If your California driver’s license has not arrived in the mail, start by checking your status online through MyDMV, confirming the address the DMV has on file, and watching the 60-day expiration on your temporary paper license. Most delays trace back to an address mismatch, a USPS forwarding limitation, or a processing hold that needs to be cleared before the card can be printed and sent.
How Long It Should Take
Timelines depend on how you applied. Online renewals and kiosk transactions take about two weeks for the card to arrive by mail. Applications submitted by mail take closer to four weeks.1California Department of Motor Vehicles. Processing Times – California DMV In-office applications generally fall in the same two-to-four-week range.
If you renewed online and three weeks have passed, that’s worth looking into. If you applied by mail, four to five weeks may still be within normal range.2California DMV. Driver’s License and ID Card Online Renewal – Check My DL/ID Status
Your Temporary License Expires in 60 Days
When you apply or renew, you receive a paper temporary license valid for 60 days. It is your legal authorization to drive while you wait for the card.3California DMV. Driver’s License or ID Card Online Renewal – California DMV
That clock matters. The DMV itself uses 60 days as the point at which you should check your status online and take further action if the card has not shown up.4California DMV. Driver’s License and ID Online Renewal Keep the paper document on you while driving until the card arrives.
Check Your Status Online
The DMV runs a tool specifically for tracking where your license is in production and mailing. It lives on the “Driver’s License & ID Card Status” page, and you’ll need your driver’s license or ID card number plus a MyDMV account to log in.5California Department of Motor Vehicles. Driver’s License and ID Card Status Your license number is printed on the temporary paper document you received when you applied.
The tool will tell you whether the card is still being processed, has been printed and mailed, or is stuck on an issue needing your attention. You can also call the DMV at 1-800-777-0133 for automated assistance, but the online status page is faster and gives you real-time information without hold times.
Why It Probably Hasn’t Arrived
Most delays fall into three buckets.
Address Problems
This is where the majority of missing-license cases start. A typo in your street number, an outdated apartment unit, or an old address you never updated with the DMV will send your card to the wrong mailbox. Pull out your temporary license and compare the address printed on it to where you actually live. California law requires you to notify the DMV of any address change within 10 days.6California DMV. USPS Won’t Forward It
A change-of-address form at the post office does not solve this. USPS states that mail from government agencies carrying certain endorsements may not be forwarded, and driver’s licenses are specifically listed as an example.7United States Postal Service. Change of Address – The Basics If you moved and only told USPS, the card was likely returned to the DMV as undeliverable. You have to update your address directly with the DMV.
A Processing Hold
Sometimes the status tool shows that your card never entered the mailing phase. A failed photo scan, a signature issue, or an unresolved hold on your driving record can freeze production. These problems don’t resolve on their own. If the status tool flags one, plan on a field office visit or a call to clear it.
Update Your Address With the DMV
If your address is wrong, fix it through the DMV’s online Change of Address system from your MyDMV account. Allow up to three days for the update to process.8California DMV. Submit a Change of Address Online – California DMV
A few situations make you ineligible for the online system: a commercial driver’s license with an out-of-state residence address, an APO or FPO address, or a REAL ID application you’ve submitted but not yet received. In those cases, complete the Change of Address (DMV 14) form and mail it to the address on the form.8California DMV. Request a Replacement
If 60 days have passed and the card still hasn’t arrived, request a replacement. You can do it online through your MyDMV account in most cases, without visiting a field office.9California Department of Motor Vehicles. Replacement Driver’s License Request
The replacement fee is $37 for a standard Class C license and $44 for a commercial Class A, B, or C license.10California DMV. Licensing Fees – California DMV
Some situations require an in-person visit. If the status tool flags a problem with your photo, signature, or identity verification, those can only be resolved at a field office, where you’ll complete a new application and verify your identity again. Book an appointment through the DMV website to avoid the walk-in wait.
If You’re Flying Before the Card Arrives
Your temporary paper license is not accepted as identification at TSA airport security checkpoints.11Transportation Security Administration. Acceptable Identification at the TSA Checkpoint REAL ID has been enforced at airports since May 7, 2025, so if your permanent card is stuck in the mail, you’ll need another form of ID to fly. A valid U.S. passport or passport card works, as do Global Entry and other DHS trusted traveler cards, military IDs, and permanent resident cards.12Transportation Security Administration. If travel is coming up and you have no acceptable backup, start the status check and replacement process now rather than at the airport.
