The legal driving age in California is 15½ for a learner’s permit, 16 for a provisional license, and 18 for a full unrestricted license. The state uses a Graduated Driver License program, so each age unlocks a different level of driving privilege with its own training requirements and rules.
Driving at 15½ With a Permit
Fifteen and a half is the earliest a California teen can legally get behind the wheel, and only with a minor’s instruction permit.1State of California Department of Motor Vehicles. Instruction Permits Before applying, you must already be enrolled in or have completed a driver education course, and a parent or guardian has to sign the application accepting financial responsibility for your driving.2State of California Department of Motor Vehicles. At the DMV office you’ll show proof of identity, your Social Security number, and two documents proving California residency. You’ll also take a vision exam and a written knowledge test. The passing score is 80%.1State of California Department of Motor Vehicles. Instruction Permits
One detail catches many families off guard. The permit isn’t valid the moment it’s issued. It only becomes valid after a professional driving instructor signs it, which happens once you complete at least one hour of behind-the-wheel training.3State of California Department of Motor Vehicles. Once activated, all practice driving must be supervised by a California-licensed driver who is at least 25 and sitting close enough to grab the wheel if needed.2State of California Department of Motor Vehicles. Teens under 18 also have to complete two training components before moving on: 30 hours of driver education (classroom, home-study, or internet-based) and at least six hours of behind-the-wheel instruction with a licensed professional.3State of California Department of Motor Vehicles. Driving at 16 With a Provisional License
Once you turn 16 and have held your instruction permit for at least six consecutive months, you can apply for a provisional driver’s license.4State of California Department of Motor Vehicles. Section 2 – Getting an Instruction Permit and Drivers League You’ll need proof that you finished both driver education and professional behind-the-wheel training.
Before scheduling the driving test, you must log at least 50 hours of supervised practice with a California-licensed adult who is 25 or older. Ten of those hours have to be at night, and a parent or guardian certifies the total on the permit.2State of California Department of Motor Vehicles. Section 2 – Getting an Instruction Permit and Drivers License The last step is passing the behind-the-wheel driving test at a DMV office. A provisional license lets you drive without a supervising adult, but with limits for the first year.
Rules for the First 12 Months
During the first 12 months after you receive a provisional license, two restrictions apply:5California Highway Patrol. Start Smart – Provisional License Information
- No driving between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m.
- No passengers under 20 years old.
Both restrictions lift when a licensed California driver who is at least 25, a parent or guardian, or a certified driving instructor rides with you.2State of California Department of Motor Vehicles. Driving at 18 Without Restrictions
At 18, the provisional restrictions end automatically. You don’t need to visit the DMV, take any additional tests, or submit paperwork. The nighttime curfew and passenger limits simply no longer apply, and you have the same driving privileges as any other adult.7Administrative Office of the Courts. If You’re 18 or Older and Have Never Had a License
Adults starting from scratch follow a shorter path. If you’re 18 or older, you do not need to complete driver education or professional behind-the-wheel training, and there are no mandatory supervised practice hours.8State of California Department of Motor Vehicles. You still need an instruction permit first. That means visiting a DMV office with proof of identity and residency, passing the vision exam, and passing the written knowledge test at 80% or higher.8State of California Department of Motor Vehicles.
