Vehicle registration in Texas is handled through your county tax assessor-collector’s office, and state law gives you 30 days from buying a vehicle or moving to Texas to get it done.1Texas Public Law. Texas Transportation Code 502.040 – Registration Required General Rule You’ll bring proof of ownership, a Form 130-U, photo ID, and proof of Texas liability insurance, then pay a base fee that starts at $50.75 for most passenger cars plus a $7.50 inspection program replacement fee and any local county fees. If your vehicle is registered in one of 17 counties, you also need a passing emissions test before the county office can process the paperwork.
The 30-Day Deadline
Transportation Code § 502.040 requires every owner of a motor vehicle, trailer, or semitrailer to apply for registration within 30 days of buying the vehicle or establishing residence in Texas.1Texas Public Law. Texas Transportation Code 502.040 – Registration Required General Rule You apply through the county tax assessor-collector where you live, though any county office willing to accept your application can process it.
New residents go through the same office but file a Texas title application at the same time as the registration, which carries a separate title fee.2Texas Department of Motor Vehicles. New to Texas
What to Bring
- Form 130-U, the Application for Texas Title and/or Registration, downloaded from TxDMV or picked up at the county office.3Texas Department of Motor Vehicles. Form 130-U – Application for Texas Title and/or Registration
- The Vehicle Identification Number and current odometer reading, both required on Form 130-U.
- Proof of ownership: the title for a first-time registration, or your previous registration receipt for a renewal.

Insurance You Must Carry
Texas will not register a vehicle without liability coverage at or above the statutory minimums under Transportation Code § 601.072:5Texas Department of Insurance. Auto Insurance Guide
- $30,000 for bodily injury or death per person
- $60,000 total for bodily injury or death per accident
- $25,000 for property damage per accident
This is commonly called 30/60/25 coverage. Your policy information lives in a state electronic verification system, and the county office checks it automatically. A lapsed or underinsured policy will stop your registration until you fix it.

Where and How to File
In Person
Walk into your county tax assessor-collector office with your documents and payment. Processing usually takes a few minutes and you leave with the sticker.11Texas Department of Motor Vehicles. Receiving In-Person Motor Vehicle Services First-time registrations, title work, and anything out of the ordinary are easier handled this way.
Online
Renewals go through the Texas by Texas (TxT) portal and mobile app. You can renew as early as 90 days before expiration or up to 12 months after, as long as you haven’t been cited for driving on expired registration.4TxDMV.gov. Register Your Vehicle After payment, there’s a two-business-day processing hold, and TxDMV says to allow up to three weeks for the sticker to arrive by mail.
By Mail
You can mail your renewal to the county tax office. Allow at least two weeks for processing and return mailing.11Texas Department of Motor Vehicles. Receiving In-Person Motor Vehicle Services
Renewal, Grace Period, and Late Penalty
Registration expires at the end of the month shown on your sticker. Texas gives you a five-working-day grace period after that date, during which law enforcement generally won’t ticket you solely for expired registration. After those five days, driving on expired tags is a traffic violation under Transportation Code § 502.407 and carries a fine of up to $200.4TxDMV.gov. Register Your Vehicle
Your registration month doesn’t shift when you renew late, so waiting past the deadline shortens the next cycle rather than extending it.
If You Sell the Vehicle
When you sell or give away a vehicle, file a Motor Vehicle Transfer Notification (Form VTR-346) with TxDMV within 30 days of the sale.12TxDMV.gov. Texas Motor Vehicle Transfer Notification Form VTR-346 The form does not transfer the title; it flags your record to show the vehicle is no longer in your possession. If the buyer runs up toll violations or gets into a crash before transferring the title into their name, that filing is what keeps the problem from landing on you first.
