What Is the Sales Tax in Las Vegas: Rate, Exemptions, and Use Tax

The sales tax in Las Vegas is 8.375%, and it applies to most physical goods you buy at retail inside the city.1State of Nevada Department of Taxation. Sales Tax and Use Tax On a $100 purchase, that works out to $8.38 in tax. The rate is the same everywhere in Clark County, so Henderson and North Las Vegas charge it too.

Why the Rate Is 8.375%

The number on your receipt is a stack. Nevada’s statewide floor is 6.85%, and every county starts there. Clark County adds another 1.525% in local option taxes on top, which is what pushes Las Vegas to 8.375%.2State of Nevada Department of Taxation. Components of Sales Tax Other Nevada counties pick their own local add-ons, so rates around the state run anywhere from the 6.85% minimum up to the 8.375% charged here.3Nevada Legislature. Overview of the Local Government Tax Distribution

The Clark County portion funds specific local priorities: regional transportation, flood control, the Southern Nevada Water Authority, police, and the State Education Fund. Because Nevada has no personal income tax, sales tax carries a heavy share of the funding for schools, roads, and public safety.

What You Pay Sales Tax On

Nevada taxes tangible personal property, meaning anything you can see, weigh, measure, feel, or touch. That physical-senses test comes straight from NRS 372.085.4Nevada Legislature. NRS Chapter 372 – Sales and Use Taxes Clothing, furniture, electronics, jewelry, appliances, cosmetics, and household items are all taxed at the full 8.375%.

Services on their own are not taxed. A haircut, an accountant’s fee, or a lawyer’s bill carries no Nevada sales tax. But when a service is bundled with a product, the whole charge usually gets taxed. If a furniture store assembles the piece or a jeweler engraves a ring before handing it over, the labor is folded into the taxable total.

Digital Downloads Aren’t Taxed

Products delivered electronically fall outside the tax, because they aren’t tangible. Downloaded software, e-books, streamed music, and digital magazines all come through tax-free.5State of Nevada Department of Taxation. What’s Exempt

Groceries

Food for human consumption is exempt under NRS 372.284.6Nevada Legislature. Nevada Revised Statutes 372.284 – Food for Human Consumption Bread, produce, meat, dairy, canned goods, and other unprepared items ring up with no sales tax. The exemption does not cover alcohol, pet food, vitamins or tonics, or prepared food meant to be eaten right away.

That last category is where people get surprised. A raw chicken from the meat case is exempt. A rotisserie chicken from the hot bar is taxable. Salad bars, hot soup counters, and anything sold ready-to-eat follow the same rule, which is also why restaurant meals carry the full 8.375%.

Prescriptions and Medical Supplies

Prescription medications dispensed by a licensed pharmacist are exempt, along with insulin, prosthetic devices, orthotic appliances, ostomy supplies, and hemodialysis products.7Nevada Legislature. Nevada Revised Statutes 372.283 – Prosthetic Devices, Orthotic Appliances and Certain Supports and Casts; Appliances and Supplies Relating to Ostomy; Products for Hemodialysis; Medicine; Feminine Hygiene Products The exemption turns on the prescription. Over-the-counter medicine, supplements, and cosmetic products stay taxable.

Feminine Hygiene Products

Feminine hygiene products are exempt under the same statute as prescription medicine.

Other Exempt Categories

Nevada also carves out certain farm machinery and equipment, livestock and feed, and newspapers. If you aren’t sure a specific item qualifies, the Nevada Department of Taxation publishes guidance.

Online Orders and Out-of-State Purchases

Buying from an online retailer doesn’t make the tax go away. After the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2018 decision in South Dakota v. Wayfair, Nevada requires out-of-state sellers to register and collect sales tax once they cross either $100,000 in sales into Nevada or 200 separate transactions delivered into the state, measured in the current or previous calendar year.8State of Nevada Department of Taxation. Remote Sellers – Wayfair Decision Most of the retailers you order from clear that bar easily.

Marketplaces like Amazon and eBay, along with food delivery apps such as Uber Eats, collect and remit Nevada sales tax themselves on behalf of their third-party sellers under NRS 372.752.9State of Nevada Department of Taxation. When You Owe Use Tax

If you buy a taxable item and the seller didn’t collect Nevada sales tax, you owe use tax at the same 8.375% rate.10Nevada Legislature. Nevada Revised Statutes 372.185 – Imposition and Rate This covers purchases from private parties, smaller out-of-state vendors below the Wayfair threshold, and international retailers.
