Almost every major supermarket in California accepts CalFresh, along with most grocery stores, many convenience stores, a growing list of online retailers, and hundreds of farmers’ markets. The stores that accept CalFresh are the ones authorized by the USDA to take SNAP benefits, and they typically display an EBT or SNAP logo at the entrance or register.1California Department of Social Services. EBT Card Your Golden State Advantage card works like a debit card at any of them.
If you want to confirm a specific store before you go, the USDA’s SNAP Retailer Locator at fns.usda.gov/snap/retailer-locator lets you enter a street address or ZIP code and returns every authorized retailer nearby, from full supermarkets to corner markets.2Food and Nutrition Service. Supermarket Chains That Accept CalFresh
You can use your EBT card at essentially every major California grocery chain. That includes Walmart, Target, Safeway, Vons, Ralphs, Food 4 Less, Albertsons, Stater Bros., Grocery Outlet, Smart and Final, Trader Joe’s, WinCo Foods, and Costco. Smaller regional chains and independent neighborhood grocers accept EBT widely as well.3California Department of Social Services. CalFresh – California’s Food Assistance Program
When you’re not sure about a particular store, look for the EBT or SNAP decal near the door or at checkout, or ask a cashier. Gas stations and some dollar stores do not always qualify, so the Retailer Locator is worth checking if you’re relying on one.
Buying Groceries Online With CalFresh
Several large platforms accept EBT for online grocery orders. Amazon and Walmart both take it for delivery. Instacart accepts EBT across a wide network of partner stores including Albertsons, ALDI, Costco, FoodMaxx, Lucky Supermarkets, Save Mart, and Sprouts Farmers Market.4Instacart. One thing to know before you check out: CalFresh pays only for the food itself. Delivery fees, service charges, driver tips, and bottle deposits have to come off a separate debit or credit card.5California Department of Social Services. The participating retailer list keeps growing. The USDA publishes a current state-by-state list at fns.usda.gov/snap/online.
Farmers’ Markets and the Market Match Bonus
Many California farmers’ markets accept EBT, and shopping at a participating one effectively doubles your money on fresh produce.3California Department of Social Services. CalFresh – California’s Food Assistance Program Through the state’s Market Match program, every CalFresh dollar you spend is matched with another dollar for fruits and vegetables. Most markets cap the match at $15 per visit, though some go higher.6Market Match. Market Match – Making Fresh Affordable
Market Match operates at over 270 sites statewide through more than 50 community organizations and market operators. Spending $15 can bring home $30 of produce. Restaurants: The CalFresh Restaurant Meals Program
Hot prepared food is normally not something you can buy with CalFresh. California’s Restaurant Meals Program is the exception. It lets qualifying recipients buy prepared meals at approved restaurants, and as of 2021 it operates in all 58 counties.7California Department of Social Services. The CalFresh Restaurant Meals Program
Eligibility is narrow. Every member of your CalFresh household must be at least 60 years old, have a disability, be experiencing homelessness, or be the spouse of someone in one of those groups. A spouse qualifies through the other person and does not need to independently meet the age or disability criteria. If even one household member falls outside those categories, the household cannot use RMP.7California Department of Social Services. The CalFresh Restaurant Meals Program Participating restaurants post a “CalFresh RMP” sign in the window.
Using Your EBT Card Outside California
The Golden State Advantage card works at any authorized SNAP retailer in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Guam.1California Department of Social Services. EBT Card You don’t need any special arrangement to shop while traveling or visiting family in another state.
What the card won’t do is move with you if you relocate. CalFresh is a California program and requires California residency, so a permanent move means closing your CalFresh case and applying for SNAP in the new state. Extended out-of-state use may prompt your county office to verify you still live in California.
Items the Card Won’t Cover Anywhere
Even at an authorized store, several categories are off the table: alcohol, tobacco, vitamins and supplements (anything labeled “Supplement Facts” rather than “Nutrition Facts”), cannabis and CBD products, hot prepared foods outside the Restaurant Meals Program, non-food items like cleaning supplies and pet food, and live animals other than shellfish.8Food and Nutrition Service.
