What States Recognize Kentucky Concealed Carry?

A Kentucky Concealed Deadly Weapon (CCDW) license is recognized in roughly 37 other states, giving you broad travel coverage across the South, Midwest, and Mountain West. Several states honor it only if you are a current Kentucky resident, and about ten states plus the District of Columbia will not honor it at all. The states that currently recognize Kentucky concealed carry are listed below, followed by the ones you need to avoid or pass through carefully.

States That Recognize a Kentucky CCDW License

The following states generally honor a valid Kentucky CCDW license. States marked “resident permits only” will recognize your license only if you are currently a Kentucky resident; if you kept the license after moving out of state, those states treat it as invalid.

  • Alabama
  • Alaska
  • Arizona
  • Arkansas
  • Colorado (resident permits only)
  • Delaware
  • Florida (resident permits only)
  • Georgia
  • Idaho
  • Indiana
  • Iowa
  • Kansas
  • Louisiana
  • Maine
  • Michigan (resident permits only)
  • Minnesota
  • Mississippi
  • Missouri
  • Montana
  • Nebraska
  • Nevada
  • New Hampshire
  • North Carolina
  • North Dakota
  • Ohio
  • Oklahoma
  • Pennsylvania (resident permits only)
  • South Carolina (resident permits only)
  • South Dakota
  • Tennessee
  • Texas
  • Utah
  • Vermont
  • Virginia
  • West Virginia
  • Wisconsin
  • Wyoming

Reciprocity is not permanent. Kentucky law directs the Kentucky State Police to enter agreements with states that recognize the Kentucky CCDW license or allow Kentucky residents to carry on the strength of it, and those agreements can be added or dropped through legislation or executive action at any time.1Kentucky Legislative Research Commission. Resident vs Non-Resident Permits

Some states draw a sharp line between resident and non-resident permits. Colorado, Florida, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and South Carolina honor Kentucky’s CCDW license only when the holder is actually a Kentucky resident. If you moved out of Kentucky but held onto the license, your permit is treated as a non-resident credential in those states and will not cover you. Check the residency rule for every destination state if your situation has changed.

States That Do Not Recognize Any Kentucky Permit

At least ten states and the District of Columbia honor no out-of-state concealed carry permit, period. Your Kentucky CCDW license is not valid in:

  • California
  • Connecticut
  • Hawaii
  • Illinois
  • Maryland
  • Massachusetts
  • New Jersey
  • New York
  • Oregon
  • Washington
  • District of Columbia

Carrying concealed in any of these jurisdictions on the strength of your Kentucky license is a crime. Penalties vary, but unlicensed concealed carry can be a felony carrying multiple years in prison and thousands of dollars in fines. Not knowing your permit was invalid is not a defense. If your trip takes you into one of these states, leave the firearm behind or follow the federal transport rules below.

Driving Through a State That Won’t Honor Your Permit

Federal law provides a narrow safe passage protection for interstate transport. Under 18 USC 926A, you may transport a firearm from any place where you can lawfully possess it to any other place where you can lawfully possess it, provided the firearm is unloaded and neither the firearm nor the ammunition is readily accessible from the passenger compartment. In a vehicle with a trunk, the firearm goes in the trunk. In a vehicle without a separate trunk, it must be in a locked container that is not the glove compartment or center console.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 18 USC 926A – Interstate Transportation of Firearms

Safe passage covers transit only. Stop overnight, go sightseeing, or stray far off your route in a non-recognition state, and you are no longer “transporting” within the meaning of the statute. Treat these states as pass-through zones, not destinations.

What Recognition Does and Doesn’t Cover

Having your Kentucky license recognized in another state means that state treats you as a lawful concealed carrier. It does not mean Kentucky’s rules follow you across the border. The destination state’s rules on where you can carry, how you must behave around police, and what you can carry all apply. The traps below cause most of the trouble.

Duty to Inform Officers

About a dozen states and DC require you to immediately tell any law enforcement officer during an official contact that you are armed, even on a routine traffic stop. Another dozen or so require disclosure only if the officer asks. The rest impose no duty to inform. Getting this wrong in a “must inform” state is a separate criminal charge. Look up the rule for each state on your route.

Prohibited Locations

Every state bars concealed carry in certain places, and the lists differ. Common restrictions cover schools, courthouses, government buildings, airports past security, and establishments that primarily serve alcohol. Some states add houses of worship, hospitals, polling places, or public parks. In Kentucky, colleges, universities, and government-owned or government-occupied buildings can prohibit concealed carry, and restricted areas must be posted at the entrance.3Kentucky Legislative Research Commission. Kentucky Code 237.115 – Construction of KRS 237.110 Another state’s list may look nothing like Kentucky’s. Carrying in a prohibited location is its own offense even if your permit is otherwise valid.

Age Requirements

Kentucky issues CCDW licenses to applicants 21 and older.4Justia Law. Kentucky Revised Statutes 237.109 – Authorization to Carry Concealed Deadly Weapons Without a License Several destination states apply their own minimum age to out-of-state permit holders, and the thresholds vary. Florida, for example, requires out-of-state visitors to be at least 21, with an exception for active military members and honorably discharged veterans who are at least 18. If you are under 21, verify each state’s rule before relying on your permit there.

Firearm and Ammunition Limits

Some states cap magazine capacity, restrict certain ammunition, or limit the type of firearm you can carry concealed. A handgun and magazine that are legal in Kentucky may put you over the limit in a state that caps magazines at 10 or 15 rounds. Confirm that your specific firearm and loaded magazines comply with the destination state’s laws before you cross the state line.

Confirm Reciprocity Before Every Trip

State legislatures change concealed carry laws regularly, and reciprocity lists shift with them. The Kentucky State Police CCDW page maintains current reciprocity information and is the most reliable starting point.5Kentucky State Police. Verify within a few days of your trip; a list you looked at months ago may already be out of date.
