The Coffee County, Alabama sales tax rate ranges from 5% to 9%, depending on where in the county you buy and what you’re buying.1Coffee County, Alabama. New Residents Shoppers in unincorporated parts of the county pay the 5% floor. Shoppers inside the limits of Enterprise, Elba, or New Brockton pay the full 9%.
How the Rate Is Built
Every purchase in Coffee County carries three possible layers of sales tax. The state of Alabama charges 4% on general merchandise.2Alabama Legislature. Alabama Code 40-23-2 – Tax Levied on Gross Proceeds of Sales Coffee County adds 1% on top of that, which gets you to a 5% baseline anywhere in the county.1Coffee County, Alabama. New Residents If the store sits inside an incorporated city, that city adds its own municipal rate, which in Coffee County can be as high as 4%.
So the 5% rate applies at a gas station on a rural highway or a farm supply store outside town. The 9% rate kicks in once you cross a city line.
Rates in Enterprise, Elba, and New Brockton
Coffee County’s three main incorporated cities all land at the same combined rate. Enterprise, the county’s largest city, levies a 4% municipal tax for a total of 9%.1Coffee County, Alabama. New Residents Elba, the county seat, also comes in at 9%. New Brockton carries the same 9% combined rate.
On a $1,000 purchase, the gap between shopping inside a city and shopping in an unincorporated area works out to $40.
Lower Rate on Groceries
Groceries are taxed in Alabama, but the state portion is lower than for general merchandise. Effective September 1, 2025, the state sales tax on food dropped from 3% to 2% under Act 2025-305.3Alabama Department of Revenue. NOTICE State Sales and Use Tax Rate Reduced on Food Beginning September 1, 2025 Coffee County grocery shoppers pay that reduced 2% state rate plus the county’s 1% and any city tax.
For a family spending $200 a week on groceries inside a city, the step down from 3% to 2% saves roughly $16 a month in state tax alone. Alabama has been phasing the grocery rate down in stages, so check the Alabama Department of Revenue’s current rates before counting on a specific number.4Alabama Department of Revenue. Vehicles, Farm Equipment, and Machinery
Big-ticket purchases get a lighter rate. Alabama taxes vehicle sales at 2% rather than 4%, and manufacturing machinery and farm equipment at 1.5%.2Alabama Legislature. Alabama Code 40-23-2 – Tax Levied on Gross Proceeds of Sales Coffee County also applies a reduced rate on these categories rather than its standard 1%.
On a $35,000 vehicle, the 2% state rate costs $700 instead of the $1,400 you’d owe at the general 4% rate. For farmers and manufacturers buying equipment that routinely runs into six figures, the 1.5% rate saves considerably more.
Online and Out-of-State Purchases
