What to Do After Getting Married in Vegas: Insurance & Name Change

After getting married in Vegas, the first thing to do is order certified copies of your marriage certificate from the Clark County Clerk, because nearly every step that follows — insurance enrollment, tax withholding, name changes, beneficiary updates — depends on having that document in hand. Your Nevada marriage is legally binding the moment your officiant signs the certificate, and every other state is required to recognize it, so there’s no need to re-register the marriage when you get home. The work ahead is administrative, and some of it runs on tight clocks.

Order Certified Copies of Your Marriage Certificate

Your officiant has ten calendar days after the ceremony to deliver the completed certificate to the Clark County Clerk’s Office for filing.1Clark County, NV. Frequently Asked Questions Once it’s filed, you can request certified copies in person at 200 Lewis Avenue in Las Vegas, by mail, or through the Clerk’s online ordering system. Each certified copy costs $20.2Clark County, NV. Fees

Order at least two or three. The Social Security Administration, the DMV, and the passport agency each want to see an original or certified copy, and photocopies are not accepted. When you place the order, provide both spouses’ full legal names as they appeared at the time of the marriage and the date of the ceremony. Mail orders typically take a few weeks to arrive, so if you’re still in town the day after the wedding, picking copies up in person is the fastest route.

Insurance Deadlines Come First

Marriage is a qualifying life event that opens a special enrollment period for health coverage, but the window is shorter than most people realize and the clock starts on your wedding date. Missing it means waiting until the next open enrollment, which could be months out.

Employer-Sponsored Health Plans: 30 Days

Federal law gives you 30 days from the date of your marriage to request enrollment changes on an employer-sponsored plan.3U.S. Department of Labor. Life Changes Require Health Choices Contact your HR department your first day back. If both of you have employer coverage, compare the two plans before deciding whose to use; one may offer better rates or coverage for a couple.

Marketplace Plans: 60 Days

If either spouse has a Marketplace plan, the special enrollment window is 60 days.4Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. Understanding Special Enrollment Periods Generally, at least one spouse must have had qualifying health coverage for at least one day during the 60 days before the marriage for this special enrollment to apply. You can use the window to add your spouse, switch plans, or drop Marketplace coverage if you’re joining an employer plan instead.5HealthCare.gov. Auto and Property Insurance

Auto insurance doesn’t have the same hard deadline, but notify your insurer of your new marital status, any address change, and any additional drivers. Many insurers offer lower rates for married couples and multi-car discounts worth real money. If you’re combining households, review renters or homeowners coverage at the same time.

Update Your Tax Withholding

The IRS expects newly married employees to give their employer an updated Form W-4 within 10 days of the wedding.6Internal Revenue Service. Tax To-Dos for Newlyweds to Keep in Mind If both spouses work, your combined income may change which bracket you’re in and how much should come out of each paycheck. The IRS Tax Withholding Estimator at irs.gov takes about 15 minutes and tells you exactly how to fill out the new W-4s.

Your filing status for the entire tax year depends on whether you’re married on December 31. A December 30 Vegas wedding means you file as married for that full year. You’ll choose between married filing jointly and married filing separately. Filing jointly usually produces the lower total tax bill — for 2026, the standard deduction for married couples filing jointly is $32,200, compared to $16,100 for a single filer.7Internal Revenue Service. Change Your Name (If You’re Choosing To)

A name change after marriage is optional. If you want one, the order matters, because each agency verifies your name against the previous one’s records. Skipping ahead creates delays.

Social Security First

Start with the SSA. Every other government agency checks your name electronically against Social Security records, so nothing else moves until this is done. You may be able to request the change online through a my Social Security account.9Social Security Administration. Change Name with Social Security Otherwise, complete paper Form SS-5 and submit it with your certified marriage certificate and a current photo ID.10Social Security Administration. Application for a Social Security Card The SSA requires originals or copies certified by the issuing agency, and will return your documents after processing.

Driver’s License

Wait at least two business days after the SSA update before visiting the DMV, because the DMV verifies your name electronically against Social Security records.11Clark County, NV. Changing Your Name Nevada residents should bring their current license, certified marriage certificate, updated Social Security card, and two documents proving a Nevada address.12Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles. Name Changes The marriage certificate — not the Social Security card — is treated as proof of the name change itself.13Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles. Proof of Identity and Residency If you live elsewhere, handle this at your home state’s DMV with the same core documents plus proof of your home address.

Passport

With a current U.S. passport, you can update it by mail using Form DS-82 and a certified copy of your marriage certificate.14U.S. Department of State. Renew Your Passport by Mail If your passport was issued less than a year ago and the name change happened within that window, use Form DS-5504 for a free correction instead.15U.S. Department of State. U.S. Passport Renewal Application for Eligible Individuals Expired passports or those that don’t meet the renewal criteria require applying in person on Form DS-11. Don’t put this off if you have international travel coming up; renewals routinely run six to eight weeks and longer during peak season.

Everything Else

Once your government IDs are updated, work through banks, credit cards, your employer’s payroll system, utilities, voter registration, and any professional licenses. Most need only a copy of your marriage certificate and your updated ID. A single afternoon with your documents in front of you can clear most of the list.

Update Beneficiaries and Estate Documents

Beneficiary designations on life insurance, 401(k)s, IRAs, brokerage accounts, and payable-on-death bank accounts override your will. If your 401(k) still names an ex or a parent from when you opened it years ago, that’s who inherits the money regardless of what your will says. Marriage does not automatically update these designations. You have to do it yourself, account by account.

If you already have a will, review it. Marriage doesn’t automatically revoke a will in most states, but it can trigger rules that give your new spouse a share of your estate even if the will doesn’t mention them. If you don’t have a will, this is a strong reason to make one — without it, state intestacy laws decide who inherits, and the defaults may not match what you’d want. Durable powers of attorney and health care directives are worth setting up at the same time so your spouse can make financial and medical decisions for you if you’re incapacitated.

On joint accounts and credit: marriage itself doesn’t merge your credit reports, but any joint account you open will appear on both, and both spouses become equally responsible for the debt. Whether to combine finances fully, keep them separate, or run a hybrid setup is a personal decision with no single right answer.

If You Both Live in Nevada

Nevada is a community property state. Most income earned and property acquired by either spouse during the marriage belongs equally to both of you, and debts taken on during the marriage are generally shared.16Nevada Legislature. Nevada Revised Statutes Chapter 123 – Rights of Married Couples Property either spouse owned before the wedding, plus gifts and inheritances received during the marriage, stay separate. Couples can change these defaults with a written agreement, including a postnuptial agreement if you didn’t sign a prenup before the ceremony. If you married in Vegas but live in another state, your home state’s marital property rules apply, not Nevada’s.
