What Senior Check Benefits Are Available in Boise, Idaho?

If you’re 65 or older and living in Boise, several programs can meaningfully lower what you pay for housing, food, heat, and healthcare. The senior benefits available in Boise, Idaho include the state’s Property Tax Reduction program (worth up to $1,500 off your property tax bill), the homeowner’s exemption, Idaho’s food tax credit, SNAP, LIHEAP heating assistance, Medicare Savings Programs, and a federal tax credit for people 65 and older. Most are income-tested, each has its own filing window, and they stack.

Property Tax Reduction (The Circuit Breaker)

Idaho’s Property Tax Reduction program, often called the Circuit Breaker, is the single largest benefit most Boise seniors can claim. It lowers the property taxes owed on your primary residence by up to $1,500 if your total household income is $15,750 or less. The reduction shrinks as income rises and disappears entirely once household income passes $39,130; at the top of the eligibility range, the minimum benefit is $250.1Idaho State Tax Commission. 2026 Property Tax Reduction Income Brackets

You qualify if, as of January 1 of the application year, you meet at least one of these conditions:

  • Age 65 or older
  • Widowed
  • Blind
  • Disabled, as recognized by the Social Security Administration, Railroad Retirement Board, Veterans Affairs, Federal Civil Service, or a public employment retirement system2Ada County Assessor. Property Tax Reduction Program

One easy mistake: the January 1 rule means you can’t apply during the calendar year you turn 65. You have to already be 65 on January 1, so most people first qualify the year after their 65th birthday.

“Household income” is defined broadly. It covers your federal adjusted gross income plus items that don’t normally appear on a tax return, including nontaxable Social Security, pension and annuity payments, nontaxable interest, workers’ compensation, and loss-of-earnings insurance.3Idaho State Legislature. Idaho Code 63-701 – Definitions A spouse’s income counts regardless of whose name is on the deed.

Applications go to the Ada County Assessor’s office between January 1 and April 15 each year. You can file in person at 190 E. Front Street, Suite 107, Boise, or mail, fax, or email the form.2Ada County Assessor. The form is available on the Ada County Assessor’s tax relief forms page.4Ada County Assessor. Ada County Assessor – Tax Relief Forms You have to reapply every year.

Homeowner’s Exemption

Separate from the Circuit Breaker, Idaho’s homeowner’s exemption shields 50 percent of your home’s assessed value, up to $125,000, from property taxation. It isn’t a senior program; any owner-occupant qualifies, there’s no income test, and once the Ada County Assessor approves it, it stays in place until you sell or move.5Idaho State Tax Commission. Many Boise homeowners already have the exemption from when they bought the house. If you’ve never applied, call the Assessor’s office. The homeowner’s exemption and the Circuit Breaker stack, so you get both.

Idaho Food Tax Credit

Idaho taxes groceries and refunds part of the cost through a food tax credit. The credit is $155 per person, or up to $250 if you’ve kept grocery receipts documenting the actual sales tax you paid.6Idaho State Tax Commission. Idaho Food Tax Credit You must have been an Idaho resident for the entire tax year.

If you file an Idaho income tax return, the credit is built into it. If your income is low enough that you aren’t required to file, you can still claim the money using Idaho Form 24, mailed to the Tax Commission at PO Box 56, Boise, ID 83756-0056.7Idaho State Tax Commission. SNAP

SNAP loads monthly food funds onto a card you use at the grocery store. There’s no upper age limit, and seniors 60 and older are generally exempt from SNAP’s work requirements under federal rules.

Income limits for 2026 are $1,696 per month gross for a one-person household and $2,292 for two people. Countable resources (cash, bank accounts, stocks) must stay under $5,000.8Idaho Department of Health and Welfare. LIHEAP and Weatherization

The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) pays a one-time heating or cooling benefit directly to your utility company. In Ada County, El-Ada Community Action Partnership runs intake and determines eligibility, and the agency offers outreach for disabled and elderly clients who can’t travel to an office.9El-Ada Community Action Partnership. Households with an elderly or disabled member can apply starting in October, a month before the general opening in November.10Idaho Department of Health and Welfare. About Heating Assistance The monthly income limit for a single-person household is roughly $2,736 and scales up with household size. Apply early. Funding is limited and goes first-come, first-served, and it often runs out before the heating season ends.

The Weatherization Assistance Program is a longer-term companion. If you qualify, crews insulate, seal, and upgrade heating equipment at no cost, which lowers bills for years afterward.10Idaho Department of Health and Welfare. Medicare Savings Programs

Medicare Savings Programs cover some or all of your Medicare out-of-pocket costs based on income. Two of them matter most for Boise seniors:

  • Qualified Medicare Beneficiary (QMB): pays Part A and Part B premiums plus deductibles, coinsurance, and copays for Medicare-covered services. For 2026, income limits are $1,350 per month for individuals and $1,824 for married couples.11Medicare.gov. Medicare Savings Programs

A COLA bump can occasionally push you over the line.

Several of these benefits (the food tax credit, the federal elderly credit, Form 24 refunds) require filing something with the IRS or the Idaho Tax Commission.
