To renew your Illinois driver’s license, bring one document that proves your written signature — your current Illinois license is enough on its own. That’s the whole requirement for a straightforward standard renewal. Everything else on the checklist depends on what you’re changing (address, name) or whether you’re upgrading to a REAL ID.
Standard Renewal: One Document
The Secretary of State requires one document from “Group A,” which proves your written signature.1Illinois Secretary of State. Document Requirements to Obtain a Drivers License or State ID Card Your current Illinois driver’s license satisfies that by itself. If you don’t have it on you, other Group A options include a major credit card or debit card, a U.S. passport, a Social Security card, or a military ID.2Illinois Secretary of State. Document Requirements to Obtain a Drivers License or State ID Card
That’s it. The underlying application statute asks for your legal name, date of birth, sex, residence address, and Social Security number, but all of that is already on file from the license you’re renewing.3Illinois General Assembly. Illinois Code 625 ILCS 5/6-106 – Application for License or Instruction Permit Some guides describe four document groups (signature, date of birth, Social Security number, residency), but that fuller checklist is for first-time Illinois applicants. If you show up for a renewal with a stack of birth certificates and W-2s, you won’t be turned away, but you didn’t need to gather any of it.
Add One Document If You’re Changing Your Address
If your address has changed since your last license was issued, bring one document from “Group D” (residency) in addition to your signature proof. A utility bill, bank statement, lease, insurance policy, or official government mail works, as long as it shows your name and current Illinois address and is dated within 90 days.1Illinois Secretary of State. Add Proof If Your Name Has Changed
If your name, date of birth, Social Security number, or gender has changed since your last license was issued, bring a document linking the old information to the new. For a name change, that usually means a certified marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order.2Illinois Secretary of State. Document Requirements to Obtain a Drivers License or State ID Card The Secretary of State won’t update the record without that paper trail, so don’t assume a new name will carry over automatically from another agency.
REAL ID Upgrade: Three Groups of Documents
If you want the gold-star REAL ID version of your license at renewal, the checklist is longer. You need documents from three separate groups, and each one must be an original or certified copy. Photocopies and printouts of scanned images are generally not accepted.4Illinois Secretary of State. REAL ID Document Checklist
Group 1 — identity, date of birth, and lawful status. One document. A certified birth certificate filed with a state vital statistics office, a valid U.S. passport or passport card, a Certificate of Naturalization (Form N-550 or N-570), or a Permanent Resident Card (Form I-551) will each do the job.
Group 2 — Social Security number. One document, such as your Social Security card, a W-2 showing your full SSN, or a pay stub displaying your name and full SSN. This group is only required if you haven’t previously provided SSN documentation to the Secretary of State.
Group 3 — residency. Two documents proving your Illinois address. A bank statement dated within 90 days, a mortgage or lease agreement, a pay stub, an insurance policy, a utility bill, or official government mail with your name and current address all qualify.
The bar is higher here because the REAL ID Act requires states to verify these documents through federal databases.5Department of Homeland Security. REAL ID Act
If You’re Not a U.S. Citizen
Non-citizen applicants substitute different documents in Groups 1 and 2. For a REAL ID, a Permanent Resident Card, Employment Authorization Document, or a foreign passport with a valid U.S. visa and approved Form I-94 satisfies the Group 1 identity requirement.4Illinois Secretary of State. REAL ID Document Checklist For a standard license, applicants without a Social Security number who hold Department of Homeland Security documentation authorizing their presence must bring that documentation. Applicants without DHS authorization must provide proof of Illinois residency exceeding one year along with a valid passport or consular identification document from their country of citizenship.3Illinois General Assembly. If You’re Renewing Online, You Don’t Bring Anything
Eligible drivers can renew through the Safe Driver Renewal program by internet, mail, or phone and skip the facility entirely. The Secretary of State mails a renewal notice with an authorization code; you enter that code on the online portal and pay by credit card, debit card, or e-check. The renewed license is mailed to the address on file.
You qualify only if all of the following are true:7Illinois General Assembly. Illinois Administrative Code 92-1030-250R – Safe Driver License Renewals and Remote Renewals
- You’re between 21 and 78 years old.
- You have no traffic convictions, court supervision dispositions, or accidents on your driving record. A single speeding ticket on court supervision disqualifies you.
- Your last two renewals weren’t both completed remotely. Illinois requires an in-person visit at least every other cycle.
- Your license hasn’t been expired more than one year, and you don’t hold a commercial driver’s license or school bus permit.
- You have no outstanding medical or vision specialist reports, no sex offender reporting requirements, and no unverified Social Security number.
Online renewal also doesn’t produce a REAL ID. If you want the gold star, you have to appear in person with the Group 1, 2, and 3 documents described above. Confirm your mailing address before you submit, because the card goes to whatever’s on file.
What Happens When You Get to the Facility
After document check-in, you’ll go through a vision screening. Illinois requires binocular visual acuity of at least 20/40 and a peripheral field of at least 140 degrees. Bring your corrective lenses if you wear them; if you can’t pass without them, your license will carry a corrective-lens restriction. Drivers with acuity between 20/41 and 20/70 can still qualify but receive a daylight-only driving restriction.
A new photo is taken on-site. Illinois no longer issues permanent cards at the facility. You leave with a temporary paper license valid for 90 days while fraud checks run, and the permanent card is mailed to your address, typically within 15 business days. A written knowledge test may be required; Illinois generally administers one every eight years, and drivers who renewed remotely last cycle may be due. You’ll also be asked whether you want to register as an organ and tissue donor under the Illinois Uniform Anatomical Gift Act.8Illinois General Assembly. Illinois Compiled Statutes 755 ILCS 50/5-20 – Manner of Executing Anatomical Gifts
One boundary worth knowing: drivers 75 and older can’t use Safe Driver Renewal and must appear in person every time, and depending on age may face a road test as part of the renewal.9FindLaw. Illinois Statutes Chapter 625 Vehicles 5/6-115 If that’s you, call the Secretary of State’s office before your visit to confirm what the current requirements are.
