What Time Do They Start Selling Beer in North Carolina?

In North Carolina, stores and bars can start selling beer at 7:00 AM Monday through Saturday. On Sunday, sales begin at either 10:00 AM or 12:00 noon, depending on whether the city or county has adopted a local “Brunch Bill” ordinance.

Monday Through Saturday

The state prohibits beer sales between 2:00 AM and 7:00 AM every day. That leaves a 19-hour window running from 7:00 AM until 2:00 AM the following morning, and it applies the same way across the state. Grocery stores, convenience stores, gas stations, bars, and restaurants all operate on that clock, regardless of county or city.

Sunday

Sunday is the day where location matters. There are two possible start times, both ending at the same 2:00 AM cutoff.

Where the Brunch Bill Applies: 10:00 AM

In cities and counties that have passed a Brunch Bill ordinance, permitted establishments can begin selling beer at 10:00 AM on Sunday. The Brunch Bill, signed into law in 2017, gave local governments the option to allow beer, wine, and mixed beverage sales starting at 10:00 AM instead of noon. Many larger cities and tourist areas adopted the ordinance quickly, but adoption is not universal.

Everywhere Else: 12:00 Noon

If your city or county has not adopted a Brunch Bill ordinance, the default rule still applies and sales cannot begin before 12:00 PM on Sunday. There is no always-current statewide list of which jurisdictions have opted in, so when you are unsure, calling the store or checking with the local government is the most reliable way to confirm.

Earlier Start at Large Venues

Certain large sporting and entertainment venues can begin Sunday alcohol sales one hour earlier than the standard time, but only during events and only if the permittee meets specific qualification requirements under G.S. 18B-1009. In a jurisdiction where the Brunch Bill is in effect, a qualifying venue can pour at 9:00 AM. Where the noon default still applies, it can begin at 11:00 AM.

Liquor Is a Different System

If you are looking for liquor instead of beer, none of the above applies. Liquor in North Carolina is sold only through ABC stores, which are run by independent local boards. ABC stores cannot open before 9:00 AM or stay open past 9:00 PM, and they are closed every Sunday, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. Individual local boards set their own hours within those limits.

Beer and wine, on the other hand, are sold through private retailers under permits issued by the North Carolina ABC Commission. You do not need to go to an ABC store for beer, and the hours above cover every private retailer equally.
