old: 35 percent
- 8 years old: 25 percent
- 9 years or older: 15 percent
Once your vehicle hits nine years old, it bottoms out at 15 percent and stays there for the rest of its registered life. Heavy trucks, buses, and large trailers follow a separate schedule.
A Worked Clark County Example
Here is how the Nevada DMV calculates the tax for a two-year-old vehicle with an original MSRP of $20,000:1Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles. Nevada Vehicle Registration Fees
- Base valuation: $20,000 × 0.35 = $7,000
- Depreciated valuation: $7,000 × 0.85 = $5,950
- Basic GST: $5,950 × $0.04 = $238
- Supplemental GST (Clark County): $5,950 × $0.01 = $60 (after rounding)
- Total: $298
By year nine, the same vehicle would owe roughly $59 in basic tax plus about $15 in supplemental, for a total near $74. The base valuation of $7,000 never changes; only the depreciation percentage moves.
Why Clark County Charges an Extra Penny
The 1-cent supplemental tax exists because voters approved it. Nevada law lets counties with a population of 700,000 or more impose up to 1 cent per dollar of valuation as a supplemental Governmental Services Tax, provided a majority of voters agree at a general, primary, or special election.2Nevada Legislature. Nevada Code 371 – Governmental Services Tax Clark County and Churchill County are currently the only Nevada counties charging it.1Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles. Nevada Vehicle Registration Fees
The supplemental money is earmarked mainly for road and highway work: construction, maintenance, overpasses, underpasses, and related infrastructure within the county. It can also flow through an interlocal agreement with the Regional Transportation Commission, and in counties as large as Clark it may support general operating costs as well.2Nevada Legislature. Exemptions That Reduce the Bill
Several categories of Nevada residents qualify for exemptions that trim the taxable valuation of their vehicle. You have to claim the exemption at the time you register or renew. The DMV won’t apply it retroactively.1Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles. Nevada Vehicle Registration Fees
Veterans
Veterans who served at least 90 days of active duty during a qualifying conflict period and received an honorable discharge can exempt the first $2,000 of their vehicle’s determined valuation. The qualifying periods run from the Spanish-American War through the Gulf War era and also cover service tied to any federally authorized campaign medal.2Nevada Legislature. Nevada Code 371 – Governmental Services Tax
Disabled Veterans
Veterans with a permanent service-connected disability get a much larger exemption, tiered by rating:2Nevada Legislature. Nevada Code 371 – Governmental Services Tax
- 100 percent disability: first $20,000 of determined valuation exempt
- 80 to 99 percent disability: first $15,000 exempt
- 60 to 79 percent disability: first $10,000 exempt
A vehicle’s determined valuation only exceeds $20,000 when the original MSRP is above roughly $57,000, so a veteran rated at 100 percent disability pays nothing in Governmental Services Tax on most vehicles. Surviving spouses of disabled veterans qualify for the same tier.
Surviving Spouses and Blind Residents
A surviving spouse who hasn’t remarried can exempt the first $1,000 of determined valuation (adjusted annually for inflation since 2003). A legally blind resident can exempt the first $3,000.2Nevada Legislature. Nevada Code 371 – Governmental Services Tax Both require filing an affidavit with the county assessor; the assessor mails a renewal form each year after the initial filing.
Deducting the Tax on Your Federal Return
Because the Governmental Services Tax is based on vehicle value rather than weight, the IRS treats it as a deductible personal property tax. If you itemize on Schedule A, you can include both the basic and supplemental GST in your state and local tax (SALT) deduction.4Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 503, Deductible Taxes The flat registration fee Nevada charges separately based on vehicle weight doesn’t qualify.
For 2026, the SALT deduction is capped at $40,000 for most filers ($20,000 if married filing separately), with a phase-down based on modified adjusted gross income that cannot push the cap below $10,000.4Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 503, Deductible Taxes Nevada has no state income tax, so your vehicle tax and any property taxes usually make up the bulk of the SALT total, which leaves most Clark County residents room under the cap to deduct the full GST.
If You Pay Late
Letting a registration lapse costs more than a single late fee. The DMV charges the full registration and taxes for the coming year, plus pro-rated Governmental Services Taxes for every month the vehicle sat unregistered.1Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles. Nevada Vehicle Registration Fees
Two penalties stack on top of the back-taxes. The flat registration fee carries a $6 charge for each 30-day period the payment is late.5Nevada Legislature. Nevada Code 482-515 – Delinquent Fees The Governmental Services Tax itself carries a 10 percent penalty on the past-due amount (with a $6 minimum), recalculated every 15 days.1Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles. Nevada Vehicle Registration Fees If the vehicle wasn’t driven on any public road during the lapse, you can sign an affidavit of nonoperation to waive the late registration penalty.
