In unincorporated Hillsborough County, Florida, you can buy beer from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 a.m. the next morning Monday through Saturday, and from 11:00 a.m. Sunday to 3:00 a.m. Monday. If you’re inside Tampa, Temple Terrace, or Plant City, the hours are set by the city, not the county, and they’re not always the same.
Hours in Unincorporated Hillsborough County
The county’s alcohol sales schedule is set in Appendix Chapter 4 of the Hillsborough County Code of Ordinances:
- Monday through Saturday: 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 a.m. the following day.
- Sunday: 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 a.m. Monday.
The same window covers every licensed seller in unincorporated parts of the county. Grocery stores, convenience stores, package stores, bars, and restaurants all operate on this schedule; the ordinance doesn’t split hours between to-go sales and on-site drinking. If you walk into a gas station at 6:30 a.m. on a Tuesday with a six-pack, the register won’t ring it up for another thirty minutes.
The ordinance also bars licensed establishments from letting customers keep drinking on the premises after the cutoff, even from drinks already purchased. A bar that stops serving at 3:00 a.m. has to clear the glasses too.
Tampa, Temple Terrace, and Plant City Set Their Own Hours
Hillsborough County contains three incorporated cities, and the county ordinance does not apply inside their limits. People often use “Hillsborough County” loosely to mean the whole Tampa Bay area, but the county’s rules only govern unincorporated land.
Tampa’s city council removed its Sunday morning restriction in late 2021. Beer, wine, and liquor can be sold starting at 7:00 a.m. every day of the week, with no later Sunday start. Plant City moved its Sunday opening from 1:00 p.m. to 11:00 a.m., which lines up with the unincorporated county’s Sunday schedule. Temple Terrace keeps its own schedule as well.
The practical effect shows up most on Sunday mornings. A store just inside Tampa city limits can sell you a six-pack at 7:00 a.m. A store a few blocks away in unincorporated territory can’t sell it to you until 11:00 a.m.
How to Confirm the Rule Where You’re Buying
If you’re in an unincorporated part of the county, Appendix Chapter 4 of the Hillsborough County Code of Ordinances is the controlling document, and it’s published in the county’s online code library. If you’re inside Tampa, Temple Terrace, or Plant City, the county code won’t give you the right answer; check the municipal code for the city you’re actually in. Tampa publishes its city code through its own online portal, and the city clerk’s office can point you to the current alcohol ordinance if the online version is unclear.
Local ordinances do get amended, and Sunday hours in particular have shifted in recent years. If you’re planning around an early-morning or late-night purchase and the timing is tight, confirm against the current code for your specific address rather than assuming the regional rule carries over.
