The vehicle registration grace period in NC is 15 days. Under G.S. 20-66(g), law enforcement cannot cite you for expired plates until the sixteenth day after your registration sticker’s expiration date.1North Carolina General Assembly. North Carolina Code 20-88.03 – Late Fee; Motor Vehicle Registration That window keeps you out of trouble on the road. It does not stop the late fees or the property tax interest that start building the moment your registration expires.
What the 15 Days Actually Protect You From
The protection is narrow. If your registration expires on May 31, you can legally drive through June 15. On June 16, the shield is gone, and driving an unregistered vehicle becomes a Class 3 misdemeanor under G.S. 20-111.2North Carolina General Assembly. North Carolina Code 20-111 – Violation of Registration Provisions
The statute is explicit that the grace period “shall not apply to any late fee assessed” for overdue registration.1North Carolina General Assembly. North Carolina Code 20-88.03 – Late Fee; Motor Vehicle Registration Renew on day two of the grace period and you still owe a late fee. The 15 days are a traffic-stop buffer, nothing more.
What Renewing Late Will Cost
NCDMV charges a tiered late fee on top of your normal renewal cost:
- Less than one month expired: $15
- One to two months expired: $20
- Two or more months expired: $25
These amounts come from G.S. 20-88.03, and the clock starts the day after expiration, not at the start of the next calendar month.1North Carolina General Assembly. North Carolina Code 20-88.03 – Late Fee; Motor Vehicle Registration The $25 is the ceiling on the registration late fee itself.
Property tax is the part that keeps growing. North Carolina bundles vehicle property tax with registration renewal through “Tag & Tax Together,” so you cannot renew without paying the tax for the upcoming year.3North Carolina Department of Revenue. Frequently Asked Questions When the registration goes overdue, interest on the unpaid tax accrues at 5% for the remainder of the month the taxes are due. After a one-month interest-free window, the rate drops to three-quarters of one percent per month and keeps building until you pay.4North Carolina General Assembly. North Carolina Code 105-330.4 – Due Date, Interest, and Enforcement Remedies On a vehicle whose property tax runs into the hundreds, that interest adds up quickly.
Getting Caught Driving After Day 15
A citation for expired plates after the grace period is a Class 3 misdemeanor.2North Carolina General Assembly. North Carolina Code 20-111 – Violation of Registration Provisions The same charge applies if you display a plate you know is expired. Expect a citation and a court date.
Structured sentencing controls the outcome. With three or fewer prior convictions, the court can only impose a fine, capped at $200 for a Class 3 misdemeanor.5North Carolina General Assembly. North Carolina Code 15A-1340.23 – Punishment Limits for Each Class of Offense and Prior Conviction Level Court costs are added on top and often run higher than the fine itself. Jail time is only on the table for defendants with four or more prior convictions, where a judge can impose up to 15 days.6North Carolina General Assembly. North Carolina Code 15A-1340.23 – Punishment Limits for Each Class of Offense and Prior Conviction Level For a first-time expired-plate ticket, the realistic outcome is a fine plus court costs.
What You Need Before You Can Renew
A Passing Inspection
Every registered vehicle in North Carolina needs a passing annual safety inspection, completed within 90 days of the plate’s expiration. The station transmits results electronically to NCDMV, so you don’t carry paperwork to the renewal office.7North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles. Vehicle Emissions & Safety Inspections In 19 counties, an emissions test is bundled into the same visit.8North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles. Vehicle Emission Inspection
Active Liability Insurance
North Carolina requires continuous liability insurance under G.S. 20-309. NCDMV verifies coverage electronically with your insurer, so you don’t bring a form. If your insurer hasn’t transmitted proof, the renewal will be blocked, and a lapse means your insurance company has to submit an FS-1 certificate electronically before you can proceed.9North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles. How to Renew
Three options, all of which collect your registration and property tax in one transaction:
- Online through the myNCDMV portal at payments.ncdot.gov. You’ll need your plate number and the last five digits of your title number, both on your renewal notice. The service adds a $3 transaction fee and a 1.85% card processing fee.
- By mail, using the address printed on your renewal notice.
- In person at any NCDMV license plate agency.
Online is the fastest route when your inspection and insurance are already on file.10North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles. Renew Registration & Plates
If You Just Moved to North Carolina
The 15-day grace period is for renewals, not for new residents. If you’ve just moved, you have 60 days after establishing permanent residence to title and register your vehicle (and to get an NC driver’s license).11North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles. Moving to North Carolina Driving on out-of-state plates past that window puts you in the same position as anyone else with an unregistered vehicle on NC roads.
