What to Do When Unemployment Benefits Are Exhausted in Colorado

When your unemployment benefits run out in Colorado, your first move is to check whether state Extended Benefits have been triggered; if they haven’t, shift immediately to the safety-net programs that replace different pieces of what your paycheck used to cover — health insurance, food, cash, rent, heat, and student loan payments. Most of these run through a single state portal, Colorado PEAK, and several have deadlines or seasonal windows that punish waiting.

First, Check for Extended Benefits

Extended Benefits is a federal-state program that adds up to 13 more weeks of unemployment payments (up to 20 in states with especially severe unemployment) when a state’s unemployment rate crosses a statutory trigger.1U.S. Department of Labor. Unemployment Insurance Extended Benefits Colorado only turns the program on when its insured unemployment rate exceeds specific thresholds, and shuts it off again when conditions improve. In a healthy labor market, it simply isn’t available.

There’s no separate application. Log into your MyUI+ account and look at your claim status: if Extended Benefits are active and you qualify, the system flags it automatically.2Department of Labor & Employment – Colorado. Unemployment If nothing appears, assume the program isn’t on and move to the programs below.

Replace Your Health Insurance Within 60 Days

This is the most time-sensitive piece. Losing job-based coverage triggers a Special Enrollment Period that gives you 60 days to pick a plan through Connect for Health Colorado, the state’s marketplace.3colorado.gov. Connect for Health Colorado Miss that window and you’re generally locked out until annual open enrollment. When you apply, enter your projected annual income — not what you used to earn — so the system calculates advance premium tax credits. For someone with little or no income after exhausting unemployment, those credits can cut premiums dramatically, sometimes to zero.

If your income has dropped far enough, you may qualify for Health First Colorado, the state’s Medicaid program, instead. A single adult qualifies with monthly income up to $1,735.4Health First Colorado. Do You Qualify? Medicaid has no limited enrollment window — you can apply any time your income qualifies — and you do it through Colorado PEAK alongside your other benefit applications.

Apply for SNAP for Groceries

Food assistance is typically the fastest help to arrive after unemployment income stops. SNAP benefits load onto an EBT card that works like a debit card at grocery stores. Colorado takes applications through the PEAK portal, and approval can happen within 30 days of a complete submission, sometimes faster if your situation qualifies as expedited.

One rule catches newly unemployed applicants off guard. Able-bodied adults without dependents between 18 and 64 must work or participate in a qualifying work activity for at least 20 hours per week (averaged to 80 hours per month) to keep receiving SNAP beyond three months within any 36-month window.5Colorado Department of Human Services. Able-Bodied Adults Without Dependents Volunteering, job training, and certain workforce programs count. If you’re actively engaged with a workforce center or enrolled in retraining, you likely already meet it — but confirm with your caseworker so benefits don’t lapse.

Colorado Works Cash Assistance (If You Have Kids)

Colorado Works is the state’s version of Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, and it provides monthly cash payments plus support services. Eligibility is narrower than SNAP: you generally must be pregnant or caring for a child under 18, live in Colorado, have lawful immigration status, and have a family income below $75,000 per year.6Colorado Department of Human Services. Colorado Works Single adults without children typically don’t qualify, which the program name doesn’t make obvious.

If you qualify, gather Social Security numbers for every household member, proof of Colorado residency (a lease or utility bill works), income statements for the last 30 days, and records of monthly expenses like rent and heat. Documenting childcare costs and medical expenses for household members over 60 can increase the amount of help you receive.

How Colorado PEAK Ties It Together

Nearly every public assistance program in Colorado runs through one portal. A single PEAK account lets you apply for SNAP, Colorado Works, Medicaid, energy assistance, childcare help, and transit discounts in one place.7Colorado PEAK. Log In or Apply for Benefits Create the account, enter financial information, and upload your verification documents. A county caseworker reviews the application and usually schedules an interview to confirm household details.

Delays almost always come from missing paperwork. Before you start, gather ID, Social Security cards, lease or mortgage statement, utility bills, pay stubs or a screenshot of your final unemployment payment, and bank statements. Apply for multiple programs at once and you upload the documents only once. After SNAP approval, your EBT card usually arrives in seven to ten business days.

Rent and Mortgage Help

Falling behind on housing payments is often the most immediate fear when unemployment income stops. Colorado has layers of help, though none are instant and most have limited funding.

The Colorado Department of Local Affairs runs an Emergency Rental Assistance Program for residents who have fallen behind on rent, meet income limits, and face eviction or displacement.8Colorado Department of Local Affairs. Emergency Rental Assistance Program It prioritizes people facing active eviction. Application windows open periodically through a random selection process, so check the DOLA site for current availability.

At the federal level, HUD’s Housing Choice Voucher program (Section 8) helps low-income families afford private-market rentals, but waitlists in most Colorado counties are long.9U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Helping Americans Contact your local public housing agency to get on the list even if the wait is months out, because you won’t move up unless you’re on it. HUD also funds free housing counseling through approved agencies that can help you negotiate with landlords or explore mortgage forbearance.

Heating Bills Through LEAP

Colorado’s Low-Income Energy Assistance Program helps pay winter heating bills for households earning less than 60 percent of the state median income.10Colorado Department of Human Services. Colorado Low-Income Energy Assistance Program (LEAP) It runs seasonally, generally November through April, so the timing of your unemployment matters. Submit proof of household income for the prior month, a copy of your most recent heating bill, and Social Security numbers and birth dates for everyone in the household. If heat is included in your rent, submit your rent receipt instead.

Applications go through your county LEAP office — some accept email, others require mail — or you can start through PEAK. The benefit is a one-time payment sent directly to your utility, not cash in hand, but it keeps the heat on during the months when your budget has the least margin.

Pause Federal Student Loans

If you’re carrying federal student loans, losing your income doesn’t mean you have to keep paying in full. The unemployment deferment lets you pause payments for up to six months at a time on Direct Loans and FFEL Program loans, with a cumulative maximum of 36 months across the life of the loans.11Federal Student Aid. Unemployment Deferment Request Perkins Loan borrowers get up to 12 months per deferment period plus a six-month grace period afterward.

To qualify, you need to either be receiving unemployment benefits or show you’re actively seeking full-time work (30 or more hours per week). If you’re not receiving benefits, you generally must register with an employment agency within 50 miles of home; online job boards and temp agencies don’t count for this.11Federal Student Aid. Unemployment Deferment Request

An income-driven repayment plan is worth considering if your unemployment stretches past six months. Under current plans, borrowers with very low income can qualify for payments as low as zero per month. Starting July 1, 2026, new federal loans will fall under a new Repayment Assistance Plan, and loans issued after July 1, 2027, will no longer be eligible for unemployment deferments at all. Existing loans still fall under current rules, but don’t wait to request a deferment, because interest can accrue while you delay.

Workforce Centers and Paid Retraining

Colorado’s workforce centers don’t disappear from your life because your weekly checks did. The Colorado Department of Labor and Employment runs centers across the state that offer career services whether or not you’re currently collecting unemployment.2Department of Labor & Employment – Colorado. Unemployment Their real value kicks in once benefits end, because that’s when most people face sharper decisions about retraining versus continuing a search in the same field.

The Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act funds training accounts that can cover tuition for professional certifications, vocational programs, and retraining courses, but only for programs on the state’s eligible training provider list.12Apprenticeship.gov. Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act WIOA specifically targets dislocated workers — people who lost jobs due to layoffs, plant closures, or broad economic shifts — with local workforce development boards determining eligibility.13eCFR. Part 680 Subpart A – Delivery of Adult and Dislocated Worker Activities Under Title I of the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act If you were laid off rather than fired for cause, you likely qualify. Visit your nearest workforce center; they handle intake and can tell you what training programs have available funding in your area.

Call 211 When You’re Not Sure Where to Start

When the list is overwhelming and you don’t know which door to open first, dial 2-1-1 from any phone in Colorado. The 211 Colorado service connects callers with local resources for food, housing, financial assistance, and other basic needs, and you can also text your ZIP code to 898-211. A navigator can help you figure out which programs fit your situation and point you to community organizations — food banks, utility assistance funds, emergency cash grants — that don’t always show up in state databases. This is especially useful if your county’s PEAK caseworker has a backlog and you need help before your application clears.

Don’t Forget the Tax Bill on What You Already Received

Unemployment benefits are taxable federal income, and this trips people up every spring. Colorado reports every dollar it paid you on Form 1099-G, which also goes to the IRS.14Internal Revenue Service. Unemployment Compensation If you didn’t have taxes withheld during the months you collected, you could owe a lump sum at filing time. The only voluntary withholding rate the IRS allows on unemployment compensation is a flat 10 percent of each payment, requested by submitting Form W-4V to the paying agency.15Internal Revenue Service. Form W-4V Voluntary Withholding Request

If benefits have already ended and nothing was withheld, consider making a quarterly estimated tax payment to avoid an underpayment penalty at filing time; the IRS walks through the calculation in Publication 505. Your 1099-G for the year is available through MyUI+ once issued.2Department of Labor & Employment – Colorado. Unemployment
