For a Texas driver’s license, bring documents proving four things: your identity, U.S. citizenship or lawful presence, your Social Security number, and Texas residency (two separate documents for that last one). Depending on your situation, you may also need a driver education certificate, vehicle registration and insurance, or discharge paperwork for a veteran designation. Knowing what to bring to the Texas DMV for a driver’s license before you book your appointment is the single best way to avoid a wasted trip, since DPS offices operate by appointment only.1Department of Public Safety. One note on REAL ID. Since May 7, 2025, TSA has only accepted REAL ID-compliant licenses for domestic flights and entry to federal buildings; a compliant Texas card shows a gold star in the upper portion.3Transportation Security Administration. TSA Publishes Final Rule on REAL ID Enforcement Beginning May 7, 2025 There is no separate REAL ID application in Texas. The documents listed below satisfy both the state’s rules and the federal REAL ID standards, so bringing everything here gets you a compliant card.4Transportation Security Administration. Proof of Identity
DPS uses a tiered system. You need either one primary identity document, two secondary documents, or one secondary plus two supporting documents.5Texas Department of Public Safety. Identification Requirements
Primary documents are the simplest route:
- An unexpired U.S. passport or passport card
- An original or certified U.S. birth certificate from a state, territory, or the District of Columbia
- A U.S. Certificate of Naturalization or Citizenship (Form N-550, N-560, N-561, N-570, or N-578)
Secondary options include an original or certified copy of a U.S. state birth certificate or a U.S. citizen identification card (Form I-179 or I-197).6Department of Public Safety. U.S. Citizenship or Lawful Presence Requirement Supporting documents, used to round out a secondary, include a Social Security card, a W-2 or 1099, and school records such as report cards or photo ID cards.5Texas Department of Public Safety. Identification Requirements
Every document must be an original or certified copy. Laminated birth certificates and photocopies are rejected.6Department of Public Safety. U.S. Citizenship or Lawful Presence Requirement Your full name and date of birth have to match across everything you present. If your name changed through marriage, divorce, or court order, bring the original or certified marriage license, divorce decree, or court order showing the change.5Texas Department of Public Safety. Identification Requirements Any document in a language other than English needs a certified translation.
Proof of U.S. Citizenship or Lawful Presence
For U.S. citizens, the primary identity documents listed above already satisfy this requirement. A Consular Report of Birth Abroad (Form FS-240) also works.6Department of Public Safety. U.S. Citizenship or Lawful Presence Requirement
Non-citizens can bring one of the following:
- An unexpired Permanent Resident Card (Form I-551)
- An unexpired foreign passport with a valid I-94 (the visa itself may be expired in some cases)
- An unexpired Employment Authorization Document (Form I-766)
- A machine-readable immigrant visa with temporary I-551 language and an ADIT stamp
Non-citizen documents must be unexpired unless noted. DPS verifies your status with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security before issuing the license, and the application cannot be completed until that verification comes back.6Department of Public Safety. Proof of Your Social Security Number
You must provide your full Social Security number, which DPS verifies electronically with the Social Security Administration. If verification fails, the application can’t be processed.7Texas Department of Public Safety. DL-57 Document Requirements Any of these work:
- Your Social Security card
- A W-2 or 1099 form
- A pay stub showing your full SSN
If you’ve never been issued an SSN, you’ll sign a declaration at the office affirming that.7Texas Department of Public Safety. DL-57 Document Requirements Lost your card? Replacements from SSA arrive by mail in 5 to 10 business days,8Social Security Administration. Replace Social Security Card so if that’s your only SSN proof, order it well before your appointment. Otherwise a W-2, 1099, or qualifying pay stub covers you.
Two Documents Proving Texas Residency
You need two separate documents showing your current Texas residential address, and most must be dated within 180 days of your application.9Department of Public Safety. Texas Residency Requirement for Driver Licenses and ID Cards Common options:
- Utility or service bills (electric, water, gas, internet, cable, streaming services, lawn service, cell phone)
- Bank, credit card, or investment statements
- Mail from a federal, state, county, or city government agency
- A pre-printed paycheck or pay stub with your name and address
- A current deed, mortgage statement, or residential lease
- A valid Texas vehicle registration or title
- A current homeowner’s or renter’s insurance policy, statement, or card
- A Texas voter registration card or Selective Service card
P.O. Box addresses are not accepted. The names on both residency documents have to match the name on your application, so if yours has changed, bring the legal documentation covered under identity above.9Department of Public Safety. Texas Residency Requirement for Driver Licenses and ID Cards
Extra Items if You’re a New Texas Resident
If you’re surrendering an out-of-state license, DPS wants more than the core four. You must show current Texas vehicle registration for every vehicle you own, plus proof of insurance for each. Don’t own a vehicle? You’ll sign a statement confirming that.10Department of Public Safety. Apply for a Texas Driver License Register your vehicles with the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles before your DPS appointment so the paperwork is in hand when you arrive.
If you’re 18 or older with a valid, unexpired out-of-state license, you’re exempt from the six-hour adult driver education course that first-time Texas applicants in that age range have to complete.10Department of Public Safety. Apply for a Texas Driver License
Extra Items for First-Time Drivers
Beyond the core four, what you bring depends on your age. This is the part people most often get wrong.
Under 18
Teens need a Texas Driver Education Certificate showing classroom completion. The form varies by provider: DE-964 or DEE-964 for certified driving schools and parent-taught programs, DE-964E for public school driver education. A parent or legal guardian either appears in person to provide consent or signs and notarizes the application in advance. Emancipated minors can bring evidence of emancipation instead.11Department of Public Safety. Texas Learners License as a Teen For the driving skills test, bring the Impact Texas Teen Drivers (ITTD) certificate from the two-hour video course.12Department of Public Safety. Impact Texas Drivers (ITD) Program
Ages 18 to 24
First-time applicants in this range must complete the six-hour adult driver education course and bring the certificate.10Department of Public Safety. Apply for a Texas Driver License You’ll also need the Impact Texas Adult Drivers (ITAD) one-hour video certificate for the skills test.12Department of Public Safety. Impact Texas Drivers (ITD) Program
25 and Older
No driver education course is required, but the one-hour ITAD video and its certificate still apply before the skills test.12Department of Public Safety. Impact Texas Drivers (ITD) Program The ITD certificate must be dated within 90 days of the driving test.10Department of Public Safety. Apply for a Texas Driver License
If You’re Taking the Driving Skills Test
Bring proof of registration and current liability insurance for the vehicle you’ll drive. It has to be registered, insured, and safe to drive, or the examiner won’t let you test.
If You’re a Veteran Adding the Designation
Veterans with an honorable or general (under honorable conditions) discharge can add a veteran designation to a new or renewed license at no extra charge. Bring one of the following:13Department of Public Safety. Driver License and Identification Services for Veterans
- DD-214 or DD-215
- NGB-22 (National Guard)
- A U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs proof of service card or disability letter
- A Veterans Identification Card (VIC)
- A Texas License to Carry with the veteran designator
Adding the designation to an existing license without renewing triggers a duplicate license fee.13Department of Public Safety. Driver License and Identification Services for Veterans

What DPS Handles at the Office
A few things you don’t need to prepare. DPS has you complete the application on-site, takes your thumbprints and signature, and takes your photo. If thumbprints can’t be captured, DPS uses index fingerprints instead.14State of Texas.
